Thats hilarious - Joe Torre the chess player. Torre is an awful in game manager and most Yankee fans hate that part of his managing style. They also hate his loyalty to vets similar to what Tito does sometimes.

Baseball managers for the most part are overrated. Most teams will win and lose based on talent and timely hitting/pitching. Most of the time the only real decision to make (in the AL) is when to make pitching moves. Other than that theres not a whole lot to do in game as you don't make many lineup moves and the Sox don't really steal bases.

Torre was never a good game manager, and now, whether due to advancing senile dementia or something, he is worse. His job has been veryt easy for the last 10 years, because he has only had to manage the first 7 innings of each game. A combination of Mo and one or two other top relievers took care of the last two innings. If his starter gave him a quality start, he essentially had no decisions to make after submitting the lineup card.

You have followed the Red Sox for 50 years? Wow!!!! Then I will take your admonition like a good sport. I mean you have seen just about all of it in that time and I can see why you give Francona some real credit. I always use the term "field general" in baseball; one of the few who do. Hey maybe this will make you feel better and make me an ally in all of this. In '56 the year you became a Red Sox fan they sent Malzone down for the third time and some said he was ruined. Plus he was 26 years old. However, in 1957 he came up to stay at 27 (Youkalis' age) and he went 292-15-103. Believe it or not, I memorized that from years ago; it is not from some book I have with me now. Know why? Back in 1957 they had an award Italian Ballplayer of the Year and they gave it to Brooklyn's Gino Cimoli which pleased me because I was a Brooklyn fan (for the last time it turned out) Cimoli hit 293-10-57, certainly not in Malzone's class. Now as I look back at it Frank got screwed but he was Rookie of the Year in the AL, with the only problem he should have been at #B as early as 1955. Grady Hatton and Ted Lepcio were dogs.

In 57 Malzone wasn't "Rookie of the Year" Tony Kubek of the Yankees was.

But, your right about Hatton and Lepcio, Hatton's best years were with the Reds and they weren't even that good, Lepsio was a second basemen, No bat...good glove.

In 56 the Red Sox were trying everyone at third, Malzone was up for awhile and they tried Milt Bolling a second basemen and Billy Klaus a short stop at third. Malzone got the job in 57 and the rest is history. Malzone was up in 55 but only for a cup of coffee, 4 games I think?

Crunchman, it will be more pleasurable for you to read of the Yankees misery than it will be for me. Not that I will enjoy it less that the Yankees lost and we won, but the way I looked at the games before they were played. I was moaning all to hell that with Kazmir pitched for the Rays and the portly Wells for us we would be facing almost certain defeat. Good thing I didn't bet my house the way it turned out. Not content enough to look like just a half-ass jackass I said the Yankees were even a bigger certainty to win over a KC team that had lost 13 straight and hadn't won in YS since 2002. Talk about coming up empty. So you read that stuff and enjoy it for both of us as I remember this is baseball and anything can happen, and if you go off the deep end you might wind up looking like a moron. Still, somehow I do feel a lot better this morning. Enjoy your reading.

Malzone, goofed on the ROTY. Malzone should have gotten, though. He drove in 103 runs for Pete's sake. I think Kubek hit around 297 but Malzone had many more ribbies than Tony did, and what is amazing about those hundred plus RBI's is that he did it with only 15 homers.

Kubek getting the "Rookie of the Year" for 57 has always been one of the great injustices in baseball history. He got it solely because he was a Yankee and for no other reason. Look at the numbers, Kubek, G-127 AB-431 HR-3 RBI-39 BA .297, Now look at Malzone G-153 AB-634 HR-15 RBI-103 BA-.292 clearly who deserved it more.

Out of 24 votes for Rookie of the Year, Kubek got 23 and Malzone got 1. From 55 through 64 the Yankees were in every World Series except 59 and only lost twice to Milwaukee in 57 and 58. Mantle was the MVP in 57 and the Yankees had the highest profile manager in the game at that time Casey Stengel. From coast to coast the newspapers sports page's were saturated with Yankee press and all Boston had at that time was an aging Teddy Ballgame, Jackie Jensen, and Jim Piersal and Piersal was about at the end of his wire, a scrub manager in Pinky Higgins who got the Sox to 82-72 16 games out. So the only press Malzone was getting was local. The name Yankees got Kubek his "Rookie of the Year" because it certainly wasn't his numbers that got it for him.

Coco is rehabbing in Pawtucket this weekend: http://www.pawsox.com/

Boston Red Sox outfielder Coco Crisp will be heading to Pawtucket for a brief rehab stint this weekend. Crisp, who has been on Boston’s disabled list since April 9 with a non-displaced fracture at the base of his left index finger (suffered on an awkward slide into third base during an unsuccessful steal attempt on April 8 in Baltimore), will be at McCoy Stadium for Pawtucket’s game vs. Norfolk this Saturday at 6:05 pm.

Malzone, shame on you. You insulted this old Brooklyn Dodgers fan with that thing about the Yankees losing only two World Series' between 1955-1964. They lost twice alright but not in 1958. The came back from a 3-1 deficit to beat the Yankees in that one, which happened to be the miserable year of my life. They lost that second WS to Brooklyn in 1955. As far as Malzone and the ROTY I can now be forgiven for not knowing he didn't win it because his numbers were so much better than Tony's that I thought it a given that he did win that award.

It should be Willie Harris who sucks to high heaven but it will probably be Van Buren.

Neither. Just announced Willy Mo has been disabled.

Hey guys, instead of printing our lineup maybe should list who might be coming in from the bullpen to try and blow a game for us. You see what happened today? Can one of Tito's supporters explain to me why he keep using those two bums and not give Riske a chance to pitch, or Delcarmen, who goes up and down like an elevator, or Van Buren? Why are they even on the team is Francona isn't going to give them a chance to pitch. Fact is, Seanez and Taverez are doing a crappy job and right now anything would be an improvement.

Riske has had the flu over the last few days.

Delcarmen has been worse then Seanez in his apperances.

Taverez and Seanez have actually done extremely well in their last few outings. If you want someone to blame, blame Doug Mirabelli. He's dropped a strike three call that allowed that game to get out of hand.

Oh, and Josh Bard has 5 HR. FYI.

What the hell does it matter, We won Wake pitched lights out and we are in first place. Plus Bard would have never hit here he would have been to concrened with catching the Knuckle Ball, he would have been distracted at the plate.

If you are saying that Bard is better than Mirabelli you obviously did not watch Wake's starts in April. Bard was worsening Wake by being behind the plate. And it was in no way Mirabelli's fault that Tavarez and Seanez walked 5 and gave them 4 runs

Seanex walked the bases loaded in a 5 run game, sorry Im not going to give him a free pass. Him doing that didnt make the game get out of hand? I cringe each time that he's out there, we're probably going to be seeing more of him in close games since Timlin's hurt.

Glad to see so many of us are on the same page with Seanez. The guy cannot pitch in Boston; he couldn't do the job in 2002 and he can't now. Theo has to learn that once a player fails in Boston and goes elsewhere it is NOT a good idea to bring him back. Seanez has to go to a quiet NL city where expectations aren't too high and he can relax and pitch. He cannot do that here because expectations are through the roof, and like many of you I cringe when he goes into the game. He pitches better when we are behind than when we are ahead. He has to go as soon as he is eligible to you, though Crespo did make one very good point. Mirabelli was lazy as sin with that missed passed ball on strike three. There was no excuse for him missing that ball except a lack of concentration. Then, again, having the arduous task of catching a pitcher who can't find the plate and is a disaster waiting to happen, I guess he can even be excused for that.
