I can't believe LaPorta slipped to the 14th round. He must have some signability issues. I hope he does get inked and into the system quickly. The f***er can hit.

~.280 IsoP this year

~.150 IsoD

He alone can make the deficiency of corner power dissappear. I won't get my hopes up until we hear something about whether or not they have a realistic chance of signing him.

Rotoworld--

High school outfielder Jason Place was Boston's first pick on Tuesday, going 27th overall.

The Red Sox will hope Place can develop into a 30-homer guy. He has the skills to turn into a quality defender in right field. Whether he'll have the on-base skills to emerge as a regular is the biggest question. Jun. 6 - 6:49 pm et

Red Sox selected Florida first baseman Matt LaPorta in the 14th round of Tuesday's draft.

LaPorta was projected as a sure first-round pick entering the year, but he suffered a strained oblique and he lost command of the strike zone when he was healthy. Since he fell as far as he did, there's a good chance he'll return to Florida for his senior season. However, he has the potential to be a steal if the Red Sox can sign him. A first baseman with middle-of-the-order potential is a definite need within the organization. Jun. 6 - 9:24 pm et

please sign him

Gammons reporting on bbt that the sox had a deal with andrew miller for the 27th pick and he attempted to get to #27 by asking for a ridiculous amount from anyone else

you guys are way to optimistic.. half of those guys won't become mainstay's on mlb rosters and even less will put up good numbers. but hey, root on.

That is pretty much the case. Anything past the 2nd round has there work cut out for them. There could be a couple guys who show up and show something like this Laporta guy but....not likely.

I do have a lot of faith in Theo and his scouts though. Since taking over the team our drafting has been excellent. It won't be too long before we start seeing some of these guys come through...trades or on the major league roster.

The Sox probably had one of the better drafts out there. There top 5 picks were solid. Then the sox basically went the college route for the next 4 picks or so as they were guys that were likely easy sign guys. The sox then took 4 HS players that could be considered tougher signs. Along with getting some more college guys to potentially fill out rosters they put icing on the cake when they selected Matt LaPorta in the 14th round and Lars Anderson in the 18th round both of whom slipped big time because of bonus demands. Of course not everyone will sign or pan out but the FO did a solid job targeting players and drafting them.

The guys that are drafted in the real high rounds what happens to most of them? Theres no way they can all make it somewhere in the minors.

They either get signed or go to college....If they are signed the HS kids go to the GCL and the college picks go to Lowell or Greenville.

Sox draft RHP Josh Papelbon in the 48th round out of North Florida.

Great news Jsinger, something Ive been hoping for

Any news if Josh's twin Jeremy, also a pitcher, was taken in the draft or is waiting another year instead?

Jeremy was taken in the 19th round by the Cubs

I would expect that both could go back to school to improve their draft stock for next season.

it would be cool if they did and the Sox drafted both of them next year.

What year are they in college? Junior?

Both are Juniors at the University of North Florida.....Jeremy is a LHP and Josh is a side winding RHP.

LaPorta and Lars Anderson are supposed to be hard to sign because they dropped so far.

There's a guy named Lars Anderson in the draft? Does anyone else besides us know that field?

This was a great pick for the sox at this part of the draft. He was rated the 41st best player in the graft by Baseball America. Some thought he would be a first rounder and most of the others thought he would be a definite 2nd round pick. He is powerful, patient and has awesome bat speed. This along with a great frame at 6-5 205 makes him a prototypical 1st basemen.

"LaPorta and Lars Anderson are supposed to be hard to sign"

Anderson wants 1 mil, He is the obvious first choice if they had to decide between him and Laporta.

"I would expect that both could go back to school to improve their draft stock for next season."

Actually Josh is expected to sign with the Sox.
