Ozzie Guillen's Shot At A-Rod And Nomar

Ozzie's comments, while probably a little true, weren't called for. That said, just because he speaks his mind doesn't make him a media whore. It just makes him honest.

That's what his motto is, the truth. He speaks what he percieves to be the truth and doesn't care what anybody thinks about him, even if he's way off.

Ozzie Guillen Apologizes to A - Rod

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- During his two seasons as manager of the Chicago White Sox, Ozzie Guillen has fired off opinions and profanity-filled declarations on a variety of topics and personalities.

On Friday, he added a rare offering to his repertoire -- an apology.

Guillen apologized to Alex Rodriguez for comments he made in a Sports Illustrated article in which he criticized the Yankees star for waffling on his choice of countries for the World Baseball Classic.

''I learned a lesson. I never took a first shot at anybody in my life and now I feel like I took the first shot. I feel embarrassed, I feel guilty. I wish I had not said it the way it sounds or the way I said it,'' Guillen said at a news conference at the White Sox spring training complex on reporting day for pitchers and catchers.

Guillen, who led the White Sox to their first World Series title since 1917 in just his second season as manager, said he spent a sleepless night Thursday after seeing his quotes on TV and in print.

In the SI article, which was centered mainly around Guillen's visit to a Venezuelan prison, the manager gave his opinion on several subjects, including Rodriguez's decision on which team to play for in the WBC.

Rodriguez was born in the United States but his parents are Dominican. So he had a choice. He first thought he would play for the Dominican Republic, then he was not going to play at all before finally deciding to participate with Team USA.

''He knew he wasn't going to play for the Dominicans. He's not a Dominican. I hate hypocrites. He's full of (bleep),'' Guillen said in the article.

Guillen tried to explain his remarks Friday.

''I don't call him a hypocrite in that way. Alex is not a hypocrite. I was just trying to say he doesn't have to please people. He doesn't have to make people from the United States or from the Dominican Republic or from Venezuela happy. When you do that, you sound like you are a hypocrite. You say, 'Hey I want to play for the United States and that's the team I belong on,' move on and that's it.''

Guillen said he didn't want Rodriguez to have to deal with the issue at spring training when he reports and would call him, if necessary.

''I apologize to Alex Rodriguez, his family, his fans, the New York Yankee organization, to the White Sox organization,'' Guillen said.

you were saying?

Seriously though, what a jhoke. I'm so sick of people mouthing off to the media and then apologizing for it. How about keeping your mouth shut. And the gyuy forgot to apologize to Nomar. When the hell has Nomar ever said anything negative about Ozzie?

Hey thanks Ozzie, now why don't you and Schilling join the "zip our mouths" shut support group and we can all get back to baseball.

I bet George sent "some guys" to go & meet with Ozzie. ;)

Seriously though, this is the first time he has taken back one of his remarks.

Because he knows he was wrong. He was talking out of his ass to SI.

He wasn't wrong though, I'm willing to bet a superior made him do this.

A-Rod is not a Dominican, he never has been a Dominican, he never will be a Doiminican. The whole thing was stupid it would be like me saying, you know what I'm gonna go to the Olympics but instead of representing America, I'm going to represent Ireland. I was born and raised in Connecticut and have never been within a thousand miles of the island, but both my families are from there so who the hell cares?

Haha. It sounds like George is not liking Guillen all that much, even with his apology.

Yahoo! Sports: Steinbrenner unhappy with Guillen comments

February 18, 2006

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- George Steinbrenner wants Ozzie Guillen to zip his lips. The New York Yankees owner didn't appreciate a shot the Chicago White Sox manager took at Alex Rodriguez, remarks Guillen later apologized for. "Shut it up," Steinbrenner said Saturday, moving his hands across his lips in a zipper move. "I like Ozzie Guillen as a manager, but I don't like him when he pops off like that," the Boss said, following with a profanity.

Guillen criticized Rodriguez for saying he would play for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, then switching to the United States. Rodriguez was born in the United States but his parents are Dominican. After making the critical remarks to Sports Illustrated, Guillen apologized Friday. Steinbrenner didn't think Rodriguez would be bothered by the remark. "When he gets with the team here, it will be fine. Count on A-Rod," Steinbrenner said. Steinbrenner sat at the batting cage with manager Joe Torre toward the end of Saturday's workout.

False analogy.

Have you ever lived in Ireland, for several years?

No as I said I've never been within a thousand miles of the place. The point is he isn't a Dominican. This was A-Rod being the normal PR whore that he is Ozzie was jsut the only on ewith the balls enough to call him on it.

Well if thats the case why is Mike Piazza who was born in Norristown, PA playing for Italy? Frank Catalanotto was born in Smithtown NY is playing for Italy. David DeJesus born in Brooklyn NY is playing for Puerto Rico. Danny Haren born in Monterey Park, CA is playing for Netherlands same with Mark Mulder who was born in Chicago. All 5 of these players are playing for countries that they werent born or raised in. Should they be playing for those teams? Because if the anwser is no then the whole damn WBC is a sham.

EXACTLY, I've been againt Piazza playing for Italy the entire time. If you were born in the U.S you should play for the U.S. If you were born in the D.R you should play for the D.R.

The only real exception is if like you were born in the US and then moved to the Dominican when you were like a toddler and then lived there the rest of your life. That's fine. But if you lived there for a few years, that doesn't really work out.

I actually agree with your point also. What I think happend was MLB wanted to make more teams and fill out the rosters and add stars to those teams so they asked guys like Piazza to play for Italy, same with Nomar and Mexico etc.

If you look at the rosters: http://www.worldbaseballclassic.com/2006/rosters/index.jsp?sid=t944

Italy doesnt have one player on it (That I know) playing for Italy. So if they went by the rule that you have to be born in that country the Italian team wouldnt even exist. Same goes for the Netherlands. Both teams wouldnt have a shot.

Again, I will say again. A-Rod did spend several years of his childhood in the Dominican. And your reference to the Olympics, look at 2004's Greek Baseball team. It was filled with Americans who they had apply for Greek citizenship. (Dont have the roster in front of me but remember reading a huge article on it prior to the 04 games in the Daily News. I know Clay Bellenger was on the Greek team).

And I still dont see why on earth you guys are complaining about the players playting for countries of their ancestry. I think it's great. That is how yo properly promote the game. Little Arturo in Voltera liekly could care less about the WBC, but the fact that Mike Piazza, somebody who is pretty well known in Italy (due to charity work and MLB promoting in Italia), i'm sure he will pay a little more attention.

Venezuela doesn't look that bad at all. Also theyre selling team jersey's at Olympia Sports, I almost bought an Italia one. The USA ones arent that good at all. The Dominican ones are pretty good.

Do they have the names on the back? I want to get a Piazza Italia jersey, or a Damon, Clemens, or Jeter USA jersey.

Also..looks like Georgie didnt take too kindly to Mr. Guillen "popping off"

Who cares what 'Georgie" has to say about it. He needs to be spending his time figuring out how his team is going to make it in the playoffs over both pairs of Sox

Of note: Ozzie Guillen is an #######.

why because he is saying things a lot of people want to say? He can do that. He just took his team to the WS and won it. He can say what he wants, he's on the top right now, so he can say what he feels like

Posted

He has a censor on his computer.

Even though I'm a die-hard Sox fan, GIARSF, I don't think you would be saying that the Yankees manager can say whatever he wants if their team won the WS last year...

Besides, the guy was talking s*** before his team won it all. It's how he is.

Ok yea you got a point there, but i like the idea that he's saying it, it shows the guys has some balls. I like the idea, that he is saying what a lot of us want to say. I like how Ozzie is. He says what he feels like saying straight up. And some people say it's a publicity stunt, but i don't think it is, when his team just won the WS

Oh OK ......................

 Seriously though, I said something about it in another thread, Kobe or MJ I think, and he said he doesn't do that himself. Then it got pretty funny when a few people thought there was a new curse censor on Talksox and we had a couple "f***" posts...

Are you sure you're also not saying this just because he took a shot at A-Rod?
