Looks like the Lowell Spinners, Class A (Short Season, NY Penn League) affiliate of the Sox are trying to get all NEw England youth baseball leagues to get rid of teams called the Yankees. They are offering to pay for the new uniforms of youth leagues (That have a team named the Yankees) who change their Yankees' team name to the Spinners.

Posted

Red Sox fans understand how devastating it can be for any child to be on a Yankees youth baseball team in New England. The Spinners have heard stories first-hand of children actually crying and refusing to play if they have to play for the Yankees. The Spinners believe they have found an answer to the problem.

???When you are a kid playing baseball it is pure fun and worrying about what team you are on should be the least of your concerns,??? said Tim Bawmann, General Manager of the Spinners. ???It becomes an issue where kids are devastated when they find out they are on the Yankees. Many kids actually pray they will not be on the Yankees when the rosters and teams are announced.

???We figured the easiest and best solution was replace those Yankee teams with the Spinners, who are part of the Boston Red Sox system. We would like to make a point that this promotion is all in good fun and is merely meant to appeal to Red Sox Nation in New England.???

That's pretty petty if you ask me.

Considering your avatar, I tend to think that this type of judgement is well beyond your maturity level.

So you can make jokes about the gayness of Arod and Jeter and I can't have a simple, funny, avatar? :dunno:

Edit-and I don't mean YOU individually I mean Red Sox fans in general

Where do I say you can't have that avatar? My comment was more of a "people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" type of thing.

Whatever you poke fun at the Yanks, I poke fun at the Red Sox. Harmless fun guys. Just like its harmless to have "Yankees" written across your chest in little league. I just don't see the point of making a fuss about it. When I played little league when I was 10 I was on the Mets. Yeah, I may have kicked some dirt around but I didn't cry and I certainly didn't threaten to give up the sport entirely.

Who wants to be eight years old and have to put on the colors of the team you hate the most? If I was eight, and had to play for the "Yankees", I would've probably cried at the very least and likely quit. (I still wouldn't like it very much if my High School team adopted the name)

Not to mention, what a thrill for the kids getting to play in such a nice ballpark for a game. Great idea by one of the best promotional teams in minor league ball, It's a brilliant marketing campaign they've come up with. I wouldn't be surprised if Little Leagues in the tri-state area start doing the same thing with the Red Sox, and it wouldn't bother me.

Like I said, it is a brilliant marketing campaign by the Spinners, not hatred toward the Yanks...

 Really because I think it's blatant hatred for the Yankees. It's not like they are getting rid of a bunch of teams no one wants to be, like the Rockies, Yankees, Devil Rays, etc. They are singling them out.

Whatever it's pointless.

HUGE news locally here, as I live a 5 minute drive from LeLaucher Park (thats right, isnt it?). Front page news on the Lowell Sun and s***.

I think this is a ludacris thing though. What the f*** does it matter if you play on the Yankees. Its not like you have to be a fan of the team anyways.

Why are Yankee fans acting like this is terrible? If you're a little 10 year old Yankee fan, and you get put on the Sox, they'd be pissed too.

Which fans are acting like its terrible? 26 to 6 mentioned the article, and pinstripe pride thought it was petty. I didn't see the word "terrible" anywhere

Not here, on Yankee boards and stuff...I don't post at any I just look at them every once in a while to see things from their perspective.

Exactly, I mean really what the hell does an 8 year old know about the Yankees? Why would he hate the Yankees? They probably can't remember the last time the Yankees won a championship, meanwhile their team just won one last year. So where does that anomisity come from? I think this is more about the parents than the kids IMO

oh in that case, please tell them to stop being morons about it. It's obviously just another case of over-involved parenting. you can quote me on this: "stp acting like prissies aobut something so stupid"

they should.....little league teams in new england have plenty of major league teams to choose from so their is no reason to even use the yankees.

I agree. I would have HATED playing for the Red Sox when I played little league (I actually played for the Mets  )

I mean, I understand it. Standard Little League is for 12 year old kids, and I can certainly understand a 12 year old Red Sox fan not wanting to play for a team called the Yankees. I think it's cool what the Spinners are doing and all, but I dont think it was their place. But hey, like someone said earlier it's a great marketing ploy for the club, and there's no denying that.

If a town primarily thinks of themselves as NY metropolitan they are welcome to name their teams after NY teams. Who cares? The nicknames should be fun and positive, not names that kids will dislike. I'm sure kids wouldn't be thrilled about playing Pee Wee basketball for the Lakers, or hockey for the Habs, or football for the -- I dunno, Jets, I guess. It's just common sense.

Heh, I wouldn't mind playing for the Giants if I were a 10-year-old little leaguer... as long as I could tank the games. ;)

Yeah it is kinda murder to play for a team you hate, because if you ever get that game-winning hir then it is always brought fown by the fact you payed for the Yanks, especually if it's against the Sox. I know it sounds stupid to you guys, but for a 12 yr old kid it can be a big deal.

Last year we were the Astros, and we went into the playoffs with the worst record. So in the first round of the playoffs we had to play the best team and it was the Yankees beause they went 14-2. We owned them. The fact that it was the Yanks made it sweeter too.
