Scattered reports from eei & Espn radio are saying that Clement's arm cramping issues had forced the Red Sox to reshuffle the rotation with Pauley taking Clements spot in the doubleheader for today. He hasnt pitched since last Sunday against Detroit, a game in which he left while facing a batter on a 2-1 count. All reports were that it was a non baseball related injury, but speculation grows that Clement could be placed on the 15 day disabled list. Added onto that, Schilling & Wakefield are both expected to start the first 2 games of the Twins series.

Even before this, I think it was being made known that Lester isnt just making a spot start. It could be up for good with Wells on the DL till who knows when. If this is so, rather I think this gives Pauley some more opportunities to make a name for himself and be a decent #5 starter.

So our rotation Right now is

Schilling

Beckett

Wake

Lester

Pauley

I actually kind of like it, however it could be taxing on a bullpen because sometimes rookies can get shelled easily, but So wasnt Matt Clement

They better get another established ML stsarter. They can't expect both kids to hold down spots.

I saw this on MLB.com and also think there’s maybe more to the story:

Red Sox right-hander Matt Clement had his Sunday start scratched as a precaution because he has been feeling some spasms in his right arm. The Red Sox think that the spasms are related to how much extra work Clement did leading in to his last start when he altered his mechanics significantly and wound up having a win to show for it.

This could be a phantom injury but regardless, if he’s that bad off then disable him. All of these injuries with the pitching staff as of late does make me wonder how effective Nipper is as well.

They can live with the kids for now.....give them a chance before going out and getting another starter and if they do get another starter don't expect a big name either.

Clement tried to instigate that the unfair schedule balancing in May had messed with his routine. Yea Clement it worked so good for you in April with every 5th day, no wait you had a 6.14 ERA in April.

cmon guys, be more supportive of Clement. he does have good stuff and if he pitches the way he has the ability to, he is an amazing guy to have as the 5th starter.

Clement had a decent start last time out, and as bad as he has been Lester and Pauley at 4 and 5 is not going to end up well for the Sox in the end. We need him back.

The key word is... if

He hasnt had consistent great stuff since before the all-star break, and dont bring up Tampa Bay becauyse he had 3 bad starts before that outing

How do you expect to get rookies experience other than letting them play?

and which red sox pitcher besides papelbon has been consistent all season? the answer would be none

sorry nope. The ace of the staff Curt Schilling has been consistently good the season. Leads AL in wins and top 5 in Ks. Projections have him set for around 20 wins and an ERA of 3.50-3.75 with 200 Ks.

9-2, 3.81 ERA-- 77 Ks, 9 Walks

Heck Wakefield has a 4-7 record, but thats just because of inept run support. He's 2nd in Sox starting ERA

Anyways, Im sorry i just cant see how Matt Clement has been a dependable pitcher this year

-------------------------------

EDIT: One other thing is that I said Clement hasnt been consistently good since before the all-star break of last year. 2006 he ranks as one of the worst AL starting pitchers

I agree, I love what Curt has done this year but the home runs have been a problem.

and Wakefield is Wakefield. He's consistently average and will always have an ERA in the low to mid 4s.

All I'm doing is recognizing the importance of having an effective Clement as the 5th starter because this team is good enough to make a serious run at the World Series, but not if we have to rely on guys who should still be in the farm system as the 5th starter.

I guess I was just encouraged by the report that he has been revamping his mechanics and had a solid start in his first outing after that revamping. It isn't that long ago that he wore that Red Sox jersey on the AL all-star team.

Not by giving two rotation spots to them. Let them dip their toes in the water here and there like MDC has done over the past couple of years. Get some confidence in them out of the pen and then let them compete for a job in ST in a couple of years.

lol. I think we can live with Lester and Pauley for a couple weeks.
Did watch game 2? We can't afford to keep Pauley on the ML roster. Hopefully the Lester experiment will end soon. I'd prefer that he gets lit up in his next start. I'd prefer that to three or four more games where he pitches just well enough to lose. Win are needed. This Red Sox team cannot afford to be a training ground for kids.

Then you tell me who's going to pitch. Go on.

edit - And I'm sure the Marlins will want Lester if he gets rocked in his next start.

If and when Boomer comes back, and until Clement can pull his head out of his ass and decide to pitch again, then we’re going to have to rely on Pauley and Lester.

The same Pauley that held the Yankees to 2 runs in Yankee Stadium.

Good to know.

yeah thats right the same guy who also has these stats in 16 IP 31H 14ER 6BB 10K and worst of all a WHIP of 2.31 and opponants batting .419 nice numbers eh?

One factor that seems to never gets touched upon with all of the discussion of the pitchers is the coaching staff, and in particular Nipper. IMO the types of injuries, other than Boomer’s, all seem like a possible byproduct of poor conditioning. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I miss Joe Kerrigan.

BTW, when is Wallace due to come back?

You're a moron, I'm sorry. This really isn't as personal as it sounds but cause in other sections of the boards at times I've noticed your pretty tolerable - even likable :o. I have to say though, you're overall outlook on baseball and how the Sox should be run makes me want to jump off of a bridge to think that we are fans of the same team! The whole point of having a farm system is to filter these guys in and let them contribute at low cost and build a strong team around them. Lester is not an experiment! He is the future of our rotation very likely and he will be in the rotation until Wells comes back and all of next year. I'm really shocked that you hate everyone under the age of 30 who hasn't already won a Cy Young. If we let kids get their toes wet like you say they would be 29 when they get their first full season in! ala youkilis. MDC is not getting moved up and down because they want that, he is only doing that because there hasn't been wide open roster space for him.

Gah! *chokegargle...die*
