Macha out as A's manager despite turnaround

Associated Press

Oakland Athletics manager Ken Macha was out of a job Wednesday after failing to reach an agreement on a new contract. "We decided it's best to part ways at this point," general manager Billy Beane said on a conference call. We offered a three-year deal with a club option and they countered with a three-year deal without a club option," Beane said. "I don't think we were ever going to be able to bridge the gap. It was a significant gap."

Macha led the A's to the AL West title in his first year as manager in 2003, the club's fourth straight playoff berth. But Oakland failed to reach the postseason the past two years despite a 91-win season in 2004 and 88 victories this year.

look for him to take over the job managing for the Pirates, I'm sure he will turn around that team as he did with the A's.

Trammell should be interviewed right away for the job in LA, IMO he did a great job with what he had in Detroit. The team tanked due to injuries, nothing he did. Fact is if Leyland didnt want to manage again, Trammell would still be getting his final year in Detroit.

Heres the manager openings that are available or IMO will be at the end of the playoff season

Tampa

Detroit

LA

Oakland

Colorado

Florida

Pittsburgh

Baltimore

8 openings is about average, the biggest question is obviously, where does Lou Pinella go. Obviously not Tampa, Detroit, Colorado, or Pittsburgh. The man also wants to go to a team that can make the playoffs next year. I think he goes to LA, despite the fact that he doesnt want to go to the west coast. I think while the Marlins are a strong possibility, he wouldn't be able to handle another team with payroll restrictions.

Macha will become the next Pirates manager as he has expressed interest in the job. I believe that this year will also mark the return of Grady Little to the coaching ranks. I wouldnt be suprised to see Grady in Florida. Colorado is a little less clear, if Hurdle gets canned I could see someone like Tony Pena get an interview, Pena is a good manager in a horrible situation. Not that Colorado is alot better but Todd Helton and Jeff Francis gives hope to their fans at least.

I for one do not think that Bobby Valentine will be back this season. From what ive heard he is really happy in Japan. Plus the players are also happy with him in Japan, like they are with Bowa at ESPN

I've been saying for a while that Macha is going to be the Pirates coach and now it's all set. I don't think any coach would leave a situation as good as Oakland unless they could have their dream job. Macha being from Pittsburgh has dreamed of coaching the Pirates, and will next year.

Don't expect us to all the sudden become a playoff team or anything, but if he brings in the right coaching staff I think we can contend in the future.

Pirates have talent and pitching. With Duke and the Wilson's and that other lefty (I forgot his name...) They are good.

Macha didn't "turn around" the A's... if anyone has saved that ballclub from Royals like play its Beane.

We've had "good young talent" for the last decade. Heard of Jason Kendall? Brian Giles? Aramis Ramirez? Jason Schmidt? Esteban Loaiza? Denny Neagle? Jon Lieber? Francisco Cordova? Jose Guillen? Al Matin? Kris Benson? Todd Ritchie? Scott Sauerbeck? Pat Meares? Chad Hermansen? Craig Wilson? Jack Wilson? Kip Wells? ... I'll stop there because I think I've proved my point. Did we ever win with anything with any of those guys? It seems like the Pirates talent is always overhyped especially pitchers. That being said I think Zack Duke is going to be a star, and I wish he was with another team so the best years of his career wouldn't be wasted playing for the pirates.

13 consecutive losing seasons has to mean something.

Lets not forget our ace of 2005, wakefield was a homegrown talent for the Pirates ;)

Macha still looking for a new job

Pirates hire Jim Tracy as manager

By ALAN ROBINSON, AP Sports Writer

October 11, 2005

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Jim Tracy was hired Tuesday as the Pittsburgh Pirates' manager, The Associated Press learned. The Pirates will make the announcement at a news conference later Tuesday, according to a source close to the team who requested anonymity. The move sends Tracy from a team that traditionally has one of baseball's highest payrolls to one with one of the lowest. Tracy, 49, has been the front-runner from the start of the Pirates' search last week because of his long-standing ties to Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield, with whom he worked in the Montreal Expos' organization in the 1990s.

Tracy beat out the only two known candidates for the job, former Oakland Athletics manager Ken Macha and Atlanta Braves coach Fredi Gonzalez. Tracy replaces Lloyd McClendon, who was fired Sept. 6 during his fifth consecutive losing season and was replaced for the rest of the season by bench coach Pete Mackanin, who was not considered for the job on a permanent basis. Littlefield also wanted to interview former Pirates manager Jim Leyland, but he took the Tigers' job last week before he could talk with the Pirates again.

Tracy interviewed with Littlefield last week by phone and, after Littlefield met Sunday in Pittsburgh with Macha, Tracy and Littlefield met Monday in Houston -- the home of Tracy's agent, Alan Hendricks. Tracy was to have made $700,000 next year with the Dodgers before the two sides parted ways following a 71-91 season, but Tracy is expected to make more than that in Pittsburgh.

With the Pirates, Tracy takes over a team coming off 13 consecutive losing seasons, three short of the major league record, and a 67-95 record but one that broke in a half-dozen promising rookies during the second half of this season, including left-handed starters Zach Duke (8-2, 1.81 ERA) and Paul Maholm (3-1, 2.18 ERA). Tracy is expected to have free rein to hire his own coaches, as the Pirates coaches were told following the season finale on Oct. 2 they would not be brought back.
