In another development that indirectly affects the Brewers, the New York Mets acquired first baseman Carlos Delgado from the salary-dumping Florida Marlins. The Mets were one of the teams expected to show interest this winter in acquiring Brewers first baseman Lyle Overbay.

Another club with interest in Overbay is Boston, which could have pitching to spare after acquiring Josh Beckett from the Marlins. One rumor circulating has the Red Sox offering right-hander Matt Clement to the Brewers for Overbay.

The Brewers took a run at Clement on the free agent market last winter before he signed with the Red Sox for three years and $25.5 million. Overbay made $446,000 last season and is in line for a big raise through salary arbitration, but the Brewers would have a bigger payroll bump in acquiring Clement, who went 13-6 with a 4.57 ERA in 32 games for Boston.

Melvin, who has said he would only trade Overbay in the right deal, did not indicate if he'd be interested in such a swap but noted the Red Sox might be after Chicago White Sox free agent first baseman Paul Konerko. After dealing for Philadelphia's Jim Thome, it is not known if Chicago will try to keep Konerko.

I would make this trade in a second now that we have 6 starting pitchers.

I'm not sure. I like having Bronson as a long reliever and making spot starts. I like this deal if the Red Sox feel Wade Miller can come back and contribute effectively as our #5 starter. Otherwise I would rather go after Adrian Gonzalez who is younger with more power and good defense.

It's a good deal for Boston. But Clement may come around this year in the second half. He pitched great in the first half of the year and if he can get his stuff together in the second half he will be dangerous.

Im wary of Wade Miller, this offseason surgery he will have, it will keep him out until May/June. I dont think the Sox would play the waiting game for him again. He's a big question mark

I strongly doubt they will. They took a flyer on him last year hoping that he'd be ready to go this year and he clearly wont be. I really like Wade Miller when he's healthy but we just can't wait for that to happen.

i really like overbay and we have an too many of everything;players , pitchers, and bullpen...i say we trade matt clement and youkilis for lyle overbay and geoff jenkins..this gives us a great OF, 25 homers and 86 RBIs batting .292 and a 1b that can get 15-20 HRs with 30+ doubles batting about .300 and jenkin's salary is the same thing as clement's

lineup

renteria-ss

overbay-1b

ortiz-dh

manny-LF-he'll be alrite come baseball season

jenkins-RF

lowell-3b

tek-C

nixon-CF

perodia-2b

pretty potent lineup

I like Youk, Arroyo, Clement and cash for Overbay and Sheets. lol. But seriously, nothing would surprise me this offseason.

I don't like that idea it's too big of a package for Overbay.

call me crazy, but I would actually prefer to get Adrian Gonzalez instead.

Thats not crazy....I agree with you. Adrian Gonzalez has huge upside on defense and offense. He has a real good bat and is only 23 years old. I would love to have Adrian and Youk split up some time at 1st and may the best man win.

There is no way if you're the Red Sox you can just expect to give up Youk, Clement, Arroyo and cash and bring back sheets and overbay. Sheets was just locked up in an extension and isn't going anywhere. They love him there. Overbay might be worth Clement and Youk, but I wouldn't pay for Clement to go.

I actually really like the Geoff Jenkins idea, but not as a starter in RF, because I also see no way Nixon can hack it in center. We need a 4th rh outfielder and jenkins fits the bill. If we needed to include a 2nd rate prospect along with Clement and Youk, I could see it happening. Perhaps brandon moss? who knows, all speculation. I see us with an outfield of Manny Damon and Nixon in 06, no changes there but I do think Overbay is a possibility. Others being Gonzalez and Huff and Konerko.

Huff's OBP has been on the decline the last three years and Gonzalez is relativley unproven. Konerko's 2003 was a Mike Lowell-esque drop off. He was revived in 04 and 05, but he hit 29 of his 41 homeruns in 04 in comiskey park, and although Fenway is no pitchers paradise, comiskey is especially cozy and when a guy doesn't hit on the road it worries me to take him out of his ball park. There are guys with swings meant for certain parks, Konerko could be one of those guys although i haven't seen his spray chart. In 04 and 05 comiskey or us cellular whatever its called was the home of the most homeruns in the majors, but then again, safeco is known as a pitchers paradise and it was second.

I guess I'm just not a trusting guy, that could be all for nothing, he is a very good hitter but I like Overbay in fenway more than Konerko because Overbay strokes a lot of doubles and Konerko doesn't. I love doubles guys in fenway.

id also rather have overbay over gonzalez because hes more proven. Overbay would probaly hit .285 18 hrs 80 rbis and 45 doubles. Hes also hasnt had any injury problems and is decent defensivly.

Scouting report from ESPN

Hitting

Overbay is a first baseman in the tradition of Mark Grace and Sean Casey-not a power hitter, but a man who can hit .305 with 45 doubles, while driving in and scoring 90 runs. In the absence of any available candidate who could hit for power, manager Ned Yost plugged him into the No. 4 slot early in 2004. Overbay responded with a big first half before coming back to earth after the All-Star break.

Baserunning & Defense

Defense is an important part of Overbay's game. In an infield that saw more than its share of shuffling last season, Overbay provided some stability. No Brewer second baseman had more than 41 double plays, but Overbay recorded 110. Possessed of average speed, he attempted only three stolen bases, but Overbay ran well enough to set the Brewers' team record for doubles.

Brewers get-- Clement, Shoppach, Arroyo,

RedSox get-- Chris Capuano (lefty from springfield MA) and overbay.

i still think the sox need a lefty in the rotation since Wells is most likely gone

I think that's a little too much to give up.

Posted
I don't think they need a lefty. There isn't really a need for a lefty in your rotation, but more in your bullpen. You build your rotation based on the talent of the pitchers, the 5 most talented pitchers on your roster fill out the rotation regardless of which hand they throw the ball with. I think capuano has a career ERA close to 5, I'm too lazy to look that up right now, but there are already 5 pitchers on this team more talented than he is.

I don't like the idea of Shoppach and Youk in with Clement. I think Clement and a prospect.

No way would they trade both Capuano and overbay for those three. There isn't much differenct between Clement and Capuano except Capuano is making the league minimum next year then becomes arbitration eligible for the next 3 while clement is making much more. Shoppach and Arroyo isn't a great package for overbay without Clement involved. Arroyos price tag is about to go up and destroy his value.

the proposed clement for overbay deal problay wont happen. espn says a front office guy said that "clement isnt dougs (doug melvin GM of the brewers) kind of guy". Maybe arroyo for overbay.
