Thats strange I never heard the Giants requesting Ramirez, Papelbon, and Moss for Schmidt. Basically thats just another way of a GM saying we aren't trading this guy right now. Trying to get maximum value is one thing....trying to rip off another team is different. I really think being a GM with a reputation of trying to make ludicrous deals really limits the moves you can make. A team may inquire about a certain player but if you always request the world for them....you probably won't get much done.

I guess it wouldn't "shock" me if the Giants asked for that.....but I would expect them to work with the Red Sox if they were serious about making a trade....otherwise you just hang up the phone.

Why not ask for the world? If the team's desperate enough to do the deal, pull the trigger. If not, ask around the league see what the market is offering, then make the best deal. The Giants, aren't really desperate to move Schmidt right now, why not start with Lester and Hansen? The Red Sox will politely say no, and try to work out a different package out. It's called negotiating, all teams do this.

Ok good we are on the same page now. I suppose you can ask (no harm in that). My point was the price for Jason Schmidt will not be Jon Lester and Craig Hansen. I don't think a team in baseball would be desperate enough to make a move like that. Sure you can start there but the negotiating to an appropriate deal is important. The Florida Marlins can do it....the Tampa Bay Devil Rays cannot. The Marlins have done this before where they work with teams to get a good deal in place while the Devil Rays continue to push teams over the edge. This is a big reason the Marlins are able to get competitve over the course of several seasons and the reason the Devil Rays continue to suck.

I would expect the Giants to be more realistic based on the teams age, concern with Schmidt's age and health, and the fact he is a free agent this offseason.

I agree. I expect the trade to be whittled down to probably two good prospects, and one fringe one.

Though in fairness to the Devil Rays, they never had an owner like Wayne Huizanga, and the Marlins got the better Josh in that fabeled draft.

On the NESN pregame Clement’s rehab outing in the GCL was discussed. He was hit in the foot by a comebacker to the mound. He finished out the 1st inning but was pulled after throwing only two pitches in the 2nd. Apparently he’s still experiencing cramping in his shoulder and arm. Yet another setback…seriously what is his future?

His contract runs out at the end of next year, right?

This guy isn't going to be a 12-14 game winner anymore, but maybe we can get something out of him, like long relief/spot starts, or maybe a 5th starter role if things don't work out with Johnson/Snyder.

His contract runs out after 2007....The Sox will eat most of his money for 2007 and trade him out of boston.

Clement isnt good enough to be our 5th starter, let alone put that hack into the bullpen.

If he can't get back and pitch productively, the FO has to get an experienced starter.

Yes, I heard about that. This guy just can't get his s*** together. Here's the story from Yahoo!:

the guy's been f***ed up ever since he took that pitch to the head. just hasn't been the same.

He seriously is a ball magnet, poor guy. He got hit in the foot in his rehab start. But I guess that his right bicep was sore only after throwing 1 inning (about 17 pitches). A comeback anytime soon is not looking good.
