zito still had 14 wins and a 3.86 ERA in a "down year." that's still pretty sick. I say that's the type of year we could expect from him with the possibility of an 02-type season. sooooooo worth it. and who really cares about that package. zito replaces arroyo. youkilis will probably just rot on the bench. alvarez ain't nothing. and delcarmen is a decent prospect to give up but a loss we can absorb especially after picking up van buren.

The only guy I'd think twice about dealing is Delcarmen, the rest are completely expendable. We've seen Arroyo, he's at besta #4 starter or setup man. Youkilis is decent but it's obvious that the Red Sox don't see him as an everyday player. Alvarez at his peak will probably not be as good as Zito.

Again, I'd love to have Delcarmen's power arm in Boston, and he could be ready to help now, so I'd love to hang on to Manny if possible, but the rest of those guys are totally expendable.

despite the fact that some believe Zito's declined because of his ERA the past few years, I don't think that's true. His K/9 and K:BB in 04 and 05 were both better than in his 2003 season. His 2002 season was his best by far but this dude is 27 and has a Cy Young award and 86 wins to his name. I agree with Youk-- get his ass here.

I'd hate to give up Delcarmen but this is Barry freakin' Zito were talking about.

I agree, he would be just as nice a pickup as Josh Beckett was. Adding a 25 year old with a World Series MVP and a 27 year old with a Cy Young would make this the best offseason in Red Sox history. That future rotation with two RHP in Papelbon and Beckett to go wtih two LHP in Lester and Zito would make us contenders every season based on the strength of our rotation.

If we could get something done I would suggest looking into solid defensive guys and prospects for Manny. We wouldn't necessarily need high offensive power but great defense and pitching. It would certainly be a nice direction to go in.

Getting rid of Delcarmen and Youk who i think will be big parts of the club next year doesnt make sense. And when "youk said 3.86 and 14 wins in a down year" that doesnt make sense either, 05 was his best year since 02. I think he has lost some of his stuff and shouldnt be brought here. Plus we have a Zito type in Lester for 07

You say that the sox think that Youk is not an everyday player. I disagree completely, going into the offseason i think The sox were content on having Youk Play third. But when the sox saw they had a chance for Beckett they obviously would take Lowell too. I still think the Sox should deal Lowell and put YOUK at 3rd

I think the American League figured out Barry Zito. His curveball, while the best in the game, is readable out of his hand, and it's slow enough for hitters to adjust. Other pitchers like Roy Oswalt who throw big curveballs are successful because they use them to complement great, hard fastballs, and hitters don't have time to sit curveball and adjust up to fastball. With Zito, who may have even lost velocity, hitters can wait for the big hook, and if he does indeed throw an 86 MPH fastball, which is nowhere near overpowering, hitters have time to fight it off. I am not saying Zito is a bad pitcher, but I am saying that he will never come closer to replicating his 2002 season than he did last season, and a 2005 Barry Zito is not worth that many players.

I think that isn't enough for Zito lol

The A's are in the perfect position they can demand what prospects they want from the red sox because if they don't get them they can walk away and there will a dozen other teams will to give up anything to get him. So if the sox have a shot at him it would most likely have to involve lester or papelbon so i dont see it happening. Trading zito isn't a salary dump for the A's its just trying to take advantage of the lack of good free agent pitchers out there and trying to get some players for him before he leaves in free agentcy.

Zito would be so nice, he's so talented if he had that bat that Johnson, Santana and Peavy needs, he's alot like them, he doesn't have the talented bats around him to win like others do. Lol, the Red Sox would be unstoppable if they had Santana.

I agree completely. From what I've read on FSN, the A's need offense. The latest deal that is rumored to be taking place by the end of this week possibly Zito for Bradley either straight up or a prospect or 2. The thinking is that with Esteban Loaiza, Zito is expendable in a free agent year. Their top need is OF help w/power. They like Bradley's age and talent, but are a little hesitant about his baggage and injury problems. But since he is in his walk year as well, its not too much of a risk for them either. Sorry Sox fans, but unless we get an extra bat from dealing Manny, then flipping him to Oakland, there is NO WAY we are getting Zito.

the only reason beane would take soriano is to turn around and trade him to another team that thinks he's gold, soriano is nothing but a crappy defensive 2b and an overrated hitter.

Any chance the sox can package a deal together that would send Zito to the Red Sox. With him, Schlliling at full health, and Beckett at full health, the red sox could have to most dominant rotation in all of Major League Baseball

I believe theres a thread about this in the "Rumor Mill." That's where you may want to post threads concerning rumors or ideas. But, that being said, no. There is no way. Billy Beane will want Papelbon or Lester or Hansen in return. Our rotation got easily better with Beckett. I would love to have Zito, I just don't see this happening.
