Maine ready to start at Yankee Stadium, Small Gets First Look at O's in 2005

Baltimore (70-79) at New York (86-63), 7:05 p.m. ET

The Orioles scored two runs in the first three innings, but then their offense was shut down, allowing the Yankees to rally for a 3-2 win on Monday at Yankee Stadium. With seven of the next 10 games against playoff contenders New York and Boston, Baltimore will try to play spoiler, beginning Tuesday. Right-hander John Maine will make his first career appearance against the Yankees. He has been solid since joining the rotation in late-August. Maine did not make it past the fifth inning of his first four starts, but he finally broke that string when he turned in 6 2/3 solid frames on Sept. 13 in a no-decision against the Rangers.

New York will counter with right-hander Aaron Small, a journeyman who joined the club from Triple-A Columbus on July 20. Small made an emergency start against the Rangers and collected his first win as a Yankee, then he alternated between the rotation and bullpen.

Small has won three straight outings, including a five-hitter against the A's on Sept. 3. The Orioles are a respectable 6-5 against the Bombers this season, but most of those games occurred when the O's were in first place in the American League East. The Orioles haven't won a season series against the Yankees since 1997, and they haven't won a season series at Yankee Stadium in 10 years. Brian Roberts, who singled and scored a run on Monday, has hit safely in 35 of his past 47 games.

I'm excited for this game, Yankees coming off a big Bubba Crosby Walk-off. And not to mention the reason we even have a shot at the Sox, Aaron Small. He has a chance to be the first pitcher since 1970's(I believe) to start off 8-0 when his first win was after the ALl Star game/break

What I think: Small 6 2/3IP, 4Ks, 2BB, 1ER

Maine 7IP, 4Ks, 4BB, 3 ER

Yankees win 4-2

I beleive you mean '9 - 0.' Small already has 8 wins.

OMG, Roberts might have snapped his arm in half on that "Cliff Floyd play". On a bunt he went to cover 1st base and the thrown was inside the line and Crosby ran thruogh him. His arm was right in the baseline and he is near tears.

I just got back from the game, really good. I never understand why so many people leave in the 7th inning. Anyway, it was a good game overall and good thing I didn't have a good view of what happened to Roberts because it sounds really gory.

Dislocated elbows tend to be bad. Really tough break for Roberts, he's had a hell of a season.

Good win, really encouraging to see Sheffield with some more hits and RBIs. Seems like Aarons wonderful run may be coming to an end, but man has he been a godsend. Still locating and throwing strikes. I trust him a helluva lot more than Jaret Wright too.

Tell you one thing about these Yankees....

Yep, they're putting up runs by the baker's dozen plus a few for good measure, but.....

BUT......

The opponent keeps coming back at them with almost as many runs.

Betcha they can't put them up like that as often as they hand them out like that. The Yankees are gonna fold like a house of cards. 5 days from now their only hope will be for either Chicago or Cleveland to lose every remaining game.

I disagree, because we pitched our scrubs after Small left. You guys have the same problem. Actually we our better off because of Leiter, Sturtz, Gordon, and Mo. You do you have Timlin. You do realize we are tied for first in the lost column, and you guys don't play well on the road.

Yes hands down Gordon and Mo are best end of game pitchers compared to Sox

We still have trusted relievers in Timlin, Papelbon, Delcarmen, DiNardo and Hansen---Bradford and Myers are both reliable when they are used in lefty/righty situations. I dont think you realize that this is the best month the Sox bullpen has had in a bit.

Al Leiter a reliable reliever, you say huh? in September in 3 games (1 started) he has a 7.20 ERA. Let alone alot of times batters are able to make contact with his pitches, a .292 opposing batting avg is not something to hold onto for your relievers to have.

September in 3 games (9.2 innings) 17 Hits, 10 Runs (7 ER), 2 Walks, 5 Ks

You do realize we are tied for first in the lost column, and you guys don't play well on the road.

you do realize that just this past week yankees for the first time in awhile were able to go over the 500 mark on the road, so dont act all high and mighty right there.

Sox 38-39

Yanks 38-36
