Hartford Courant

FORT MYERS, Fla -- . - For the first two weeks of spring training, David Wells was mum about his trade request. Now that he has rescinded it, he's back to being himself.

That was apparent Wednesday when Wells blasted commissioner Bud Selig as the Red Sox were preparing to play the Orioles in a Grapefruit League game at City of Palms Park.

And with this likely being his final season, the outspoken Wells did not hold back.

"Bud Selig needs to resign. That's what he needs to do," Wells said. "He needs to resign and bring someone in who's capable of communicating with the players association and the owners, as well as the players, because there's so much hatred against Bud right now. It's a joke. Nobody likes him."

Wells, who estimated 95 percent of the players dislike Selig, was set off by a New York Times story where the commissioner ordered the Yankees to remove sign at Legends Field in Tampa that apologized to fans because players such as Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Johnny Damon are not playing in exhibition games. All three, along with Bernie Williams and Al Leiter, are participating in the World Baseball Classic.

Steinbrenner has criticized the international tournament, fearing that some Yankees could get injured or become fatigued down the stretch.

"And he's entitled to that [opinion]. He pays a lot of money to these guys," Wells said. "If he needs to apologize to the fans, so be it. They get a lot of traffic down there in Tampa to see the Yankees. People want to see Derek Jeter. So if he wants to post a sign that says I apologize for [him] not being here, he owns the place. If Bud has a problem with it, tell him to go take it down himself. And then I'd re-post it again."

The New York Times reported the Yankees did not sanction the sign, which was taken down.

"This is just something where Bud is bored. He has no clue. He's clueless," Wells said. "If you say something derogatory toward Bud, he wants an apology. My question is, why is he even wasting his time on something like that? What's the purpose? Does he have to let people know that he's there? Tell him to come talk to me. I've had issues with him the last few years. He said, `Oh, we need to talk.' He said, `I'll take you to dinner when I come to Boston.' Has he done it? [Heck] no. He's a piece of [expletive]. And you can quote me on that."

It's not the first time Wells has criticized Selig. He called the commissioner "an idiot" last spring and accused him trying to break the players' union.

Then in August, Wells directed some comments at Selig after baseball upheld a six-game suspension Wells received in July for an on-the-field altercation he had with two umpires. Wells also said the Selig was responsible for the steroid scandal and charged that Selig knew Rafael Palmeiro had tested positive for steroids but waited to suspend him until after the Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Two days later, Wells met with executives from Major League Baseball and the union in New York. The players association released a statement on behalf of Wells, who apologized to the commissioner. Selig did not attend the meeting.

"Bud has a hard time leaving Milwaukee, let alone going out and trying to do [anything]," Wells said Tuesday. "It's almost a burden for him to have to go to New York or a city like that. If he has that much passion for the game of baseball, then why isn't he doing something good for it? Name one good thing he's done for the game of baseball.

"He worries about what people say about him and he Googles himself. I'm sure he's going to Google [his name] tomorrow and say, `Oh, there's Dave talking about me.' You know what? Be a man of your words. He's ducked me for two years."

Selig really hasn't done much good for the game, much really make it worse then it ever was.

For me it's not that he hasn't done anything good for baseball ... it's that he didn't do anything about steorids.

95%?

I doubt 95% of them have even met Selig...

Selig isn't a great commissioner. He will be remembered for being slow to regulate steroids, and for this WBC debacle...

Yes for steroids, but I'm actually starting to warm up to the WBC.

I have enjoyed the WBC so far. The WBC is the only thing he will be remembered for.

20 years later

Man1- Yeah who was the commisioner of the MLB when they started the WBC?

Man2- I dunno, I think his name was Bud Slugie

He made the Wild Card ultimately giving the Angels, Red Sox, and Marlins all World Series wins.

He also tried to crack down on steroids but the Union would hear nothing of it untill the flood gates finally opened for all to see.

In the end he's done a pretty good job.

I'm enjoying as well for now, but I am going to with hold my judgement until the end of the season when we see the (possible) effects it has on the players. Also, there haven't been any injuries yet. Wait till someone blows their season playing in this thing, and then see how many people support it...

I agree with Sizlin. He may not be the best commisioner, but to say hes done nothing for baseball is pretty idiotic. He was the driving force behind the wild card and creating 6 divisions. He was also a key player in creating interleague play. Not everyone loves interleague play, but its not a bad thing.

I forgot about that. Was he the Commish when Inter-league play was introduced too?

edit: nm, just saw post above.

I was also going to mention the 3 devision/4 playoff spot system. I think that was a great move. A ton more teams are in it, and if you get in, anyone can win.

95% does seem a little high, I don't see 95% of the players as having a reason to hate him.

A lot of people dont like Selig. I however think he's great. Just all the things he's done. Building baseball back up after the strike, expansion in 98, wild card, interleague, WBC, etc, etc, etc

By turning a blind eye to steroids.

Surprised a Yankee fan would even mumble a luke warm criticism of Selig; after all he has just about kissed Steinbrenner's ass since he has been in command. Of course, you Yankee fans should get on his case, too, because, face it, he cannot hold David Stern or Paul Tagliabue's jock as a commissioner. He hasn't marketed baseball worth a damn, and all he does is look out for Bud Selig. He has been totally AWOL on the steroids issue and even now he is mumbling platitudes about the problem with the juicers while doing nothing about it.

I heard Tagliabue might be steppin down as commish of the NFL, which i would hate, sicne he's done such a great job. I really cannot wait for Selig to step down or something unless he can ge his act together.

I don't understand why Tagliabue wants to step down, he has really done a good job.

I agree, out of all the leagues (NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB) he has made his league the best competitively and has donw wonders for the game. I eman, tehre's always one team that dark-horses it's way deep into the playoffs and some of the elite teams can always get knocked off by any otehr team. Whereas in MLB we have the Sox and Yanks with their ridiculous salaries who can buy talent whenever needed.

Champ, I hate to step on your parade but Selig is not going to get his s#$t together any time soon, and the Lords of Baseball have no intention of firing him because he mouths their words almost verbatum. No, all we can hope for is that he finally gets some balls and comes down hard on Bonds and those other juicers and institutes a strict drug testing policy this year. Just don't hold your breath waiting for it to happen.

Did this guy Monty really say such a stupid thing as that in all seriousness? He needs to me taken to the woodshed post haste. Well, Yankee fans are a wierd breed, aren't they?

I'm not as good as I once was but I'm as good once as I ever was.

What the hell are you talking about? A new policy has already been put into place.

Sorry #22, I meant it for my Yankee friend 26-6. Sorry to have confused you and Manny. I know you are a Red Sox fan. If I confused you, it is probably because I confused myself with another Senior moment. I have them from time to time. I still hold fast to the belief that Selig does a lot of talking but does little. Yes, I know about his new policy. I also know he announced to all that he was suspending drug testing early last summer just before Giambi went on a tear. I don't trust the guy.

He never announced he was suspending testing early last year. Testing lasted all year. How do you think they caught guys like Matt Lawton and stuff.

What policy? Yeh, I know what he said and what he put into writing, but may I remind you that he announced to all juicers last summer that we was suspending drug testing for the rest of the season? Of course, you might have like that because soon after, miraculously, Jason the Juicer went on a tear. That's what I'm talking about. I will defer to you as soon as I see that "new and tough" policy put into action. Action, not words, resonate with me. Have you heard of any drug testing so far this spring? I haven't. Time to start this policy you think is so swell is NOW!!!!! Let's catch those cheaters before the season begins, and insitutute random testing every month. Either that or let the Congress under McCain and Feingold pass legislation mandating it. I'm fed up with these juicers pulling that crap and that goes for your Giambi and Scheffield.

Fred, you're going crazy man. The new policy has been in place since it was agreed to by the Union. They have been testing players all along.

And again, I dont know why you didnt get it the first time I said it, but he didt suspend, or plan to suspend drug testing at all last year. He tested the entire year. Otherwise he wouldnt have gotten guys like Matt Lawton, who tested positive in SPETEMBER (Way after you claim that he stopped testing). Just because they dont go public and say "well we tested player x today" doesnt mean their not testing. When somebody tests positive you will know it.
