Byrd tries to get on track in rubber game vs. Red Sox

Boston (13-8) at Cleveland (11-10) 7:05 pm EDT

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- After a humbling defeat in his previous start, Paul Byrd will attempt to bounce back in time to help the Cleveland Guardians claim Thursday's rubber game of a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox.

Byrd (2-2, 9.15 ERA) was tagged for seven runs and six hits in three innings of Saturday's 11-5 loss to Kansas City, which had managed just 32 runs in losing each of its previous 11 games.

Signed to a two-contract over the winter, Byrd has allowed at least five runs in three of his first four starts as a member of the Guardians. Last year, he ranked second in the American League with 22 quality starts.

The 35-year-old Byrd went 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA in 2005 against the Red Sox, who have dropped four of their last six games on the heels of a four-game winning streak. Wednesday's 7-1 defeat here marked the third straight time Boston managed one run or less in games started by Tim Wakefield.

Josh Beckett (3-0, 2.54) will try to remain undefeated in his American League career when he faces Cleveland for the first time. The 2003 World Series Most Valuable Player, Beckett won his first three starts of the season before allowing five runs in 7 1/3 innings of an eventual 12-inning, 7-6 loss to Toronto on Friday.

The 25-year-old Beckett has won his last six decisions, dating to last season, postinbg a 2.28 ERA in eight starts over that span.

Jhonny Peralta hit a three-run homer in the first inning of Wednesday's 7-1 triumph - Cleveland's second win it its last seven games. Aaron Boone doubled and drove in two runs for the Guardians, who own a .304 team batting average and lead the AL with 127 runs scored this season.

we need a win here, if beckett is sharp, which he is perfectly capable of being we really need to give him run support. The jays are right behind us, and not like standings really matter by 1 game or a half a game this early, but from a morale standpoint it would be nice if we could get a win.

they truly don't, but if you want to look at anything, look at the loss column. April schedules are very unbalanced between the teams and many teams play 2-3 more games in april than others....

And I like the fact that the Sox are getting more days off later in the season. It's not very significant, but it is a scheduling advantage in their favor.

it all evens out. What I find brutal is he middle of the sox schedule and the end of the yankee schedule...

Look at what you said. The Sox middle of the year. It doesn't even out, we'll be fresh for the playoffs while you'll be limping in... that's IF you make it.

More spin. How can you defend the idea that it is the same to have 5 days off in April and 2 off in September compared to 3 off in April and 4 off in September? Yeah, it's easy to give players a breather in Sept when the rosters expand, but if you are in a pennant race, the more days off you have, the more you can rest the regulars without sacraficing performance. Like I said, it's not a huge advantage, but it is an advantage nonetheless.

What, you cannot recognize that this is a place for Sox fans? Call it unfair, but I think a Sox board is a place that Sox fans should expect to be free from Yankee fan baiting. But rooting for your team isn't good enough for you, you have to come try and s*** on Sox fans' good time in order to complete your day.

This team never ceases to amaze me. We really gotta win tonight, and now we gotta battle back. A grand slam in the first, lets hope that's all they get...

Also, doesn't Paul Byrd have like a 10.00 ERA? We're certainly making him look a lot better than that.

This team REALLY pisses me off sometimes. Lets rally for a win!
