NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Yankees won a coin flip Monday and would host the Boston Red Sox if a one-game playoff is needed to break a tie for the AL East title.

The Yankees, who trailed the Red Sox by three games entering play Monday, end the regular season with three games at Fenway Park from Sept. 30-Oct. 2. If the teams finish with identical records and the wild-card club comes from another division, the Yankees and Red Sox would shift to New York for the tiebreaker game.

New York and Boston last finished the regular season in a tie for first in 1978, when Bucky Dent's three-run homer boosted the Yankees to the division title.

If game is needed to break a tie between Cleveland and the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central, the Guardians would host, and if the Los Angeles Angels and Oakland need a tiebreaker in the AL West, the game would be at Anaheim.

In the event a tiebreaker is needed for the wild card, New York and Oakland would play at Cleveland, and Oakland would play at New York.

If three teams finish with the same record and a tiebreaker is needed, the teams in the same division play a tiebreaker for first place, and the loser meets the team from the other division in a one-game wild-card tiebreaker.

If a tiebreaker game is necessary in the NL wild-card race, Philadelphia would host Houston and Florida, the Marlins would host Houston, the Astros would host Washington, and the Nationals would host the Phillies and Marlins.

lmao owned

More cockiness...no wait, this is just stupidity.

What is so "owned" about that?

These days, it seems like the term "owned" is used as frequently as "hi". <_>

What Yanks fans have been for the past 87 years :D

Oh, I dont mind a little bit of it. It's alrighto be cocky, but YS013 abuses that privilege.

lol I was thinking the same thing. The only time I ever see/hear the expression "owned" is when im on this site, I think its hilarious I laugh everytime.

I wonder what happens if there is a 3-way tie for the Wild Card, but none of the teams in the tie would be in line for the division, for instance: The Yanks, Guardians, and A's are toed at the end of the year. Or The Astros, Marlins, and Phillies are tied. I guess they just determine that when/if the time comes.

Look at this Red Sox team. I'm pretty sure Sox fans have some right to be cocky. I'd prefer the term "extremely confident" myself, though. It honestly won't come down to a tiebreaker, though... sorry Yankees.

I think the difference between confidence and cockiness in this instance is, if you are confident it is because you think your team will win because you have faith in their ability. Being cocky is belittling another team to make you seem superior. I love confidence in a team, thinking they can get the job done. I can't stand however, when people debase another team's ability.

If your reason to think you'd win is because you think the Sox team is the best there is, that's confidence. If the reason to think you'd win is because the "ChokeeZ suck! lolz", that's cockiness. Don't underestimate your opponents, because that's just waiting for disaster.

Cocky. I love it.
No we have no reason to be cocky, we've only been leading the division for what like 5 weeks, almost 8 if you dont count that 1 day the Yankees were a half game up.

Oh belittling another team .... hmmm ... isn't that what Yankee fans have been doing to the Red Sox for years. I can't count the number of times that I've heard "Oh they have no chance ... it's the Red Sox". Just because, finally, the tables have turned don't start crying about people counting the Yankees out.

I think it's fairly obvious who is confident in their team, and who is scared that their team is not making the playoffs. Is it just me or with every day do the Yankee fans here get more and more defensive of their team?

well actually actually its been us on top for the last 11 weeks (8 weeks since that one day yankees had the lead), but hey whos counting ;)

I'm sorry to the Yanks but just look at the remaining schedule.....you can call it cocky or whatever.....but the fact remains the final 7 games for the Red Sox are at home and the final 7 games for the Yankees are on the road. If we only win half the series we have left then the Yankees need to take all of the series from here on out. I just don't see that happening and on top of that....the Guardians have to play Kansas City a bunch of times and they only have a total of 7 games on the road to finish the year.........

......the Red Sox should be looking in at the Chicago White Sox because they have 13 road games and 7 home games left......we can catch them

the white sox's aces in Mark Buehrle and Jon Garland this season havent had a good time facing the Red Sox

2005

Buehrle vs Red Sox in 2 games: 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA

Garland vs Red Sox in 2 games: 1-1 with a 5.25 ERA

each having one game played at Fenway

Garland with the loss lasting just 5.1 innings and giving 5 runs on 9 hits

Buehrle lasting 7 innings giving up 6 runs on 12 hits

Yankee fans can be cocky. Just because I root for them doesn't mean I think it's right.

Go ahead, count the Yankees out. Hell, start planning your parade! For you are no doubt better than any baseball team in the land. Do it now, so the disspointment really sets in when you fail.

If you have reason to be that cocky, then you won't have to worry about the dissapointment.

Stop trying to pick fights with every single one of my posts. Unless you have some sort of an inferiority complex.

Sox having homefield advantage for the playoffs, hard to doubt their chances with that :)

does anybody know what happens 2 teams finish with tied with the best record (in this case the WSox and the RSox)? Do they have a coin flip to determine home field? I doubt they would play a playoff game.

I don't think anyone can count the Yankees out but I don't like your chances. Leaving Yankee stadium 1-2 was actually a plus for the Red Sox. The ace is back and the Yankees need to pull off a real streak. The best way to have done that was to sweep the Sox. If we won that series this thing is over. There is still hope left but you have to go on the road a lot, your pitching staff simply can't get a long win streak going, the injury to Sheffield is a set back, the team is going to start pressing and get frustrated the second something goes wrong.......its just going to be ugly.

if you wanna talk about the Sox chances....I like our chances against the Angels obviously. I like our chances against the White Sox. I'm not thrilled to play the Guardians cause they are a young crowd with nothing to lose since they aren't supposed to be there in the first place. This year I'm not thrilled about our chances against the Cardinals cause they have Carpenter and Mulder. Although we would have home field advantage.

I'm not counting them out, just out of the division.

Our rotation is looking great (knock on wood) while the Yankees is still a mess from day-to-day. Manny's bat's comin' around and our starting line-up collective average is almost .300.

Cockiness.

Class dismissed.

yep, stephen A smith (a yankee fan has spoken)

"I don't think you can count the yankees out, but you CAN count them out of the american league east" - Stephen A. Smith

Do you count the A's out of the playoff mix?

Posted

Negative. The Yankees aren't out of the AL East race. Smith is just being hard on his team and not getting his hopes up incase he does have to settle with the Wild Card. :)

Honestly, anything can happen. I'm just gonna enjoy the ride.

Please do me a favor and never quote Stephen A to prove one of your points again. He's a TV character, not an analyst.
