Statement: AJ Burnett is this year's Carl Pavano

Recommended Posts

I heard Gammons say that on Mike and Mike. The major difference between Carl Pavano and Burnett is that Burnett has great stuff. The problem is he is a classic underachiever. So was Vazquez and Clement. Great stuff but underachievers. I wouldnt trust him in the hitters paradise that is the AL (in particular the AL East).

Its hard to say. Pavano had injury issues most of the season so its hard to know what he would have done in the 2nd half. He might have adjusted and been able to pitch better. I don't think its a question of there stuff its a question if they are a big market type pitcher. Can the guy deal with the pressure in Boston or NY. Guys like Curt Schilling, Roger Clemens, Tim Wakefield, Mike Mussina....they can do it....I still think Vazquez would have done alright given more time. He had a tough 2nd part to the season just as Matt Clement did. Burnett has better stuff than both of them though. You just need to know whats in his head.

well given the comments he made at the end of last season, I don't know if he has it mentally. if he thinks it was bad in Florida, wait till he catches a whiff of a losing April in NY or Boston.

His comments last year should have no barring on how we look at the guy because he was completely screwed. He neeeded to make one more start for his incentives to kick in and thats why the marlins skipped him on his last start. His gripe with them was legit and I think anyone in his position would have acted the same way.

That being said I want no parts of this guy. I think that with the right pitching coach his career could end up being great but I really don't want the sox to take that risk ... especially with his price tag.

If he had said that comment while wearing a Red Sox or Yankee uni, he owulda been destroyed. Witness Keith Foulke. If you wanna play in environments like ours, then you need to develop an extremely thick skin to all the political BS that goes on.

The guy got screwed. The Marlins intentionally screwed him out of money. I think that RSN would have torn the front office a new one if they did that to one of our players. He did nothing wrong. All he did was get pissed off that he was getting cheated out of money. Foulke wasn't being cheated out of money.

What does that have to do with the Red Sox? The Yankees are the ones that take the weavers and Pavanos. I don't expect Theo to offer money to a guy who he doesn't think will perform well.

He didnt say it had anythign to to do with the Red Sox. The word he used was "I'd shy away" not "you should shy away". And this is the "general baseball" forum ;)

no doubt theo has made great deals in his first 3 season. but like all GMs he has offered money to players or traded for; who didnt perform well.

note some of these names will give cold shivers to red sox nation's spines

taken from Boston.com

Jeremy Giambi, John Halama, Mike Remlinger, Ramiro Mendoza, Chad Fox, Byung Hung Kim who was rocked in the ALDS, Scott Sauerbeck, Jeff Suppan, Scott Williamson, Brandon Lyon, Todd Jones, Bruce Chen, Jason Shiell, Steve Woodard, Bobby Jones, Bob Howry, Rudy Saenez, Matt Mantei, Jeremi Gonzalez (great guy but 6.18 ERA), Ramon Vazquez, Mike Remlinger, Jose Cruz Jr.

Well he compared him to 2 mistakes made by the Yankees.

Hmm, what other "Yankee mistakes" were named in this thread.

MAYBE THE GIANT THING THAT SAY CARL PAVANO IN THE TITLE.

Of course, if I bring it up its wrong. Jesus are y'all niggaz that dense?

I don't think Burnett would be a wise investment because he hasn't proven himself. This is similar to the experiences of Weaver and Pavano and Vazquez etc. I'd prefer a scrappy guy, for lack of a better word, who's gotten to the big leagues with hard work and not just talent. Guys like that adjust to big spots better I think. Shawn Chacon and Aaron Small come to mind.

It's not like I'm saying anything controversial either, I'm agreeing with the topic starter. I don't think Burnett will be worth the paycheck he gets.

I agree, I dont think its fair to declare the signing of Pavano a mistake based on an injury-plagued half-a-season.

If he is as bad next year then I will admit its a mistake, btu I think everyone needs an adjustment period, it just so happens then during his he got hurt.

So what does that have to do with the Red Sox? I'm still not getting this. As far as I know, my team is going after him too. This isn't a criticism of AJ possibly being pursued by the Red Sox

He's an underachiever, hasn't proven himslef, and also gets injured A LOT. What was his ERA in the NL? 4.00+? Statistically NL pitchers going to the AL get heir ERAs raised by 1.00. I wouldn't offer a 5.00 pitcher 8-10 mill.

Just for the record, if CASHMAN (not George) signs A.J. burnett, I take back everything good I said about him in the other thread. This is a guy we should let go pitch for Boston or Toronto so that he could get hurt, and mess up their pitching staff.

No, no, seriously, we don't want him, YOU take him.

Please you take him. Imagine a rotation of Clement and Burnett, and compare it to our Wright-Pavano rotation. Yuck, I think all NL pithcers should by law be forced to stay in the NL (though Wright was an AL pithcer b4, still, I don't care)

You guys are treating Burnett like the plague. I don't think he'll be worth what he gets, but I think he's got upside. I don't think he's a fit for the Yankees, but he's not a bad pitcher.

It's being reported through Burnett's agent that AJ is looking for a 5 year deal, have fun Toronto.

wow 5 years. Who's his agent Scott Boras?

I agree I think Curt Schilling should stay in the NL.....oh wait....thanks for the World Series Curt....nope he's good, he can stay.

Clearly the numbers show that a pitcher will do better in the NL. However there are more 10+ winners in the American League with a 4.00 ERA. How is it Roger Clemens can have a 1.87 ERA with 13 wins but David Wells can have 15 wins with over a 4.00 ERA. If either the Red Sox or Yankees can get pitchers who can go to the AL and keep a mid 3.50 ERA or so....then you have an excellent pitcher on your hands. Thats hard to do though. In the case of AJ Burnett he has great stuff he just needs to be consistant with it. Before September he had only given up 4+ earned runs in a game 5 times. You do that with the Sox or Yanks and you have a 20 game winner on your hands. That being said I don't want to see him land in Toronto. Having to face Halladay, Burnett, Chacin, and Lilly is not much fun for either the Red Sox or Yankees.
