The deal is contingent on a physical, which Glaus is expected to take Monday in Toronto. A press conference is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday.

In return for Glaus, the Diamondbacks will receive second baseman Orlando Hudson and right-hander Miguel Batista. Along with Glaus, the Jays will get Class AAA shortstop Sergio Santos to the Jays, according to the East Valley Tribune.

Wow, great move by the blue jays. Dealing pitching depth and defense away for a .250 hitter who strikes out a lot and plays mediocre defense.

Jeez, no wonder teams employ these ivy league grads to do all this thinking, you'd think common sense would tell you that when hitting goes on the cheap and pitching and defense become expensive paying through the nose for hitting really isn't worth it. What do I know.

I guess these Ivy Leaugers have things pretty wrapped up.

Don't like giving up O-Dog, he's an underrated player. If Glaus is healthy he'll be good, but I think Toronto could have gotten a better player for that package.

Anybody know anything about the prospect coming back to the Jays?

To be honest, I'm perfectly happy with the Youth Movement in Boston, deeping the pitching staff and getting younger is exactly what this club needs. There's no need to mimmic the Yankees policy of writing checks and dealing the farm, because we can't compete like that, this however is a club that will raise eyebrows in 2006. Let's just hope all the pieces start falling into place...

Anyway, Toronto is going to have to make a number of moves with their surplus of corner infielders. I can see Glaus starting at 3B, Hillenbrand at 1B after the year he just had, Overbay DH maybe, and then Koskie and Hinske possibly getting moved or maybe they'll willingly take a seat on the bench.

He wasn't touted a whole lot but I heard his name tossed around here and there (kinda like on the doorstep to being a highly touted guy...at least by the local medias standards). If the D'Backs didn't have Clayton, he probably (just my guess...) would have gotten some playing time at Short behind Alex Cintron (who was the incumbent SS when Clayton came).

Ksushi if you got something to say hen say it here, don't be a pussy and do it by PM.

This is obviously just one source, but in it Sergio Santos is being compared to Gary Sheffield (and not in the bad attitude kind of way)

http://diamondbacks.scout.com/2/333772.html

He was very mediocre at AAA last season though. Baseball America stats below, I'll highlight some important ones:

AVG: .239, OBP: .288, SLG: .367. He also K'd 108 times and only walked 34 times. Granted, he's just 21 years old so he has some time to grow, but he looked like he was overmatched last year in AAA.

This deal makes a lot of sense for the Diamondbacks. They had a glut of corner infielders and wanted to move Chad Tracy back to third, and in the process rid themselves of Glaus' big contract, and they traded a shortstop prospect who's obviously blocked by Stephen Drew (rated their #1 by Baseball America), and in the process picked up a gold glove caliber second baseman who's only 27 and an average reliever/starter in Miguel Batista.

This deal makes (IMO) absolutely no sense to the Blue Jays. Granted, now they can play both Russ Adams and Aaron Hill, both shortstops by trade, but if I were them I would have added pitching rather than subtracted it. Batista would have served them well as a setup man or back of the rotation starter.

To their credit, Glaus is a better offensive player than any of their current third baseman (Hillenbrand, Koskie, Hinske), but with a full outfield, and Lyle Overbay most likely their full time first baseman, TWO of these guys who consider themselves everyday players are now out of a job. (assuming one of them or Glaus become DH)

Toronto has got to turn around and make meaningful deals for 2 of the abovementioned 3 third baseman for this deal to make sense.

Meanwhile, I am dissapointed that the Sox didn't pick up a bat like Glaus, but it's probably for the best considering it cost the Blue Jays 2 very good players AND Arizona didn't have to eat any of the contract.

It doesn't seem like it makes any sense without a subsequent deal lined up for hillenbrand or koskie or hinske. What are those guys worth though? Does Hillenbrand have more trade value or more value to the jays by keeping him? I'm not sure any of these three guys are going to bring back anything greater in value to their pitching staff than miguel batista, especially since there is such a large gap between the price of hitting and pitching right now. I think they really messed up on this one. Hitting is not going to be the key to the AL east, its going to be pitching and defense, two things that they traded away for a beat up, likes to strike out a lot, poor average hitter in glaus. I don't understand how this improves them at all.

I don't like Glaus, and yes I've said this all along, I'm not flip flopping. The guy won't improve the jays at all, and he would have done more for the sox, but not a whole lot either. He is vastly overrated. Their lineup is still the second worst in the division infront of only baltimore and they've downgraded on pitching depth. I know I am repeating myself, but christ, someone should repeat this. This is a bad move.

What would be interesting is if they had someone willing to over pay for corner infield talent. A team that might make a cute little push to contend this year, like the pirates. They missed out on two FA's who they wanted to bring in in Mueller and Nomar. They might be willing to deal away a couple of arms for a Hillenbrand or even better to them, A Corey Koskie. He would bring a veteran presence and some nice glove work over there. That might be something that could get worked out. I think then I could give them a little credit here even though Glaus is a stiff. He is at least alittle bit better of a hitter than anyone else they might have right now. Unless Vernon Wells does something like he did in 04.

I think Riccardi made a bad move, hes probably the next Paul Depodesta and hes trying to hard to be Omar Minaya. Not that Omar Minaya is going to have a job in four years.

todays toronto star says no agreement has been made yet, but the blue jays are still working on getting glaus

even though the paper said nothing is done yet, MLB.com says glaus took his physical today and will be announced Tuesday.

PHOENIX -- The Blue Jays and Diamondbacks are expected to announce on Tuesday that they've completed a deal that would send third baseman Troy Glaus and prospect Sergio Santos to Toronto and pitcher Miguel Batista and second baseman Orlando Hudson to Arizona.

The two teams reached an agreement on the deal last Thursday, but the holiday weekend delayed the medical clearance part of the transaction. Glaus was in Toronto on Monday for his physical and is expected to remain there overnight for a press conference on Tuesday.

In Glaus, the Blue Jays are getting a powerful bat. The 29-year-old, who signed a four-year, $45 million contract prior to last season, hit 37 homers and drove in 97 runs despite being dogged throughout the year with a strained tendon behind his left knee. He took three cortisone shots to help alleviate the problem, but Arizona team physician Michael Lee said at the time that only 4-6 weeks of rest would help.

With the Diamondbacks in the hunt for the top spot in the National League West, Glaus continued to play throughout the season before resting the knee in October. When the Diamondbacks signed Glaus, there was some concern about his right shoulder. A partial tear in his rotator cuff limited his playing time in 2003 and 2004, but did not cause any problems for him in 2005.

The 37 homers was the second highest among big league third baseman last year behind only Alex Rodriguez, who hit 48. It marked the fourth time in his career that he's hit 30 or more homers.

The Diamondbacks had recently looked to deal Glaus to help alleviate a logjam at the corner infield and outfield positions. With Glaus' departure, Chad Tracy is expected to move back to third base with Shawn Green returning to right field. That opens up a spot for Conor Jackson, one of the club's top prospects, at first base.

Hudson won a Gold Glove last year, leading American League second sackers in range factor (5.84) and fielding percentage (.991). The 28-year-old hit .271 with 25 doubles, five triples, 10 homers and 63 RBIs. He was expendable thanks to the presence of Aaron Hill.

With the money saved in the deal -- Hudson made $365,000 last year and is salary arbitration eligible while Batista will make $4.75 million in the final year of his deal -- the Diamondbacks have the flexibility to add some salary if they choose, either by signing a free agent or via a trade.

Craig Counsell will move to shortstop to start the season and gives Arizona a valuable trading chip in infielder Alex Cintron, who could be dealt to help the team fill its hole in center field or add depth to its pitching staff. Counsell would likely move to a super utility role when top prospect Stephen Drew is deemed ready to play in the Majors.

Batista is no stranger to the Diamondbacks, having played for them from 2001 through 2003 before signing as a free agent with the Jays. The versatile right-hander spent time both as a starter and reliever during his stint in the desert and originally was a starter in Toronto before becoming the club's closer last year.

The 34-year-old saved 31 games for Toronto last year in 39 opportunities. It was a tale of two halves for him as he converted 15 of his first 17 chances and had a 2.97 ERA in the first half and converted just 16 of 22 in the second half with a 5.35 ERA. His best season in Arizona came in 2001, when he was 11-8 with a 3.36 ERA for the World Series champs.

With Jose Valverde entrenched as the club's closer, the Diamondbacks will use Batista as a starter. He joins a rotation that also includes newly acquired Orlando Hernandez, plus holdovers Brandon Webb and Brad Halsey.

Santos, who just two years ago was ranked by Baseball America as the organization's top prospect, was drafted out of high school by the Diamondbacks with their first pick in the 2002 draft. The 22-year-old had a steady rise through the system before stumbling a bit last year for Triple-A Tucson when he hit just .239 with 12 homers and 68 RBIs.

At 6-foot-2, 239 pounds, Santos is big for a shortstop, which has prompted speculation that he would eventually need to switch, but the Diamondbacks have been impressed with the way he's played at short. He became expendable, however, when the club drafted shortstops with its first-round pick in each of the past two drafts. Drew, selected in 2004, is thought to be just about ready for the big leagues and the team drafted high school shortstop Justin Upton with the No. 1 overall pick last year. Upton has yet to sign, but the D-Backs are optimistic that they will reach a deal with him.

In other confusing news, Larry Walker may not retire afterall and could try and interest teams in him being a DH for an AL team. The Toronto Blue Jays are said to be keeping tabs to try and acquire him. Okk so I guess if they were to do this it, Walker as the new DH, Glaus would stay at 3rd base being error happy in the Rogers Centre, causing even more influx of their corner infielders.

great move by the Jays. Giving up a mediocore at best IF, and an inconsistent guy for a 40HR dude. I can't see how anyone can be slamming this deal at all. Great Great move by the Jays

yeaa but Glaus will give them a Renterria season no doubt, and their core of pitchers are known to be the "groundball type"

How is Hudson mediocre by the way?

Orlando Hudson and Miguel Batista are expected to go the other way, with the Jays likely getting a prospect in return. Rosenthal says that Glaus will waive his no-trade clause and stay at third base for the Jays. If so, they're not getting much, if any, better with the trade. Between subtracting perhaps the game's best defensive second baseman and going from Corey Koskie to the well below average Glaus at third base, what the team gains on offense, it loses on defense.

Why would you think that of Glaus? The guy came from the AL where outside of his rookie and 2 injury plagued years, he averaged 35+ HR per season.

Orlando Hudson's last 3 seasons BA/RBI/Runs/OBP

2003 - .268/57/54/.328

2004 - .270/58/73/.341

2005 - .271/63/62/.315

If that isnt mediocrity...

I don't understand the Blue Jays plans at all, theyre log-jammed at the corners, and now they want Walker as their potential DH, where are they going to put all these people, and where are they getting all this money, maybe the exchange rate is helping them.

Rotoworld: At manager John Gibbons' urging, Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi has all but taken Shea Hillenbrand off the trade block, according to The Globe and Mail. The Jays' fascination with Hillenbrand continues. He has far more trade value than Eric Hinske or Corey Koskie and isn't very much better than either. With Troy Glaus playing third base and Lyle Overbay at first, the Jays don't even need two of the three. However, there's some thought that they could trade Frank Catalanotto and try Hillenbrand in left field.

Looks like they went through the troy glaus trade not knowing what to do next after doing so...
