he's already set with the power I believe, debut season to have 14 Hrs/62 RBIs is very good considering who he is playing for and in the tightrope American League. Stiil just 16 Walks in 132 games is something that needs more work. Besides HRs, what makes a great power hitter is that he can get on base alot even without hitting the ball.

He's essentially Jose Reyes minus speed/defense plus HR.

plus average and slg and power and he stays healthy. You know what, I think I have more in common with Cano that Reyes does and I havent played competetive ball in 3 yrs. GOOD ANALOGY!!!!!

Why do you keep talking about power for Cano? Power is not what your team needs, especially from a young second baseman. Why do you think Steinbrenner gave huge contracts to guys like Giambi, Sheffield and Matsui? Not to mention A-Rod. Cano hitting for power does nothing for his team, and if he sacrifices his walks and plate discipline for power, the team will suffer.

Lol, you hit 5 HR at the MLB level? I don't think so. He has a slight average on power from last season, but Reyes has hit near .300 before. I'll take the speed + glove over the power+???

I don't think Loretta or Cano are going to be our lefty in the bullpen.

Back on topic, theres a good chance we don't have a left in our pen this year. I like Dinardo, but if he makes the team it won't be because hes a lefty. He's not a guy whose any better against lefties than he is righties. He'll be a long reliever if he makes the team. You don't judge a long reliever by how he pitches against lefties.

He's definately good enough to be a long reliever on a major league team. The problem is we have 7 starting pitchers along with Foulke, Timlin, Seanez, Tavarez, Riske, and possibly Hansen. The only guy that Dinardo is ahead of is Hansen, and thats only because of severly limited experience for Hansen. Most people expect Hansen to be called up at some point.

I don't know but DiNardo really does remind of Arooyo when he was coming up and in no way is that bad. I see him sticking around as long as he doens't get hammered, however I think Riske can take on lefties

Riske is not the type of guy you bring in to get a tough lefty out though. He could get the lefty out, dont get me wrong, but in the 8th inning with Giambi at the plate and 2 men on in a tie ball game, do you bring in David Riske or would you rather have a lefty to bring in seeing as Giambi is much worse against lefties?

Rise held a .213 avg against lefties this past season, career .205 overall... Yes we do have DiNardo but he bodes a .296 batting avg against lefties. In that case I would chose Riske over DiNardo.

I understand your point, but the yankees tried that the past few yrs and it blew up. The righty gets the average lefties out, but the high profile, stud lefties will handle the righty with high frequency. Trust me, I watched Papi crush many relievers who were right handed but got lefties out. It is better to have a lefty in those late game situations....

its better to have lefties that can pitch to more than 1 batter. something myers is not good at.

Although I'd like to have a lefty who can throw an inning or two ... I'd rather have a lefty who I knew could get 1, or 2 lefties out almost every time. I'll take quality over quantity with a lefty reliever.

I agree, with bullpens that have 6-7 pitchers you can afford to use a couple of them for 1-batter matchups.

we have both, that is why the villone trade was good. he can be a 7th inning setup man until Dotel gets back and he can get righties and lefties out at the same time. His seattle numbers last yr were great, but he tanked in florida, so I hope he can get the magic back. He is a hard throwing lefty who gets a lot of K's, but his control is not ideal for a reliever....

So, last year, he was in one the game's best pitcher's parks and still sucked? And now you're expecting him to get lefties out in Yankee Stadium with that short porch in right?

Hmm...

he was in seattle in the AL in a smaller park and was nasty, sub 3era nasty, then he just plain sucked after the trade. I dont know what we'll get out of him, but he is a lefty arm with a history of success in the AL. He can also spot start and long relieve, which I like, because it gives us flexibility....

career era of 4.75.....hardly someone i would call a successful pitcher

last 3 yrs as a reliever

11-9 3.52ERA 128IP 101H 122K 68BB .654 lefty opp OPS.

Not too shabby....

i doubt he will repeat those numbers while being thrusted into a pressure environment and in a real pennant race. he is an average to below average reliever over his career. hes not someone who scares anyone when he is on the mound.

He's far from a Embree a la 2004 type, but I think he was a good pickup by the Yanks. He's been around the league, but he's nowhere near as bad as the Sox lefty pickup, Mike "I'm easier to score on than a Thai hooker" Remlinger.

EDIT: Hell, half this board wanted him last year when the 'pen was in flames.

Oh, the Mike Remlinger days, how I remember them. The 8-run innings. The screaming at the T.V. Good times, good times.

Or how about the Detroit Tigers game in the 10th inning where we saw the Sox just rip out 7 runs to take the 10-3 lead? Tito think this is perfect time to bring out the bomb in Remlinger. What does he do? He gives up a grand slam with teh final score being closer than it shouldve been, 10-7
