Wow, I just turned on the DR/Cuba game to see what was up and it was only on for a minute or so before Papi hit one that still hasn't landed!!!!:o It was a bomb that left the entire stadium! After he hit it, he turned around and gave a dirty look to the Cuban catcher, and then the catcher started yelling at the pitcher. The announcers said something like papi was thinking "you don't forget who your playing here!" Anyway it's 6-0 DR!

A big "nayh-nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah" to all htose players who declined the invitation to play for their country. That includes you Mr. I-piss-and-moan-about-my-contract-every-year-which-is-why-I-married-one-of-R. Kelly's-piss-and-moaners.

There's an ESPN article where Jeter is quoted as saying he's had several calls expressing remorse about not participating in the event. There was so much skepticism going in that I doubted how good this thing would be, but the games have been exciting, even some of the blow-outs.

And, yeah, that Ortiz shot was an absolute bomb. The pitcher tried to come inside with a FB and left out over the plate about belt high. The cookie monster gobbled that bitch up.

I still don't get people who were against this. I mean, when you get marquee stars playing for their country, how else is it going to turn out? These aren't spoiled NBA brats. And besides, it's October baseball in March

poor fellow, I've seen that movie too many times.

I wish I would have been able to see that Ortiz shot. I didnt get home until 4:30 from PT. When I turned it off to come on the computer it was 7-1 I think. But I wasnt too into it, I was watching the Cubs/Rockies game.

I gotta reiterate what I said, although I don't think those comments about the meaningless baseball were directed at me....

I don't think it's meaningless. Far from. In my opinion, NO baseball is meaningless. It's a love of the game...and how can anyone ever say that something like the WBC is meaningless????? :o

It's not a World Series....but the two events have different meaning...I don't think they're really comparable. I've had an absolute blast watching the way different countries play. It's been great.

Anyone who says this is meaningless obviously has a different concept of the meaning to baseball. :(

i wouldnt brag about that ,japan has barely any major leaguers in their lineup, and it isnt because of the yankee players that their this far its because of Lee,not to mentioned the big controversial call in the 8 inning

Japan is a very good team. Not everybody in the majors are the best players out there. There are many japanese players that could easily be in the majors. They choose to stay where their comfortable. A yankee won it, so I said yankees. It was a joke.

Actually, not all of them are there by choice. Several of their players want their Japanese clubs to post them but have been turned down thus far.

just noticed that all of Ortiz's hits in the WBC have been HR's. he and pujols have been pretty inconsitent in the tournament so far.

Seriously.. are they preempting the USA game til 2 AM? WE LIVE IN THE f***ING USA.

I hate ESPN.

Yeah! I was pissed about this! They were playing it live in Mexico....but not in the USA. WTF.

ya i stayed up to watch it---after it was 6-1 i just checked the score on ESPNEWS and went to bed---no need to waste anymore time while the usa gets beaten down by the koreans!

Oh ya, once i saw the USA guys flailing at pitches by BK Kim that were 2 feet out of the strikezone, i knew we were in trouble!

wat do u think of wbc replacing allstar game?

i think they should do away with the All Star game (just make it an award) and also do away with the inter-league play. Play the WBC in late June early July.

I love the All-Star game. :) I also think I like the WBC being played before the start of the actual season. It's like having competitive baseball a month early.

Am I in the wrong thread??? Korea vs Japan is a tight game right now. 0-0 in the 6th, if Japan wins the USA goes home I think. ..... something about 7 runs also plays into it.

Good game though. I have no idea why it's not on ESPN/2 right now. <_>

ESPN has egg on it's face over it's broadcast times of WBC games. This has been an unbelievable tournament thus far, and some of the most exciting/tense games have been shown at 2/3/4 a.m. instead of being aired live. Their handling of this, like showing women's soft-ball tonight instead of the Japan/Korea game, has been disgraceful.

I agree.....ESPN's main focus right now should be the WBC. It would get them the best ratings but they chose not to show all the games live.

so if USA were to loose against mexico, would they still advance or would it be decided by the outcome of the runs scored in that game?

No USA wins and goes on--lose and go home!

ESPN has missed the boat on this one. What was really stupid is how they do that with the USA games as well as the others. Between the tiebreakers that you need a slide rule for, and BSPN's coverage---it's been a little sketchy, learn from your mistakes guys and get better!

Actually, the US can lose and go on to the semi's. The first TB (tie-breaker) is head-to-head, and the second is RA/9 against teams in the tie. If the US loses to Mexico, then there will be 3 teams with a 1-2 record, and all three would be 1-1 in games against the other two. That means the runs-allowed per nine-innings against each other would determine who advances. In games involving those three teams, they have given up the following amounts of runs.

US - 3 (against Japan)

Japan - 5 (against US/Mexico)

Mexico - 6 (against Japan)

Here's a breakdown of the advancing scenarios for each team from the WBC site:

U.S. advances if:

It defeats Mexico

It loses to Mexico, allowing 1 run in a regulation game (8 innings in the field)

It loses to Mexico, but does not allow a 2nd run until after it has played 8 2/3 innings in the field

It loses to Mexico, but does not allow a 3rd run until after it has played 12 1/3 innings in the field

It ties with Mexico, allowing 3 runs in 14 innings

Japan advances if:

The U.S. loses to Mexico, and allows 2 runs or more before it has played 8 2/3 innings in the field

The U.S. loses to Mexico, and allows 3 runs or more before it has played 12 1/3 innings in the field

Mexico advances if:

It defeats the U.S., 3-0, in 13 innings
