the main reason LA didn't get the deal done even though they need help at both positions worse than the sox is they weren't willing to assume a larger portion of lowell's salary. i just hope last year was an off year for him because saying he tanked would be a severe understatement.

gammons reported on sportscenter, hanley, sanchez, and one more minor leaguer. Getting Beckett without giving up Lester is a great move. Beckett is only 25 and isn't eligible for free agency for two more years. All the free agent pitchers are older and seem like a bigger risk than Beckett.

i think we just stole 2 guys from the annual firesale that happens every year or every other year in miami. injuries aside for beckett i think he has great upside and this pretty much takes us out of the burnett sweepstakes. now we can focus on the manny issue.

Rangers won't get Beckett for Blalock

From staff reports

http://www.dfw.com/images/common/spacer.gif

The Rangers won’t be getting Josh Beckett after all.

According to Major League sources, the Florida Marlins have decided to trade the 25-year-old Beckett to the Boston Red Sox, reportedly for minor league prospects.

The Rangers and Marlins had agreed on the principals in a trade that would have brought Beckett and third baseman Mike Lowell to Arlington for third baseman Hank Blalock and one of the Rangers top minor league pitchers — presumably lefthander John Danks.

The Marlins, who are once again believed to be engaging in an austerity drive to significantly lower payroll, decided to accept the Red Sox offer, the source said.

The Rangers, who have expressed interest in A.J. Burnett, another Marlins starter who is a free agent, and St. Louis Cardinals free agent Matt Morris, in an effort to bolster the top of their rotation, were ready to sacrifice Blalock’s bat for Beckett. Beckett was 15-8 last season and a postseason hero in 2003 when he beat the Yankees in Game 6 at Yankee Stadium to clinch the World Series for the Marlins.

The hard-throwing Texan was the second overall pick by the Marlins in the 1999 amateur draft out of Spring High School. He has a career record of 41-34 with a 2.34 ERA in his career, striking out 607 in 609 innings.

Blalock, also 25, was an All-Star in 2003 and ’04, but fell off last season when his averaged dropped to .263 and he hit 25 home runs and drove in 92 runs.

Still, he is considered one of the best third basemen in either league and is signed through 2008 with an option for 2009, which makes him attractive trade bait.

Although Burnett would not cost the Rangers a player, the team is reportedly reluctant to give the righthander from Arkansas a five-year contract as a couple of teams have reportedly agreed to.

Burnett was 12-12 last season. That leaves the 31-year-old Morris as the other most attractive starting pitcher available. He was 14-10 with the Cardinals last season and would fill the void at the top of the rotation left when the Rangers decided not to re-sign Kenny Rogers.

It's on the bottom ticker on ESPN and ESPNEWS. It's definitly legit. This is absoloutly huge.

Schilling

J-Beck

Wells*

Clement

Wake/ Pap's/ Arroyo

That's a killer rotation no matter how you slcie it. And I'm assuming they move Lowell to first wich is easily and upgrade over Millar even with Lowells bad year last year.

Hell yeah, hell yeah, hell yeah!

Beckett should be a nice combination with Varitek and should learn about pitching from Schilling.

This is very exciting.

i am literally jumping up and down right now!!! :)

once this is all set and done, a big step in the right direction for 2006. If Beckett can stay healthy as well as Schilling, then i got good feelings for this rotation. A 3 game series with Beckett, Schilling and Papelbon pitching... who else is counting down the days for that

I'm counting riverside, I'm counting. Who the hell needs a GM?

It is hard to see Hanley leave... actually not as hard as I thought it would be. Anibel is probably harder to see go, but imagine a staff for the next 5-6 years of Papelbon, Beckett and Lester. With Hansen in the pen what a great staff that is.

I think this is a phenomenal pick-up. For all the injury talk about Beckett the guy has thrown progressively more innings each year, topping out at 172 or so this year. That's not too bad. He's also very young (25), so he's as old as Papelbon who still seems very young.

Will we have the ridiculuously unbalanced rotation of Schilling, Wells, Beckett, Wakefield, Papelbon? Talk about throwing a team off.

Its easier to see Hanley leave now than last year. The farm system has really come a long way. We still got Pedroia and Lowrie as prospects up the middle, and lester, pappelbon, hansen, bucholz, and delcarmen as young pitchers. Beckett is the kind of guy you move young guys for.

Yea pedroia is absolutely sick and i think we took advantage of the excessive press that hanley has been getting. I think he has not produced as much as he should have this year considering his expectations, and I am very excited to have Pedroia in the near future, i met the guy and got his autograph like 3 days before he was sent up to AAA, it was sick.

Yeah, the prospects that we have that have risen quickly (lester papelbon hansen delcarmen and pedroia) have shown poise and maturity all except Hanley. I'm not that worried about trading him but I was pretty high on Sanchez, but wasn't Sanchez suspended ealier in the year for substance abuse? Oh well hes a really good pitcher either way and I liked Hanley a lot but I'm ok with this deal. If lester went, that'd be a whole 'nother story, so im glad we avoided getting him sent off.

I think beckett is probably a lock for the DL at somepoint in the season but he'll put up a good ERA and get some wins. I think he'll keep the ERA under 4.00, maybe well below 4. He was my last years preseason pick for Cy Young, that didnt work out and I really do think he will get hurt at some point. That said, he will be a beast in the post season.

Oh yeah, lowell is a trooper too. Go lowell and big contract.

(EDIT - So i guess this means that wells is going to be sent packing? Eh ? Eh?)

If he stays the 5ht starter si up in the air. Personally I would put Papelbon back in the pen unless he comes up with another ptich but as of right now it's unknown.

Hopefully Beckett can pitch like he did against New York in 03. If healthy, his Fastball is like a billion miles an hour and his curve is very strong as well. Nice trade, I wasn't sure at first but I wasn't completely up to snuff on Hanley anyway. Lowell is nice as well and I believe last year was a fluke. Hes a much better baseball player than that.

This is excellent

Schill

BEck

Wake

Paps

Clement

Trade wells put arroyo in the pen

that would be a W.S rotation, maybe use lowel in trade or as a back up 3rd basemen

Oh no doubt when healty Beckett is a #1 starter. And personally I believe that most of his "injuries" were just the Marlins being total hypochondriacs trying to make sure he is always 100% healthy because they knew he was the future before all this stadium s*** came up.
