J.T. Snow: Close to Signing with the Red Sox

RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com

Update: Snow, who has been close to deciding on a team for about a week, is close to signing with the Red Sox, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation, the Boston Globe reports.

Recommendation: Snow, who bats from the left side, would work in a platoon with the right handed Kevin Youkilis at first base.

From what ive heard, the Sox are going to give Youk every chance is Spring Training to win the Job outright, so there is a chance that Snow will just be the back up

no complaints from me with Snow becoming more of a backup. Foulke if he can at the least keep the ball on the ground while doing a save opportunity, he will be backed up by a possible infield of: Lowell, Cora, Loretta and Snow behind him.

Thats what I call reliable "D"

I was suprised at Snow's OBP and slugging %. This guy can actually do some damage...he is perfect as a backup player. Not to mention he brings lots of experience and leadership. I complimented the signing before but now I'm very happy with it.

I think that Snow would be a goodbackup but you know Youk has never truly proved himself as a good hitter and if snow can hit better than Youkilis than let himplay first

ESPN is reporting that JT Snow has agreed to a 1 yr / $2M deal with the Sox, pending a physical.

Good news. Youk's backup/platoon mate is set. Now they need a CF and RH 4th OF.

While vacancies loom at shortstop and center field, the Red Sox can all but cross off first base as a spot of need.

Veteran first baseman J.T. Snow, one of the top defenders at his position, is undergoing a physical in Boston on Friday, and assuming there are no snafus, he will then sign a one-year, $2 million contract with the Red Sox.

good to hear, an actual Sox signing. A great one at that.

Snow will bring of course reliable "D", some pop in his bat still, and from what I hear a good clubhouse fit for Boston.

interesting from Gordon Edes

He is expected to share time at first base with Kevin Youkilis and another newcomer, Mike Lowell. Lowell and Youkilis are also expected to share third base."Depending on the amount of time he plays, he could get anywhere from 350 to 550 plate appearances,'' Horwits said. "His intention is to play a lot."

With Manny "likely" staying, I just think the opening day shortstop should be Alex Cora. He of course will be solid fielding the ground. That can also have the Sox front office saying bye-bye to Tampa bay asking for our farm inreturn for Lugo. Wouldnt it be great for Marte's 1st career HR happen against the D-Rays? :)

As for center field, I'd still like to see a Clement or Arroyo for Reed swap. A message of gudelines should be sent to Seattle to note that Marte, Lester, Papelbon and Hansen are all of limits. So dont bother asking for them. Murphy and Moss could be contenders during spring training to win the center field job as well.

Ive got the faith this year

i dont see how this could be a bad signing. 1 year at 2 million with no incentives.

he has a career .269 AVG-----.358 OBP-----.428 SLG-----.788 OPS

SCOUTING REPORT

After injury-plagued seasons from 2001-03 and a drastic drop in production, he began hitting like the old Snow. He was spraying balls to all fields and regained his power. Although his homer total was just 12, it nearly equaled his output in the previous two seasons combined. He had a breakout game on August 13 in Philadelphia, hitting three home runs for the first time in his career. Snow hit nine of his homers in the second half, when he batted .387. Only Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki (.429) had a higher batting average after the All-Star break.

Snow hasn't won a Gold Glove since 2000, but that's not to say his defense has eroded. He continues to make spectacular plays seem routine. He hurt his knee at Wrigley Field making a diving catch just short of the bullpen mound, one of the best plays of the season. But as good as Snow is on defense, his lack of speed can sometimes be a drawback. This is not to insinuate that Snow is a bad baserunner. He doesn't make bonehead moves. He's just slow.

youkillis and snow at first...I doubt anyone will be shaking in their boots..

whats that about 10 homers and 40 rbi's for the year cpombined, not exctly the kind of numbers I want too see out of first base, we had that in fat ass.

Youkilis appeared in 72 games in 2004, compiling 7 Hrs and 40 RBIs. Analyst reports I have read, have him at 13-18 Hrs in his debut full season with 70+ RBIs. Mr. Negativity why dont you wait until the season actually starts, to "prove" us wrong?

IMO J.T. Snow is the best defensive 1st baseman in baseball currently, which is probably what his role will eventually become for the late innings. If you dont want his glove out there in the late innings, thats the funniest thing ive heard yet

having youkilis and snow playing at first is a major upgrade than what we saw with millar who was pathetic last year. i don't see alot of teams banging on millar's door to sign him. the sox definitely upgraded at first base. now we just need to fill centerfield and shortstop.

If I see one more "It's snowing in Boston" type headline I will kill someone.

From http://gysnetwork.blogspot.com/, the guy collected a bunch of pun related headlines:

Expect Snow this Summer - Over the Monster, 1/6/6

Snow Blankets Hub - Fenway Nation, 1/6/6

Let it Snow - 12eight, 1/6/6

There Will Be Snow in Boston - Boston Blood Sox, 1/6/6

Snow in Boston - Firebrand of the AL, 1/6/6

Could there be Snow in Boston? - Fresno Bee, 1/3/6

Snow in Forecast for Sox? - Boston Globe, 1/1/6

A forecast of Snow for Sox, Fenway - Boston Herald, 12/31/5

It is one of the aspects of the current Red Sox teams about which there is a question mark. Maybe Youk breaks out and becomes a very effective full-time player, but there is not enough of a track record to confidently predict that he will. The problem with this Red Sox team is that it has so many questions and holes. Beyond the obvious holes in CF and SS, there is the uncertainty at 1B, uncertainty whether Lowell and Foulke can make comebacks, and the lack of an established lefty out of the bullpen. When a team has so many questions and holes, it doesn't bode well. The more holes and questions the greater the chance that some of them do not have a positive resolution.

how about if we stop moping around, "theres so many holes", "theres no hope for us", "theres too many question marks".

Whatever will happen, will happen. Thats what baseball is, you never know what you're gonna get. Losing optimism and faith is not the way to go. There's what, like 3 months before the season's first pitch is thrown? Its one day at a time here, ok? Not, "why are we even talking about this season?"

I'm not moping. I am just realistically assessing this roster. I will root and hope with just as much enthusiasm as I have every other year. I'm just saying that in my estimation, this roster is not shaping up very well. Hopefully, the holes will be filled with capable players. That would certainly improve the outlook for this team.

Good signing for the Sox give some nice veteran presence at first base. He can help Youklis along and will serve as a really nice backup at first.

now we are hiring guys to help along our so called starters-sheesh.we have another guy snow to go with lowell coming off sub par years, we have holes that needed to be filled and this just doesnt seem to me to be much of a sigining..so he plays an inning or two every other game.

I just dont see how we can be so excited about youkillis, as being our everyday first baseman.

Becasue he didnt gripe being sent down so many times..come on.

Here's another headline:

Snow progress With this signing. or

Icy Reaction from me about Snow.

hmm Millar/Mienky combo did a decent job in 2004--Snow will give more offense than Mienky did and will give better defense than he had done in the late innings he was called on for.

The Sox FO are doing these moves in Loretta, Lowell, getting rid of Renterria, adding Snow... adding veteran solid D players, a 9 gold glove infield. Alex Cora seems the likely choice to be shortstop, no complaints from me. They got the defense, as it stands still have the 1-2 punch of Ortiz and Manny and others to contribute, now it really lies on the pitching staff's shoulders.

Posted
I just won't argue with 6 gold gloves in our defensive replacement/veteran 1b option. I imagine Snow has plenty of experience with things like, moving runners over, sac flies and bunts etc., but I can't be sure... I like experienced guys who are not going to collapse under pressure.
