Johnson to PawSox?

There's growing indication that Jason Johnson will accept a minor-league assignment to Pawtucket when the second half of the season starts.

Johnson is 0-2 with a 10.13 E.R.A. in two starts with the Red Sox since having been acquired from the Cleveland Guardians last month.

As a major-league veteran with more than three years' service time, Johnson has the right to refuse such an assignment. But the Sox apparently have convinced him that the time spent in the minor leagues could be beneficial to retooling his mechanics.

Kyle Snyder, who made one start last month after having been claimed on waivers from the Kansas City Royals, has been pitching for Pawtucket (1-1, 3.54 E.R.A. in three starts) and would be a candidate to replace Johnson.

I’m surprised the Sox would be willing to put forth the effort to salvage Johnson. And I don’t expect much especially since scrap heap pickups under Theo’s coaching staff have a poor record of recovery.

I really wanted Jeff Weaver but that's obviously not happening. We need to jsut keep chucking out crap untill something appears on the waiver wire.

Never mind the 5th spot, this rotation, has some big problems. The 5th slot is currently the forfeit slot. The #4 has been good and demonstrated a lot of promise and potential, but can't go more than 5. Wakefield's back woes continue, and Beckett has been getting taken deep at a dizzying pace. Right now, it seems that the only certainty is that Schilling and Beckett will take the ball every fifth day. If Wakefield goes down, the sickly rotation will cause the pen to crumble and the team will take a nose-dive.

The SOx announced today that they'll call up Snyder for the 5th spot on Monday against his former team, the royals

What was it about Weavers 6.29 ERA that makes you want him to be a part of the rotation? He is a whole like 1 ER better than Lenny Dinardo for about 8 million more dollars. If you're interesting in making runs at pitchers with an ERA in the 6's then we might as well just sign people off the street ... at least we'd save some money.

nesn said that wells might be the 5th starter because wells is feeling better.:dunno:
But can that question be answered by the trading deadline? I don't think it can.

If Wakefield cannot make his start saturday it is likely the Red Sox will purchase the contract of Kason Gabbard from AAA Pawtucket to make the start against the mariners.

There were smiles and fist bumps all around after David Wells completed a 42-pitch, three-inning simulated game today. The plan is for Wells to pitch a side session Friday, another simulated game on Monday, and after that, who knows?

Most likely one rehab assignment, but there is increasing confidence around here that he might give the Sox 10 starts down the stretch. Which, of course, would be a huge boon to the ballclub.

im not nor was i ever a wells guy

however

seeing him battle last year as well as trying to come back this year despite his many many demands to be traded has given me a new respect for him

he dont need the money

getting 70 innings of anything remotely decent (-5 era) would be huge for us and our pen

Lefthander Kason Gabbard, a 29th-round draft pick in 2000 who was 9-2 with Double-A Portland, is expected to be called up to replace Wakefield and start Saturday vs. Seattle.

Why would we bring up Gabbard when we could bring up Alvarez....uuhhrr.....yay Kason!!

Its not like Alvarez has been lighting it up in Pawtucket. He has been struggling mightily since he was last sent down, losing his last 6 decisions.

Gabbard's last 2 starts he has rebounded nicely (10.2 innings, 2 runs) after being tossed around in his first 3 starts. In Portland he was down right dominant. Like Alvarez, he's a lefty pitcher. However unlike Alvarez, he is known to be a groundball pitcher and use that gold glove defense behind him. It is too early to call him up but he is the best internal option the Sox have.

Gabbard

4.97 ERA (2.57 ERA in Portland in 13 starts)

81 Ks

35 Walks

9 HRs

81 Hits in 102.2 innings

Alvarez

5.56 ERA

47 Ks

30 Walks

16 HRs

104 Hits in 90.2 innings

My first thought was why not give Pauley another chance. But it makes sense that the Sox don’t want to interrupt his time in AAA and give him some stability for his development.

This has been a special season for Sox fans as we get to see how the young pitching prospects will hold up in the majors. I’ve never seen Gabbard pitch so I’m kind of looking forward to the opportunity.

This is terrible news about Wakefield. It looks like the Sox wil be forfeiting 2 out of every 5 games for a while. That will put tremendous pressure on the other starters not to mention the bull pen. This could culminate in a prolonged bad streak where they lose something like 7 out of 10. This might not happen right away, but they will not be able keep their heads above water for very long with no one in the 4th and 5th slots. Maybe the Sox should just forfeit one game every 5 days to give the rest of the team a rest. ;) Playing those games will take a huge toll on the team.

Gabbard isn't a pitching prospect. He could potentially be a mop-up man at the highest level. Hopefully, he could get lucky and turn in a few quality starts, but I wouldn't bank on it. Even if he does, he isn't going to be in the big picture for the Red Sox. He's a left-hander with a fastball that can't hit 90, and his secondary stuff isn't anything to brag about.

Last night’s start with Snyder showed a lot of promise with all of the groundouts. In his 3 starts with the Sox he’s gone 14.2 IP, 14K, 3B. He sails through 4 innings and for some reason the 5th inning he sufferers from some kind of meltdown. Whether it’s part mental, bad luck, opposing lineups just getting used to him, or a combination of all of this…I don’t know. If he can learn to work through this issue I can’t see why he couldn’t be used as a spot starter or long reliever.

Snyder could probably fill one of the vacant spots until Wakefield and Wells come back. The other spot is a real problem. Hopefully, a productive Wells can reclaim his spot in two weeks.

its going to be a tough stretch for the rotation, hopefully the guys who are fill-ins like snyder can do enough until we get the regular guys back up like wake and wells.

As I was assuming, Theo held off on officially calling up Kason Gabbard because he was in what was "intense" talks on acquiring a starting pitcher. With Wakefield out for 3 weeks at best, and the uncertainty of what type of David Wells comes back.. something has to be done on that front

Kyle Snyder has earned himself couple more starts. His first 3 stars in a Red Sox uni, has seen him go 2-1 with a 4.91 ERA. He'll get the A's next time out at McAfee Coliseum

dont get me wrong i love Pena, he just seems the most likely candidate.
