Rotoworld: Red Sox signed RHP Franklin Nunez to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. It's certainly worth a try. Nunez, 29, is one of the hardest throwers around, but he missed time with a strained shoulder last season and didn't contribute in Tampa Bay. He'll be stashed away at Triple-A Pawtucket.

Nunez's fast ball has been known to top out in the 97-100 range. He just hasnt been able to harness the control. Still young, so doesnt hurt the Sox of giving him a shot as added insurance stashed away in Pawtucket.

Yeah I guess it can't really hurt to sign the guy, but a 29 year old who's yet to harness his fastball isn't likely to be able to do it this year. Plus if he's from the DR he's probably closer to 35 than 29.

FWIW, baseball peak is considered to be 27-31. Yes there are plenty of players who play at a high level well beyond 31, but most of them were stars by the time they were 27 also. What's my point? It's that while 29 is young in life, it is approaching old in baseball, especially if you are 29 and still need time in the minors to work things out. This guy is probably nothing more than injury insurance.

Mike Myers taking a non-common sense shot at RS

“The one thing the Yankees really concentrated on (during the offseason) was having a versatile bullpen,” said Myers, who will turn 37 in June. “The bullpen we have this year really gives (manager Joe) Torre a lot of options.” In Myers’ mind, that is something the Red Sox did not give him during the offseason.

Sorry Mike but last time I checked, the Sox did beef up their bullpen from last year in versatility

So, he can't play for them? or he can play, he just isn't signed by them?

what are you talking about.....crisp is a red sox.....he was traded for and the sox have him under a controlled salary for the next 4 seasons before he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

theres speculation that the Marlins' firesale isnt over, ace Dontrelle Willis & 3rd baseman Miguel Cabrera could be moved during the season

Daily Herald: As if Joe Girardi didn’t have it bad enough, there’s already talk that stud lefty Dontrelle Willis and third baseman Miguel Cabrera are both going to be available at the trade deadline this summer because their contracts are about to go through the roof.

Willis is collecting $4.3 million this season and has two years of arbitration eligibility left, and Cabrera ($472,000) will reach arbitration status next off-season, when he’s likely to be worth at least $5 million.

There’s not a team in baseball, including the Cubs and White Sox, who wouldn’t take a long look at the 24-year-old Willis.

It would be worth it to land either one of those guys.

it would be worth it.....if either of those guys gets traded either the angels or the dodgers might win the bidding with the farm systems they have as they have.

Either one would probably cost 2 of Lester, Papelbon, Pedroia, and Hansen, and maybe another low level prospect. Cabrera would still have 3 years starting next year until he was eligible for free agency though. The article may say He'd likely get $5 million in arbitration, and it might be right, but that sounds like easily a record for a first year arbitration player.

The Pirates are reportedly looking into doing a trade with Boston

Pittsburgh- Matt Clement (Boston would have to pick up part of his salary) or they might take back Bronson Arroyo

Boston- Craig Wilson, and Boston would likely ask for one of the prized pitching prospects to be included

Intriguing trade possibility

Sounds good to me. Wilson would...platoon with Trot? Hopefully we'd give Clement and not Arroyo.

I personally don't want to trade Clement after seeing him pitch so well in the spring. Hes throwing that sinker again and id like to give him a chance. I especially don't want to trade him for a minor piece like a platoon outfielder. Thats a bad idea. I wouldn't mind at all the Sox just dealing Wells off to the highest bidder and then going north as is. The sox only need a thirdbasemen (possibly if Lowell keeps taking a number 2 on all his AB's) but they'd have to overpay to get anything close to quality and since its not a priority right now since they do have a couple of in-house options, they will probably just wait to fix that if it becomes a problem. The most likely scenario is wells is dealt to a team in need of an SP for a low price.

Clement is a first half pitcher. Him throwing well in ST means nothing to me.

Craig Wilson is 25-30/100 guy when healthy.

Clement might be a first half pitcher, but I'm willing to take a chance on him. Wilson would not be a 30 - 100 guy if he were on the sox. He would hit against lefties mostly and not put up much numbers

Can we throw in David Wells and get a 6-pack of Pabst in addition?

That deal would look like:

Sox Deal:

Clement and Wells

Sox Get:

Wilson and Pabst.

I'm so sick of Wells' s***. He just needs to shut his mouth. Does he truly expect the sox to just hold the #2 spot in the rotation for him while he tries to figure out if he would rather be a Padre than a Red Sox? Just enjoy your money man.

All kidding aside, I would really like to get Craig Wilson and Clement is a valuable trading chip. I think we're going to want Papelbon in the rotation eventually, so freeing up space should be a priority.

First of all no way the Pirates are about to take on Wells contract. We have too many pitchers as is. The only reason we would take Clement would be because we want atleast 1 veteran pitcher. Taking Wells and Clement would hurt the Pirates, becuase it would force a pitcher who is ready for the show to either go to the bullpen or back down to AAA.

Who is Pabst? If anything the Pirates would request a spect with Clement ... I strongly doubt we'd send the Red Sox any spects.

Pabst, PBR....Pabst Blue Ribbon, man, the king of cheap s***-beer. The last time I saw it in the store it was like $2.88 a 6-pack.

Oh god Pabst. Talk about a beer that gives you horrible runny beer shits. Possible the worst beer ever.

some trade talks are beginning to brew, redsox.bostonherald.com

The Sox sent $1.5 million to the Reds in the Monday trade, in effect evening out the Pena and Bronson Arroyo salaries for this season. Boston and Cincinnati may not be done. The pitching-starved Reds have been eyeing relief pitcher Jermaine Van Buren, who was sent to the minors last week with the first round of cuts. The Sox are expected to trade Tony Graffanino within the next week
