the ESPN poll had Ortiz as the MVP 59% to 41%.......the people have spoken.

....here is an interesting debate. Obviously everyone talks about Ortiz not playing the field and that advantage goes to A-Rod. However, I feel there are certain qualities in a player that make him an MVP.

Baseball teams talk about having good chemistry. Having good chemistry and a strong bond can help teams overcome difficult times and provide a boost when they are struggling. A-Rod does not provide that for the Yankees....just ask the rest of the team. Sure he is a great hitter....but if you take him off that team...the attitude of the team might be better. Not to mention you still have Sheff, Giambi, Matsui to drive in 100 RBI and 25+ HR. If you take Ortiz off the Red Sox....that attitude drops dramatically and this team would certainly not look the same. He was an icon for this 2005 team and thats what the MVP is. Last year when you looked at Anaheim you thought Vlad Guerrero....he carried the team on his back just as Ortiz has done.

....stats, playing the field, big plays, big hits......thats all important but if you talk to anyone who really knows baseball they tell you a players attitude is just as important cause it influences everyone around you. That is why David Ortiz is the MVP and not Alex Rodriguez.

Good to see Papi with more of the vote.

Arod may have to also play defence but common look at what Papi has done for the Sox escpacially from the 7th innning on. Arod may play defence but Papi desevers that MVP more than Arod does.

ARod didn't really impress much in the Fenway series, especially w/ that error in the 1st game. Papi deff got more attention when he started winning games consitently with his late inning heroics. People seem to not look at "Most Valuable" but rather best stats. Maybe ARod had a better average and all but if you took him out of the Yankess lineup for this season, maybe they lose 2-3 extra games. if you took away Papi we're about 5 back at least.

I think the Yanks winning the AL East will prob help Arod, too. And I'm not glorifying Arods glove saying its more impressive than his bat, I'm just saying he is a damn good fielder along with being able to put up the same offensive numbers as Ortiz.

My money is on A-Rod, but then again I'm a Yankee fan. As someone said before, if Arod was in Boston and Ortiz was in the Bronx, the arguments wouldbe completely flipped.

Both guys have a great case to win it. I wouldn't be upset if Ortiz pulled it out. I think theres a decent chance Mo might cut into some of Arod's votes and hand Ortiz the victory. Don't be surprised to see Mo finish top 5 in the MVP

Hmm, I didn't really think of that. That's similar to how both Jeter and Matsui were both on the final vote ballot for the ASG, in effect removing one of the staples of baseball from the game all together. I guess we will just have to see how it goes :dunno:

They won because Small and Chacon went 17-3 not because of ARod, we're lookin for most valuable

Excuse me that I don't think someone who hits under .300 with less homers than Arod without being able to field is exactly MVP.

Also, please don't forget that the Yankees were 11-19 in the beginning of the year. There weren't very many people on base for Arod or chances that the Yanks were in a game that was winnable with a swing of the bat, and he could STILL put up MVP numbers. Put Arod in Fenway and his numbers would blow Ortiz out of the water.

Hard to say 2 starting pitchers are responsible for 17 wins in 20 games. It's kind of a stretch in your argument

Posted
Well technically, pitchers are credited with wins and losses. And a team is practically nothing without decent pitching.

Yes, but its impossible to say 2 starting pitchers are responible for 17 wins in a 20 game stretch when they will at most pitch probbaly 8 times during that span.

Ortiz hit .300 get it right before you explode. Also, he had ONE less homerun, and close to 20 more RBI's than A-Rod. Also Ortiz had 20 homeruns that either tied the game or gave Boston the lead, so your wrong there.

Yankee Stadium has a VERY short left field (in height and distance) fence. Just because Ortiz has The Monster doesn't mean that all of his stats come AT FENWAY.

hey soxsceurity Im sure you every now and then are able to talk to the sox players. if you could, let Tony G know that many fans and I for one havent thought any less of him from what happened on Wednesday, still reeling for him. Unfortunately yes by the final out it did end up costly, but I know and see how much pride he takes in playing baseball. I do hope to see him back as a Red Sox come spring training.

^^^^ Yea I see them every game because of where I work near the clubhouse before the games. But, I'm not hating Tony either. They all make mistakes, his just happened to come at a bad time. I'll give him some hope if I see him today.
