Pentigne(spell check) did, plus Cabrera said that he would like to test hisself in the majors ... :dunno:

Petagine wasnt as good as Cabrera over in Japan. Cabrera (tied with Tuffy Rhodes and Sadaharu Oh) is the single season Home RUn champion over there. This guy is the NPB equal of someone like Pujols or A-Rod. He would not come back on a non-guaranteed contract.

This is who I'd give a minor league contract to ..

Alex Cabrera - 1B

Whoa, can you imagine this lineup?

1-Loretta

2-Crisp

3-Manny

4-Ortiz

5-Alex Cabrera

6- Juan Gonzalez

7-Varitek

8-Mike Lowell

9- Agon

^!!WOW!!

Wow. Replace trot with juan gonzalez, and youkilis with Alex Cabrera. Who IS Alex Cabrera? Japanese leagues, right? I've heard of him, but don't know much other than that he played for the D-Backs in 2000 and then went to Japan. I can't help but imagine how many times Papi(?) would get pitched around to get to Alex Cabrera and Juan Goninjured.

Wow(speechless). Not replace Trot with Juan Gone, Juan Gone would play vs lefties( .290+ vs lefties .... .450+ avg at Fenway )., Youk would be lucky to be as good a hitter as Cabrera ... ummm, yeah .. lol

i'll look for stats now. But basic background on Cabrera is he came up with the Diamondbacks, bombed, went to Japan (Seibu Lions), became a MEGA STAR, made tons of money, made a huge name for himself, etc. He's from Venezuela, and played for the Caracas Lions in the Carribbean Seires earlier in the month. There were rumors at one point that George Steinbrenner was going to make a HUGE effort to bring him to the Bronx, however I havent heard anything about that in like a year.

Off to find stats for you.

I don't feel like this argument requires one to delve into the stats of Juan Gone the past 3 years, or mention the fact that he seems like the perfect candidate to have utilized the atheletes "little helpers" that have been so in the headlines this past year. I imagine that if we signed him to a MiLB deal he wouldn't end up playing much for the sox. If Petegine didn't play much Juan Gonzo wouldn't play much. I just don't see the Sox FO spending more than 2 seconds signing this guy when they could get much more creative and find someone who could actually help the team and who is young and cheap.

He has played a in a total of 186 Games from the 2002 season to the present. I'll say that again: 186 games in 4 seasons. 34 in the past two seasons. That's not good at all dude.

Ken Griffey Jr. has played in 201 Games in the past 2 years, and had more AB's last year than Juan has had COMBINED over the past 3 years.

I think you should let the Juan idea rest. Cabrera? Whatever, that's fine I guess. But I don't want that busted old dude sitting down at Pawtucket taking up bench space. Unless he can raise his .328 OBP over the past 3 seasons (455 AB's) then the Sox will never go for it.

The Sox won't ever sign Juan Gonzalez, I'm familiar with the whole low risk high reward thing, but Juan Gone is exactly that, long gone. His best days are over and I'd rather give a guy like Mohr or Hidalgo a chance to be the guy to spell trot against lefties.

Why sign a guy just to have him on the roster? Juan Gonzalez used to be a big name, sure, but so did Ashton Kutcher why don't we sign him? He can't play baseball either.

I was very impressed with Hidalgo when he was here with the Mets. Last year he was horrible. I guess he's just one of those unpredictables. Definately a very good signing if he comes on a minor league deal.

It's hard for me to comprehend how he was good in Shea and terrible in Ameriquest.:dunno:

haha yea really. I never thought about it like that. IDK though, but he was definately someone I was VERY pleased with when he was here.

I know very little about this Alex Cabrera guy, but from what I've heard he seems like a prick.

For a guy who's proven NOTHING at the major league level, he won't come over without a guaranteed contract?

He also apparenltly said he wouldn't play in the WBC unless he was guaranteed a starting spot.

The Cubs are looking at free agent Juan Gonzalez, who also says the White Sox and Red Sox are interested in his services.

Yeah, everyone is interested. That's why it's February 21 and he's still unsigned. All three teams would probably only have him play against lefties initially. If the Cubs, who are currently watching him work out in Puerto Rico, decide to sign him, he might bump Marquis Grissom off the team. Feb. 21 - 2:02 pm et

Not much but if they do sign him I expect apologies from those of you that called me a moron ... lol :::cough ksushi cough:::

the red sox have interest in many names but that doesn't mean they will sign any of them. i highly doubt they will bring in a washed up juan gonzalez who should just retire.

For the first 18 games of the season, the Sox will have to carry Adam Stern on the roster. Though I personally dont see whats the big deal if they have to give Stern back to the Braves. With depth of pitching we have, I dont see them carrying a 5th outfielder. Mohr will probably make his Sox debut in late April. According to Gordon Edes, Kapler cant return to team until May 15, even then he might not be 100%

Are you kidding me? You don't see the big deal of returning Stern just 18 games prior to him falling under the Sox control? They jumped through hoops to keep this kid on the roster last year, and you want them to return him that close to the deadline so that they can have 12 pitchers for the first three weeks of the season. That's crazy talk man. If a starter doesn't get traded in ST, I say send Papelbon to AAA for that time frame and let him get a couple of starts in so he doesn't collect dust in the 'pen. That way they get to take a look at him starting this year, while keeping someone they went to lengths to try and keep.

I have to agree with Riverside. What is the point in keeping Stern? He's never going to see any PT for the Sox, and he likely wont bring back any value in a trade ... so whats the point? I guess I can understand keeping him around for 17 more games, but we should have never even got that far with him.

I didn't agree with us jumping through hoops to keep him last year either just for the record.

The value? He'll likely never start, especially given the fact that they have Crisp and several promising young OF on the farm, but he could develop into a tradeable commodity. Or at the very least injury insurance down on the farm.

I agree that keeping him all of last year was a bit of waste, but that isn't the essence of my argument. If they were willing to play with a 24-man roster (which is what they pretty much did - that and the "injury" shuffling with him are the jumping through hoops) for most of a playoff year, then it makes no sense to go through that sacrafice and get this close to the end, then just give him back. If they gave him back now, it would become the textbook definition of bumbling. Not because Stern is worth anything, but because they sacraficed a good part of a season to keep him.
