Milledge would be a good guy to get. So would Huff. Heilman would have to be our hope for a starter for the next few years. I think he's kind of a we-can't-get-Burnett kind of option. We don't need too many youngish starting pitchers. In 3 years I want at least three of the spots taken by Lester, Papelbon and Sanchez. We can look around for more from there, but we should leave some options open.

I appreciate that you realize that sometimes you go "out there". This is no exception. The chances of the sox getting travis hafner are very, very low. He's worth a lot. Manny has said he would go back to cleveland, actually, so its not entirely crazy, but not likely. Hafner AND Sizemore AND Crisp, I don't think so. Sorry.

I think the rotation of

Schilling

Burnett

Clement

Wakefield

Papelbon

is more solid top to bottom and is more realistic.

it was hafner and jake westbrooke with a choice of sizemore or crisp

According to sources today the most likely destination for Manny Ramirez is the LA Angles. Trade discussions would start with the Red Sox inquiring about Ervin Santana....as they should. I'm very impressed with Santana and at 22 years old this kid is someone to target. The Angels are also looking to dump off Steve Finley and Darin Erstad for money issues. I'm not excited about either of them but they are excellent defensive players. They would be good to have late in the ballgame.....but they are very expensive for defensive replacements.

I would be more interested in trying to snag Casey Kotchman away from the Angels. Trading Manny for Kotchman and Santana would be a great deal for us....but the money would be too one-sided so that area would need to be worked out.

Getting Santana and Kotchman would be great, but with the money involved we will, more than likely, have to relieve them of one big contract in addition to the youngsters. Erstad is only signed through 2006, so I'd take a year of GG level defense at 1B. A better proposal for the Angels, IMO, is to push for Kendry Morales. He's not quite ready, so the Angels will be reluctant to deal Kotchman and Erstad, leaving a hole in their infield. Kendry/Santana/Erstad for Manny? Manny's production will be missed, but that is true of any deal proposed thus far. This is another trade that makes the post-2007 team look very good.

I like that trade a lot. There are so many options on Anaheim but that would certainly make sense for us.

Darin Erstad isn't a great hitter but he can play both the OF and 1B which is important for us. Not to mention Erstad is a great team player and he just looks like a Red Sox doesn't he? We could go that route and I like adding Kendry in the mix with Santana. The Angels have the money to make this deal so perhaps it won't be that big a deal. They have to be excited of the possibility Manny, Vlad, and Anderson could be hitting in there big spots next season.

I was reading the Angels would be more interested in Konerko but that makes NO sense to me. Why would they want Konerko when they have Kotchman. Unless they trade him that seems stupid cause I think Kotchman will be a better player in the end. Whoever wrote the article probably doesn't like Manny so I'm not going to read much into it. This sounds like a good move on both teams parts. The Angels are stacked with young players they can afford to move some bodies to establish more offense. Its not like they would take a huge hit by any means. If they move Santana they can put Escobar back in the rotation and be fine. I have a feeling something could really get done here and if Theo is smart and really puts thought into this move he could come away with some great young talent.

Alright I just wanted to visualize this idea:

Red Sox trade Manny Ramirez for Ervin Santana / Darin Erstad / Kendry Morales (saves the Sox roughtly $10 million). With this free money the Sox can persue Paul Konerko and lets say we can sign him. The Red Sox then find a way to make a trade with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for Aubrey Huff to take over for Manny in the OF. This leaves the Red Sox with a batting lineup:

1. Dustin Pedroia (2B )®

2. Edgar Renteria (SS )®

3. David Ortiz (DH)(L)

4. Paul Konerko (1B )®

5. Aubrey Huff (LF )(L)

6. Jason Varitek (C )(S)

7. Trot Nixon ( RF )(L)

8. Kevin Youkilis (3B )®

9. Darin Erstad (CF )(L)

Rotation:

1. Curt Schilling

2. Tim Wakfield

3. Matt Clement

4. Jonathan Papelbon

5. Ervin Santana

....upgrades the defense, all around batting lineup, and the starting rotation has some young stars in the making. Thats my 2006 Boston Red Sox...lets see if any of it can get done.

i do like that lineup and rotation and as for the bullpen lets say wells is traded for otsuka, and by some means the sox are able to grasp onto bj ryan or Scott Eyre

long relief- Lenny DiNardo

lefty situation- Mike Myers

set up men- Akiniro Otsuka

Mike Timlin

BJ Ryan/Scott Eyre

closer- Keith Foulke in his 2004 form

a reliable bullpen to say the least

course Manny DelCarmen and Craig hansen will get call ups the course of 2006. IMO look for Manny to fill in Timlin's role come 2007

don't trade Manny to the Angels. the Sox and Yanks will have to go through them every year to get to the ALCS. Can you imagine Manny and Vlad back to back? I'm telling you, you are going to regret trading him to a contender.
Posted

Its no better than Ortiz and Manny...didn't win anything for us this year....its not always about the batting lineup.

pitching, pitching, pitching....its all about pitching

With a trade like the one I posted....our pitching gets better simply with the upgraded defense. Our starting rotation and bullpen can be upgraded...and our batting lineup is still decent. Maybe the Angels end up with a great middle hitting group....but I would also consider the fact there outfield consists of Manny, Anderson, and Vlad...not a great defensive outfield...so it has its pros and cons. I'll take the trade and pitch our way through the Angels rather than attempt to out hit them (which we can do even without Manny).

To the dude who said Heilman would be a starter ( im to lazy for the quote button, yeah thats right)

Anyways, goofiness aside, Heilman would be a better option out of the bullpen for us then he would in the rotation since we already have 3 young guys waiting in the wings. Lester, Sanchez, Dinardo. Heilman would be something nice to get to add some much needed stability to our bullpen next year.

CL - Ryan? Foulke? Hansen?

SU - Delcarmen, Timlin, Hansen? Foulke?

MRP - Heilman, Dinardo

LRP - Dinardo

Specialist - Myers, Bradford

im probably leaving people out but i dont much care since im also writing an essay for college and my thoughts are alittle jumbled. So theres my beautiful 06 bullpen hogwash.

I just read that the Padres offered Brian Giles 3 years - 21 million contract. Its on the table and he hasn't accepted it but its there. I think he can still play at 37 but I don't know how much more I would push that contract offer. Giles is a better hitter than Johnny Damon and plays good defense....I don't know how Damon can ask for much more than $7 million a year.

I dont think the money is the matter, to me the matter is the years. hes asking for 5 plus and thats not doable at all.

Now im hearing that he's most likely going to end up in Los Angeles with the Angels. We should try for K-Rod and a nice bat say Kotchman or Vladdy.

i dont think a manny for vlad trade would really happen. As reported Manny if a trade is done with the angels, would be sent to them in return for starting pitcher Ervin Santana, and 1st baseman Darin Erstad or Steve Finley

ixnay on Finley

Posted

if there is a trade that sends manny to the angels and we get satana and erstad out of it, come on thats not close to enough...here's what trade i would like to see;

Angels;

Manny

Red Sox;

Chone Figgins-CF/LF

Ervin Satana

Kotchman

Erstad-maybe can come back to 2000 season

im not guessing who we would get

from boston.com

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Angels appear to be the likeliest partner if/when the Sox explore dealing unhappy slugger Manny Ramirez, who again has asked out of Boston. Ramirez representative Geno Mato told Sox owner John W. Henry Friday that Ramirez wants to be dealt and will not report to spring training if he remains a member of the Red Sox. The Sox' foremost need is pitching, and any conversation with the Angels is expected to begin with the Sox asking about 22-year-old Ervin Santana, the righthander who went 12-8 with a 4.65 ERA as a rookie. That would make a possible 2006 rotation of Schilling, Wakefield, Papelbon, Clement and Santana. Los Angeles is looking to unload salary, specifically 40-year-old center fielder Steve Finley ($7 million in 2006) and 31-year-old Darin Erstad ($8.5 million).

The Sox aren't likely to touch Finley, but they might be willing to absorb Erstad's salary, given that he could play first base or center field. Ramirez, during an August visit to play the Angels, confided in a veteran teammate how much he liked Anaheim. Ramirez remarked that no one bothered him during a visit to a local mall. The teammate explained the lack of fan pestering by telling Ramirez that if he played in Southern California he might be making $20 million a year, but his next-door neighbor would be making $25 million.

Darin Erstad will be more of the odd man out. Chone Figgins is their best leadoff hitter they have had in some time.

Is Manny is 10/5 by now? If so he can't go to the Mets if he don't wanna.

Vlad ad Manny is scary as hell. Seriously, the two best hitters in the game, (with respect to Pujols and Rodriguez) back to back. Frightening.

if manny and vlad are able to over-do what Manny and Papi were past three seasons, then i'll be awe struck. undoubtedly papi and manny have been the best 1-2 punch in baseball since the Ted Williams era. No way of arguing, the stats back themselves up

Papi/Manny duo 2003 - 2005 seasons

244 HRs, 766 RBIs

not necessarily. I do believe Ortiz could still have a great year with or without Manny

Vlad this past season even with out a silver slugger behind him had 32 HRs and 108 RBIs, i know Papi and he could do the same or even better. No doubt one of the elite hitters of this time.

Pursuing Ramirez Is Not Easy for Angels

Angel General Manager Bill Stoneman's expected exploration of a bid for Boston slugger Manny Ramirez could get complicated. According to baseball sources, trade talks probably will expand to include the Arizona Diamondbacks, who could send third baseman Troy Glaus to the Red Sox in a three-way deal. In exchange for Ramirez, the Angels could send first baseman Darin Erstad and a prospect or two to Boston and additional players and prospects to Arizona.

A representative of Ramirez, due to make $57 million over the next three years, informed Red Sox owner John Henry on Friday that Ramirez wants to be traded, and the outfielder's agent said that the Angels are "the most attractive option" for the outfielder, who in 2005 hit .292 with 45 home runs and 144 runs batted in after batting .308 with 43 homers and 130 RBIs in 2004.

I dont know what to think about Troy Glaus. true he can have 40+ HRs and 100+ RBIs, and does have a career .319 batting avg at Fenway Park.

--career .253 batting avg speaks words. Full seasons has struck out 140 or more times.

--2003 and 2004 were injury marred seasons

--error happy, five of his eight seasons in the majors has made 19 or more errors at 3rd base.

--Him or Youk would have to transition to 1st base.

who knows, maybe donning the red sox uniform and calling fenway park his home could erase those cons about him. :dunno:

First off....Vlad and Manny is no better than Ortiz and Manny......I can't believe you guys aren't giving David Ortiz enough credit....you have all seen him hit as I have....MVP. Not to mention you can guarantee the Red Sox will get another bat to back Ortiz up.

As far as this trade making the Angels playoff contenders....guys...the Angels are already playoff contenders as are the Red Sox. Whats more likely...Manny Ramirez bat getting them far in the post season or the Red Sox pitching and defense getting them far. Not to mention you need to think further down the road about a player like Ervin Santana.....he was ranked higher on the Angels prospect list last season AHEAD of Bobby Jenks...look how he turned out.

You can forget Manny for Vlad...whats the point?? Angles gain nothing from that cause not only is Vlad a great hitter but he has a great arm. I like Darin Erstad cause of his defensive capabilities. He can play in the OF for us (give guys a rest), he can play 1B, come off the bench....whatever....the guy is a baseball player.

If we could make the deal for Ervin Santana (22 year old with great stuff), Darin Erstad (leadership, reliable, plays hard) and one other prospect I would strongly consider the deal.

As for Troy Galus thats interesting....what I would do is let Glaus play 1B where he is less likely to be injured. The one thing I don't like about Glaus is his defense sucks. But if we aquire Darin Erstad he helps that problem from time to time. You could also let Ortiz and Glaus switch on and off at 1B/DH. Then if the Red Sox would get someone like Aubrey Huff who can play 3B/1B/OF....check this out...talk about versatility....

Darin Erstad - CF/OF/1B

Troy Galus - 1B/3B/DH

David Ortiz - 1B/DH

Aubrey Huff - 1B/OF/3B

....Francona would have a field day coming up with matchups and lineups. To get an idea:

1. Dustin Pedroia (2B )®

2. Edgar Renteria (SS )®

3. David Ortiz (DH )(L)

4. Troy Glaus (1B )®

5. Aubrey Huff (OF )(L)

6. Jason Varitek ©(S)

7. Trot Nixon (LF )(L)

8. Kevin Youkilis (3B )®

9. Darin Erstad (CF )(L)

....thats awesome....the money run down:

Glaus: 9 million

Erstad: 8 million

Huff: 5 million

as opposed to paying Manny 20 million PLUS whatever else we would need to fill CF and 1B.

I can't believe you guys aren't giving David Ortiz enough credit....you have all seen him hit as I have....MVP.

thank you, words out of my mouth. Ortiz is through and through one of the best hitters in baseball today. Can Manny make any player belt up to 50 HRs and drive in just under 150 Runs? sure it helps, but just a little. Does anyone else remember that by season's end, Ortiz was being intentionally walked to get to Manny?? i think that speaks volumes.

Yes I think given if Troy Glaus is transitioned over to 1st base, would stay healthier and not as much errors as he has done at 3rd base. And with a career .319 batting avg in Boston; it might bode well that he has a swing fit for Fenway Park. Im bit by bit warming up to the thought.
