He lost one year to injury while with the Red Sox--- 2001. He's missed a lot of time this year' date=' but he's got some time to get ready for the playoffs and that's what the Mets have been preparing him for. If he's ready, he' ll put up the zero's in the playoffs.[/quote']

And if he's not he'll be injured again before then and will STILL have 2 years left on his enormous contract.

He was an All Star last year. If they win the WS this year and he helps bring the trophy, I don't think the Mets will be beating themselves over the head about the first two years. That leave the last two years and conjecture about whether he will still do the job. His arm should be fresh for next year, because he was coddled this year and he had no arm problems.

the man has lost his velocity..he hasnt hit 90 in 3 months

hes got more stints on the dl than wins since this thread started

he maybe sandbagging for october

i doubt it though

he was the best pitcher ive ever seen in my life for a 5 year stretch but hes now a shell of himself

what he did do for the mets was get the 1,000,000 dominicans from washington heights interested in ny baseball

and theyve replaced the sox as the team of the spanish folk in nyc

there is no other player as worshipped in the game as petey is

Don't count him out yet, talent like that doesnt just dissapear, he's only 34 also, I doubt we've seen his full potential at this point in his career, but I would agree.... after '08 his pitching days are probably over

Um yes it does. He doesn't throw 97 MPH anymore. Pitchers like him go quickly. Go ask Sandy Koufax.

he was also an important piece to marketing the launch of the Mets TV network, SNY...before the signing Omaya was very pointed in saying that they needed marquis players to make the network successful.

The Sox non-signing of Petey at time sounded like the proper move to me...now I think its becoming more evident that his future is cloudy...but likely includes many a DL trip....not becoming of $13m year pitchers, IMO.

I'll concur with Crunchy, though, on the fact that for about a 5 year period, I personally have never seen a more dominant pitcher in my life....unless I count limited TV viewing, specifically replays of the 1967 and 1968 world series where Bob Gibson absolutely looked like a man pitching against high-schoolers....I'd say that was about equally dominating.

koufax had similar #s againt lesser competetion

nobody was better than our petey

we lost a lot of swagger when that boy left town

part of the benefits the Mets got in signing petey was immediate credibility, swagger and popularity amongst the local spanish...

hes been a real gem in the clubhouse and hasnt pulled this

THEY DONT RESPECT ME OR KNOW ME AS A PERSON ********

he hasnt had a grandmother die or had a sick relative need his attention and has been essentially a model citizen in his short time in queens

i hope he has success for all the good times i recall him on the mound for us

Koufax hadn't lost any velocity. He retired because he was diagnosed with an arthritic condition in his elbow. He acknowledged that he could still pitch, but he retired, because he was uncertain how the condition would affect him later in life. Long story short, when he retired the arthritic condition disappeared. I heard stories that well into his 50's he was still bringing the ball in the 80's at Dodgers ST. The arthritic condition was no doubt from overuse. He pitched a complete game victory in game 7 of the 65 WS on two days rest. He usually worked on 3 days rest. Today, he would be a pampered multi-million property and he would have pitched much longer. Pedro has the advantage of advances in training, sports medicine etc. He'll be effective for some time to come, maybe even after his contract expires, if he wants to keep pitching.

now that the Sox are eliminated, I would like nothing more than for Pedro to lead the Mets through the playoffs with a great performance. Pedro is my favorite player of the generation, and that will not change. Here's to success for Pedro.

Now hes done for 8 months. I've said a million times this is why we didnt give him 4 years. I love Pedro but you had to see this coming. When he comes back sometime next season I hope he dominates but I seriousely doubt it. He old and fragile, Theo made the right move not giving him 4 years. This year would have been ugly too in the AL.

OK they say always go with your gut! I said for a couple of years. Get Pedro OUT of here (better if we traded him), but still I guess I didn't EAT MY WORDS! Why did I ever doubt my powerful brain?

Let me get this straight. You actually wanted him traded before his contract ran out? I mean, I can understand not thinking he was worth the time/money the Mets gave him - that much is apparent now - saying you wanted him gone before his contract ran out is indefensible. In 2004, his worst year ever with the Sox, he had a 3.90 ERA, which is better than any SP the last two years on this team. Might want to rethink that one.
