Who's being an ass? You say he hits for power when the Sox need it the most and then cite an example from three years ago.

Not a really strong argument.

He knocked one off the wall in St. Louis with the bases jammed in the 2004 WS. That is only a year and a half ago.

I don't think a final decision on Trot can be made until the end of the year. You don't make a decision whether or not to re-sign a guy based on 1 or 2 months.

Trot plays a position where power is at a premium. He has 6 homeruns this year. That's one less than our "offensively inept" shortstop.

Look, it's clear I'm not the biggest Trot Nixon fan. He just simply isn't getting the job done anymore as a starting RF. If he's willing to become a platoon player, hopefully with Pena, then resigning him wouldn't be a bad idea. But anyone who thinks Trot is the starting RF next year is kidding themselves.

He hasn't had a XBH in close to a month. If it was anyone else in the starting lineup people would be screaming to bench him. But Trot gets a free pass because he's a "gamer" and he "plays hard." He isn't producing. Period.

As a platoon player, he would get the majority of the ABs.

Fine, let me reword myself.

He'd be a bench player, basically taking Pena's role from him. They'd switch roles.

Why so Huffy today? IMO unless Trot continues his slump through the end of the year or unless the Red Sox have bad medical data about his back, they should consider re-signing him. In addition to what he does on the field, his leadership in the Clubhouse is underrated. Everyone loves Ortiz in the Clubhouse and everyone respects Trot. He brings a certain professional atmosphere to the clubhouse that is needed for a team to be a winner.

This I can agree with, I'd just like to see them use more of Pena when Nixon is struggling. Get Trot some sessions with Papa Jack.

I'd wait until the end of the season with Trot. When I defended his worth earlier in this thread, I didn't mean to give anyone the idea that I was totally in favor of keeping him. He's got some serious red flags. Injury history, age, and declining power. Although, I don't know that his power is declining that much, he's just in a god-awful slump right now. He's not squaring it up. If that becomes the norm, then yeah, it's time to cut bait. I will say this, it's nice to have a replacement option on the roster. The COF market looks a little thin after C.Lee this offseason.

I have no idea why the Sox would not offer this guy a nice contract. Though he is kinda old, he plays the hardest of anyone on the team every day and gets on base at a pretty high clip. WMP is much worse defensively and can really only contribute through the longball. Nixon works pitchers and still hits for power when we need it most ('03 ALCS anyone?)

"He plays the hardest of anyone on the team every day"

I think you said it yourself. He DOESN'T and CAN'T play every day. All the reason that he doesn't deserve to be paid /treated like a top notch or even mid-level starting RFer.

I think that the Sox probably believe that Crisp can move to RF too (his speed would be valuable in that enormous RF) which would give them flexibility with regard to getting either a CF or RF as needed. With Nixon there, that's not possible.

His arm isn't good enough. WMP needs to improve the D.

His arm isn't good enough to be a good CF either, yet he is still doing fine with it.

A good arm is more important in RF than CF. Coco is a horrible option at RF, IMO.

He did in Cleveland and that worked out fine. You don't need the strongest arm in the world as you guys care to thing. If Damon can any OF position with his arm then Coco can play right field.

He played left in Cleveland.

After Coco’s adventures in the outfield this weekend I find the timing odd to make an argument that he can adequately play RF.

Him and Casey Blake played the corner outfield spots. They switched off one and awhile. Coco was the CF till Sizemore took over. He played both corner outfield spots. Don't tell me when I watched him with my own two eyes.

Nobody is saying he can't play RF, but I am certainly saying he shouldn't play RF. Say it's not important all you want, but that won't change the fact that a big arm is part of the skill-set you want in a RF.

Hey my friends, all of this stuff would be moot if Trot, Coco, Tek, and the rest of the gang would just get more consistent and help the offense take the load off of Papi and Manny. The fact is we all know this thing is going down to the wire and not matter how positive we want to be this is going to be a close race all the way. As for Trot, none of us would moan about his power numbers if suddenly he starts belting out some doubles and driving in a bunch of runs. That said, I think tonight we ought to give Pena a shot at Zito. As much as love Gabe Kapler, face it, he hasn't hit a lick in his last 25 or so at bats. What do you guys think?

Pena should have been in there whenever there was a lefty on the mound since he came off of the DL. I'm not going to sit here and watch Kapler play over Wily Mo while Arroyo puts on performances like the other night against the Mets. Play Pena, you didn't trade away Arroyo to have Wily Mo watch Kapler play.

Manny, it can't happen soon enough for me. I think all this stuff about Nixon failing and should be traded would stop immediately if he would start banging out some doubles, singles and driving in a bunch of runs. It would also help if Coco and Manny could get their s*** together in the outfield. Needless to say the Red Sox are my first love by far, but I have been rooting for the Dodgers in the NL for the first time since they left Brooklyn and they are really playing crappy right now, so you can bet yesterday was a real bummer all around. I expect both teams to win tonight.

Its not like Kapler has completely been tearing up. He is 0 for his last 12, and 2-16 since the Break. Hoping tonights lineup features Wily Mo. Who knows with Tito and how he can sometimes use that loyalty to past players card, albeit with Kapler being 7 for 25 against Zito. If Theo & the Sox believe Wily Mo is the next right fielder then give him the playing time he was promised

Trot has apparently become injury free and taken a huge loss in power..

Roid Boy indeed.

Not to necessarily disagree here, but it’s sad in today’s MLB we look at players under those circumstances. Since we don’t know for sure it’s obviously speculation, like in Trot’s case.

Its a sad fact.. I dont relish the thoughts.. but a player at that age dropping power is highly unusual..

The fact that hes gone injury free for the first time in years alos begs the question..

Although I worry about Wily Mo Pena in the outfield and his seemingly inability to play right field, something Gabe Kapler does very well, my idea would be to DH Manny tonight to rest his knees, put Big Papi on first, Youk in right and Wily Mo in left. Either that or play Pena in center and give Crisp a chance to get his crap together. Pena might give us some fire power we need in the next few series' coming up.
