Red Sox to acquire Reed. (1/15)

According to our friends from the Seattle Sun Times, the Red Sox and Mariners have agreed to a trade that will send CF Jeremy Reed and a prospect to Boston in exchange for RHP Guillermo Mota, Bronson Arroyo, and AA southpaw Randy Beam. The prospect going East should be announced tomorrow, when the deal is released to the press. More info to follow...

above the reed deal

The Big Apple could be buzzing on Monday morning, with wind of huge trade involving both teams from the City that Never Sleeps. The Mets are close to bringing in slugger Gary Sheffield. In return the Yanks would receive RHP Kris Benson and coveted prospect Lastings Milledge. The only thing stopping from the trade is Gary Sheffield waiving his no-trade clause. Since it was growing ever more apparent that the Mets were not going to acquire Manny Ramirez from Boston, Omar Minaya decided to pull the trigger on this deal. We will present more information as it is made available.

how legit is that site anyway? Both these deals haven't been talked about ever.

I think were giving up to much in the reed deal. Id only be willing to give up either mota or arroyo, not both.

Using this website as a source is kinda shaky I think. I'll wait for a major reliable site to pick it up, thank you very much.

I'd happily give up two average-to-decent players to fill a hole with a young guy who can give excellent glove-work and still has a lot of ceiling at the plate. His K/BB rate declined from his MiLB numbers in his debut season, which is why his BA and OBP were below expectations, but who's doesn't? Given time he'll improve as he gets used to MLB pitching. If Seattle is willing to part with him after a poor offensive year as a rookie, then that is their mistake. Mota is redundant with the Seanez and Tavarez signings, and Arroyo pretty much defines league average pitcher (100 ERA+).

I'm skeptical of this deal because I don't know how reputable the site is, but I like it if it is true. It fills a need without costing the future or creating another one. SP/RP are two areas of depth, so give what you have to get what you need. I'll be interested to see who the prospect is.

Both sides of this deal have good pieces in place.

If Guillermo Mota is able to return to LA Dodgers form he would be huge for Seattle or Boston. I think his chances of that are better in Seattle with a pitchers ballpark. I also feel Bronson Arroyo would be a much better pitcher in Seattle considering he can keep the ball in the park.

On the other side...Fenway Park makes everyone a better hitter so that helps Jeremy Reed a ton. A guy who has excellent gap power and speed would be sure to have a better batting season in Boston. He would also bring great defense at CF which we could use. It would be nice to have a player with a strong arm next season.

As for that Yankee-Mets trade....what would the Mets be thinking? Giving up a young potential all star for 40+ year old Gary Sheffield. I could see them making the trade if the Yanks included a starting pitcher for the Mets. Possibly Carl Pavano and Gary Sheffield going for Milledge and Benson. Obviously the Yanks would be picking up a lot of money on that deal.

On the Reed deal, I like it. We really need a center fielder and I like Reed. I've said a few times I like Crisp better, but that doesn't mean i don't like Reed. His minor league numbers were really good and haven't translated to major league success at the plate yet but I'm optomistic he can improve.

I would hate to see the yankees get Milledge, but I find it hard to believe they'd trade sheffield. This would absolutely be a downgrade this year. Doesn't seem like a Yankee type deal. I hope its not true.

I'm skeptical on the validity of this site.

This is a strange website.

Today it says the trade is on hold because the teams can't come to an agreement on the prospect involved. It also says that Yanks deal is dead because Sheffield won't waive his no trade clause.

Oh and get this....they say Manny Ramirez will be on the Angels before spring training.

Apparently the Mets are hot after Julio Lugo and a trade of Xavier Nady and Kaz Matsui will take care of it?? If they wanted more than Andy Marte in our potential three-way deal with the Braves...how does this make sense?

If this is legit I think it is a good trade for both sides. Boston needs a young Center Fielder who could play there for years to come, and Seattle would be filling holes that need to be filled. I also wouldnt mind the Sox including Mota in the deal, because as I said in another thread, the additions to the Boston bullpen this offseason could potentially give Boston an AMAZING bullpen, and subtracting one of those additions would reduce the chances of that.

How ironic would it be if the prospect sent over from Seattle was Michael Garciaparra

...also, regarding the Sheffield for Benson/Milledge deal they were reporting, according to a source that deal was never proposed, discussed, or anything like that. So somebody from that site made it up, which could possibly the same scenario regarding the Reed trade.

but we will know soon enough I suppose as both are supposed to be announced tomorrow.

but for the record, I have expressed many times on this site my stance on trading Sheffield, how I am against it because he is the heart of the power portion of our lineup...but if we were to get Milledge in the deal I would pull the trigger in a second. Then we could spin Benson (or one of our other many pitchers) off onto someone else for an outfielder to replace Sheffield for this year until Milledge is ready.

Sheffield would not go unless he gets a new contract.

Red sox Creep ever closer to signing SS Gonzalez(1/16)

The Boston Redsox, according to our sources, are nearly done completing a 3 year deal worth around 2.45 million dollars per year with free-agent SS Alex Gonzalez, formerly of the Florida Marlins

there's no such paper as the Seattle Sun Times, there's the Seattle Times, but not the Seattle Sun Times.

Hahaha, they must have just read that, because I looked on the site right now and it now says the Seattle Times.

an update on the "Reed trade"

**Reed Deal to be finalized Tuesday(1/16)**

As we reported before the Sox and M's couldn't quite hammer out the details in the deal involving Jeremy Reed, but that seems to be all behind them as they expect to formally announce the deal on Tuesday.

If it is true, Im surprised this is the only site that's getting this good dirt

Either this guy that runs the site knows what he is talking about, or is really just having fun with everyone.

I wrote him an email asking questions about the Reed trade. He replied "it will be announced officially around noon." Im still skeptical and not getting my hopes up.

What a big surprise, it just so happens it fell through!

Red Sox drop out of Reed deal, Now eyeing Phillies Michaels (1/17)

Late last night my Philadelphia Phillies source indicated that we were indeed wrong about how close the Jeremy Reed to Boston trade really was. It turns out my contacts in Seattle were also very wrong. The deal was discussed, but we jumped the gun in posting it. For that, we are truly sorry. It seems that the Sox still have a keen eye on Reed, and something could get put together, but at this time, the number one CF on Boston's list is Phillies OF Jason Michaels. The Sox have proposed a David Wells for Michaels and a prospect swap, although it is abundently clear that Wells' desire is to play out west. The Phillies are then believed to possibly use Wells to and him partner with Mike Lieberthal in a trade to LA (Dodgers). The Phillies, despite contradicting reports, believe that Carlos Ruiz is ready for the big show, and could platoon effectivly with Sal Fasano. We will keep everyone updated throughout the day.

Yeah, tehres no way theyd be this close and not be any word of it on any major site with MORE CREDIBLE sources. 5 bucks says theres a new issue by tomorow.

In all fairness some trades DO come out of nowhere. Josh Beckett was going to Texas right up until the Red Sox snagged him up.

That having been said, they seem too wishy washy on their trades and I never really trust a paper (even if it's ESPN or whatever) when they say "an insider," or "a person close to negociations."

Jeremy Reed and a prospect for Mota and Arroyo would be acceptable IMO if the prospect was pretty good. Again, I've mentioned that the Mariners have 2 shortstop prospects and I'd love it if the Sox could get their hands on Jose Lopez (who is younger and more advanced than Hanley Ramirez).

Over the last 3 years, Not surprisingly, Bronson Arroyo is 14-10 (34 games, 31 starts) with a 3.48 ERA away from Fenway Park. For a guy who doesn't get a lot of strikeouts, he will depend a lot on his defense and also his park plays a big factor. He was 10-9 with a 4.91 ERA (39 games, 30 starts) at Fenway in that span.

If Bronson put up his road-like numbers in 2006 for Seattle, he'd be better than ANY starter they had in 2005 (well, Felix Hernandez was very impressive but of any pitcher with 20 or more starts). Even with his 2005 numbers including Fenway, Bronson would be a #2 or #3 in Seattle.

I don't think Arroyo and Mota for Lopez and Reed is that far off base, and it seems to make sense for both clubs.

The Yankee/Met rumor though? Far fetched IMO to say the least. These teams don't have a big history of helping each other out and I seriously doubt George Steinbrenner would green light a trade where he traded one of his top hitters for a prospect and a pitcher who'd get LIT UP in the AL East (Benson).

And the hits keep on coming for this site trying to validate itself.

Branyan not signing with Philadelphia (1/17)

Once again we were sent false rumors this time coming from the Philadelphia Phillies. We were initially led to believe that Russ Branyan was going to sign a 1 year deal today, however Phillies GM Pat Gillick denied that report saying quote,"We're not looking at Russ at this point. We're looking at someone with a little more versatility than Branyan." We will definitley be more careful in sorting through the rumors we get. Sorry for the false information.

They have also posted on the site that the Cardinals are shopping Jim Edmonds around and the Sox are interested. If it's true, I'd be thrilled. Edmonds is 38, but a gold glover in CF and has a 35-100 stick. He would be a perfect 2 year solution until Ellsbury is ready. What do you guys think St. Louis would take in return?
Posted

Edmonds will be turning 36 this season and if the Cards arent Devil Rays-like in trade negotiations, yes i wouldnt mind this trade happening. I am guessing it would cost pitching if Boston is actually intent on calling them up about this.

**What if secnario**

He is former gold glove winner, course has pop in his bat, being a solid stop-gap until Ellisbury is ready. Just a brainstorm, but it would be cool to see him the at the top of the order. IMO he would be a force for opposing pitchers at Fenway with the career .362 batting avg he holds there.

1. Jim Edmonds cf

2. Mark Loretta 2b

3. David Ortiz dh

4. Manny Ramirez lf

5. Trot Nixon rf

6. Jason Varitek c

7. Mike Lowell 3b

8. Alex Cora ss

9. Kevin Youkilis 1b
