At some point there will be a new ballpark for the Red Sox. It might be 10 years, and it might be 25. However there will need to be a new park before Fenway hits 125.

Would you want a roof to prevent a 3 day washout like this weekend? I mean they could probably do a pretty good roof by the time we'd need it. I really dont want one, except I really dont want to go 4 days without a 9 nine inning game again.

If they are going to keep the unbalanced schedule and interleague play, which makes it very hard to make up rained out games with non-division opponents, then I think MLB should require that new stadiums have retractable roofs. I don't like domes, but I'm fine with a retractable roof.
Posted
A dome would be evil. A retractable roof....maybe. I still like the totally open air feeling of ballparks like Fenway. Retractable roofs make it seem like its just a dome with a hole in the ceiling.

I was thinking that the AL East needed more retractable roofs, but then I realized we already have 2 domes. The other 3 arent going to change anytime soon.

One real way to avoid this is to play more actual double headres to begin with. That would leave more off-days to use if they needed to.

I want Fenway to go at least to 2012, so it'll have a 100th birthday.

After that, I'd be fine with a new stadium, retracable roof or not.

Posted
I'd love a retractable roof. But only when it's raining. I don't care if it is 30 degrees out, the roof stays opened unless it is raining. And even then that is only when the game couldn't continue otherwise.

I am sorry, but I am really a purist. I would rather have fenway until 2040 with 4 day washouts then have a new ballpark. It's like with the yankee fans I know, they are all fine with a NEW Yankee stadium. What about the history! Yea I am not a fan, but still, it is one of the most famous buildings in the world. a rectratable roof and ESPECIALLY a dome completely destroys all the memories of Teddy Ballgame, of Yaz and the Impossible Dream, of 04, of all those great games. Come on. Keep Fenway till it falls to the ground. Then lets talk.

i think all new stadiums need atleast a retractable roof. Im not a fan of the pure domes, such as Minnesota and Toronto. But i think the retractable ones should be mandatory to all teams creating new ballparks. This makeup games can really affect how a team plays and could contribute to a team not making the playoffs. Say a team at the begining of the season, gets off to a hot start, say 16-4 and a 5 game winning streak. Then their next 2 games get rained out and they have to make them up in June. June comes along and the teams struggling, winning 2 of their last 12. They lose the 2 games and end up not making the playoffs by 1 game. Rainouts are also a pain to re-schedule and screws up pitching matchups.

I hate rain outs!!

I really dont think there will be a new ballpark built in the next 25 years. That beaing said, there is a reason why they continue to revamp Fenway. They plan on staying in Fenway, and I think a new stadium would not give us fans the same special feeling when we walk out of the tunnel and look at the beautiful old ballpark.

Fenway is a special place, I do not want a roof coveing it.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I think everyone wants a roof when we get washed out--but how often does that really happen? There is no way I would want a roof!!!!

Have you been to fenway lately? There is no way they are going anywhere any time soon. They've spent millions so far on upgrades. If you look at fenway 10 years ago compared to now you'd think we already have a new park.

A dome? NO WAY

A retractable? It could happen, but i seriously doubt they'd go that way. I believe they would rather play somewhere else for 2 year's while they totally revamp Fenway. I could see them doing that before building a new park with a dome or a false roof.

thank god for that. I really love fenway. It was the first time I can say I really really enjoyed a baseaball game more than anything else. I'd always loved playing the game, but the atmosphere was just so perfect.

I don't want a roof because the number of rainouts bothers me. I want one because the effects of a rainout can linger after the makeup game is played. Last year, the makeup game with the White Sox took the Red Sox only day off in a long stretch of consecutive games, and you could tell the team was gassed down the stretch. That loss of a day off didn't help. This year they are talking about two double-headers to make up the Rangers games when they come back to Fenway in June. That's 5 games in 3 days. What happens to the starting rotation and bullpen after that?

with the money management pumped into the left field bleacher seats, the right field roof boxes and the renovations outside yawkee way this team isnt going anywhere for the next 20 years minimum...minimum

they sell out for the season by new years day now

they have the most expensive tix in baseball now

they generate the 2nd most revenue in the game

the days of walking into fenway on a sunny saturday and grabbing 4 at the box office are long gone and they wont be back till they build a new ballpark....which aint happenin

If anyone could build a ballpark for Boston it would be this ownership group. I know Fenway isnt going anywhere anytime soon, and I love all the improvements, but someday they will build another park.

I feel a lot better now that I got to watch a dry 9 innings. I'll take Fenway as long as it's safe.

I think more than anything i'd be curious to see plans for a new Boston park, especially one with a roof.

I disagree with your premise.

I plan on being alive more than 25 more years. This will happen over my dead body. The same for Wrigley :-)

Crunch is right.

I'm surprised he didn't give his well-known feelings on the Fenway...I think it was crunchy who says Fenway was built for 1912 a$$es and he'd gladly push the button that implodes the place.

Am I accurate C-man or was it Mean? by the way, I'd gladly swing the wrecking ball myself...I've been there enough and have taken my kids there too...so I'm good.

it was me

that place was built for 1912 asses when the avg man was 5'5 125lbs

they have seats facing centerfield instead of home plate, they put seats in aisles, they remove railings and put in seats, they have 1000 obstructed views, they have the stading room in the right field roof as primo seats, the monster seats are the worst in the building but the novelty of getting them makes them cost 150.00 a piece face value, they have seats on the field along the 1st base line they get 500.00 apiece for face value..

the place is a gold mine as is

as a business man only a fool would move out of there and spend 1B of his own money then have to negotiate with the unions, the neighborhood groups and the city council on a new stadium....it took 30 years of bargaining and bribing to get a new boston garden

it'll take 300 years and a lot of TAXPAYER money to get a new ballpark built.

fenways a s*** hole

8days ago i was at edison field in anaheim...

no contest,it blows fenway away in every single category from cost to comfort

those who have attended games in different cities may want to add their 2cents in as well

the only item fenway brings to the table is closeness and ball park atmosphere

and even the ballpark atmosphere is leaving us because this ownership group has priced middle class families out of the building and now we're left with corporate schills and the biffs and buffies of the world on their fukin cell phones

CAN YOU SEE ME NOW??

HIIIIIIII BIFFF

HIIII MUFFFY...CAN YOU SEE ME CAN YOU SEE ME??

meanwhile when you scream at the umpire for blowing a call the guy next to you wants you to apologize because you interuppted his conference call by cheering too loudly??

fenway??

I love Fenway and all it's problems. Don't underestimate it's charms. It's a lasting legacy to baseball. Real baseball before it became the 2nd sport.

However, I have been to RFK, and that place sucks to watch a ballgame. I went to PacBell, and it was nice, but it didnt blow Fenway away in the manner I expected. Turner Field is nice too, but it doesnt blow Fenway away either. (Seating alignment being the major difference) I actually liked Atlanta Fulton County SWtadium the best, but that could be because I wanted to see where the great Dale Murphy played.

Many places have it better than us, but nobody actually has it better if you know what I mean.

The JCL's do get on my nerves though. I have been quieted a few times at Fenway for making too much noise. That really gets on my nerves, and is one of the few things that actually makes me confrontational. Since when did encouraging your team become a problem at a ballgame.

Money dictates that we wont get a park anytime soon, and the new owners have done their best for those that can afford to get in. Maybe they should close Lansdowne and rebuild the stadium proper.

good post trotter

beauty is indeed in the eyes of the beholder

camden is awesome

i like yankee stadium too

shea is a s*** hole and should be torched

rfk is a football stadium and based on the attendence for the nationals it should remain so

as a 40yr old dad i look for things like comfort and cost

im not a big man but i go 5-10 215 and most of my friends are similar in girth

4 men my size cant sit side by side with any comfort at all.

when someone mentions the ""charm"" of fenway all i picture is the stench of 100 year old hotdog water, unflushed public toilets and the biting stench of piss@puke

of course NOT, part of going to a ballgame is to watch your team rain or shine, hot or cold, humid or dry.

roofs take away from the game, the wind factor, the humidity factor, the temperature. no way do i want any sort of covering over a baseball field.

I wouldnt be a fan of having a roof. Especially for the redsox. I think playing through the elments of nature is just as much a part of the game of baseball, as hitting, pitching and defense.

retractable would be nice like in minute maid park but not like the metro dome. i heard that before the 100th anniversary they are rebuilding fenway. it might be enough to keep fenway alive. Heck, i would still go now(can't belive i said heck). Fenway is just a nice place to be at regardless of the age of the park. i am ignorant on this topic but it's different then other parks. who has the monster, the pesky pole, the triangle. I like it. We might have a rain drought now. But it's May, it rains a lot in spring. Just wait for summer, it will be fine.

This is what worries me. It's what's been happening in Foxboro; all the "magic" and "atmosphere" of the old Foxboro stadium is disapearing. Anytime you even stand up some knucklehead tells you to sit down, and you better not make too much noise and upset some of the people on their cell phones. All of the "real fans" are too far away from the field to make any real difference in game. I just hope Fenway doesn't turn into that.

we had season tix in foxboro for 20 years

the original cost was 12 per ticket

20 yrs later it was 100

then kraft started the nickel and diming and pimping that continues to this day

""service fees"" ""handling fees"" ""seat licenses""

the luckiest man on earth is bob kraft but i do appreciate the fact that the patriots didnt cost the taxpayers of massachusetts too much money for the route 1 development and the new building was indeed paid for by the owner, not the taxpayers
