Embree Likes His Chances Against Ortiz

September 9

New York Post: As a member of the Red Sox in the previous 21/2 seasons, Alan Embree has seen the destruction David Ortiz' bat can cause up close. But if Yankees manager Joe Torre calls on the left-handed reliever to get the left-handed hitting Ortiz out this weekend, Embree isn't going to back down from the Yankee killer who is hitting .304 (17-for-56) with five homers and 16 RBIs against the Yankees this year and .481 (13-for-27) with three homers and seven RBIs at Yankee Stadium.

"When I am right, bet on me," Embree said. "I don't mean that as a slap at David. He is a .300 hitter. Hopefully I can get the other .700." Granted, it's not much to go on, but Embree has a reason to feel confident against Ortiz since Ortiz is 0-for-3 against Embree and has fanned three times. "He is a good friend of mine, but I hope we beat them," said Embree, who was released by the Red Sox and picked up by the Yankees on July 30. "He is one of the most dominating left-handed hitters in the game. You can't argue with his numbers but you have to be aggressive. You try to be too careful and you make a mistake."

Mark Bellhorn has been shunning away his Red Sox teammates, including not returning their calls, just recently walking away from and giving the cold shoulder to former Sox teammate Jay Payton before a game had started against the Athletics as Jay had tried to reacquaint with him, Jay Payton was quoted as "Fine be that way man, dont take this out on me, wait till you get booed by the fans at Yankee Stadium, you thought Fenway Park was bad? I was just trying to say hi but you know, whatever." Bellhorn has had a homerun as a Yankee, but that has been his only hit as a Yankee thus far going 1 for 11 (.091 avg) with 3 strikeouts and 2 Walks. He will get the start tonight against David Wells, "I cant wait to face and beat them, big reason why I had joined this organization."

Though thats all well and good for confidence building for Mark, career wise he is just 1 for 10 against Wells with 5 strikeouts. Gabe Kapler recently on WEEI was discussing the pennant stretch and then asked about going against his former teammate and how have things been with the two since he left. Gabe, "Alright, well I will not lie because Im a truthful man. Mark has just shut us out completely, its crazy its not us who let him go from the team. Those pinstripes have made him really out to be this jerk and I along with many others are not liking it and disgusted by his attitude. But he's still my friend, so I wish the best for him." Sox management were uanavailable for comments. Time will Tell 12 hours away what will go down in the Bronx...

Thanks Embree and Bellhorn after reading these articles, you just made it much easier for me to take pride in booing and rooting against you :thumbdown

I couldn't imagine Torre would go with Embree late in the game against Ortiz.....the only possible reason I can see him making a move like that...is because all the rest of the pitchers have failed against Papi. Forget it they won't get him out in this series nor any other series....this is what David Ortiz lives for. If they are smart they would just pitch around him and take there chances with Manny who has fallen asleep.....although he could wake up any game now.

Why does Embree feel confident that hes gotten Ortiz 3 times, all strikeouts? (1) Ortiz is a much better hitter since Embree faced him when he was a Minnesota Twin (2) Embree was a great reliever at the time he faced Papi

Quick question.....Is Embree sopposed to say "I cant get Ortiz out"? I'm glad he said that.He shouldnt be on the team if he doesnt believe he can get anyone out.

No of course not, but when you suck you keep your mouth shut. When your a LHRP and you can't get a lefty out you don't even talk to the media.

Bellhorn showed how much of a suck ass he really is. He felt stupid cause the Sox didn't want him so he said what he said. It just makes it all the better when it comes to booing the hell outta him.

I think Bell just feels under-appreciated for what he did for us last year, i mean w/o him, we lose the ALCS, then we boo him and want him out of here?(granted he did hit terribley, but we really ragged on him) that probably fueled his fire to hate us, but idk y he walked away from jay payton, they both got booted out of the sox.

Mark has shutout his Sox ex-team mates which he has no right to do so at all. and jay wasnt realeased from boston, he had requested a trade to another team that would give him more playing time. Do you really think Yankee fans will be leniant on Bell if he K's 4 times in a game? as Jay said, he will get it worse at Yankee Stadium

other news, Bell and Embree will have to do without Sheffield tonight. Its just been reported he might need another day off, they are not sure if he can be able to pinch hit, blow to the Yankees offense has Sheffield has been the most dominant batter of their lineup against the Sox, .435 avg with 4 HRs. all other Yanks batters have been hitting under .250 against the Sox this season

there is no crying in baseball.

poor little mark couldnt handle the booing.. In fact, he did badly beacsue the fans booed him..

You cant play the game without balls.

what a little homo...now he isnt talking to his old teammates-I'm glad gabe shared this with the fans.

He is 1 for 11, what will happen to him when the yankee fans boo him...?

he'll have to come clean wih that sex change operation that he/she had last winter.

Well, 1- I don't see Embree getting in the game tonight, maybe Sat., but I don't think today, Becuase I think If we ned someone to put in for Small it'll be Sturtz.

2-Its not like he Garunteed Ortiz to be out on 3 pitches, I think hes said what he said because everyone expects Ortiz to hit a home run everytime hes at bat, and Embrees trying to say like Hey look, I been up agenst this guy before, and I did my job, don't count me out just yet kinda thing.

3-I'm not sure what to take of Bellhorns cold shoulder or anything like that, but David Wells was the same way tward the Yankees when he left, and I still got nothing but love for him, he did his part in New York, we wouldn't resign him, so he went to the Red Sox, and if he had something to say about the team and the fans, fine, I understand. but I'm not going to make fun of the man just because he doesn't like my team anymore

But see theres a big difference. Wells did his job with the Yankees, and wasn't resigned, so him being angry makes sense to me. Khorn sucked this year, and was released. He has no one to blame but himself. Him not talking to former teamates is just him being a cry baby.

Watch out for the Godzilla.

Mark is just like Anakin Skywalker, turning completely to the dark side and all.....well except for the fact that he sucks

I've never seen any of the Star Wars movies, actually. I think I may be the only one in that category

Do you have a legitmate link for the Bellhorn "quotes"?

In for Bellhorn quotes.

We get the New York Post a lot at work and there was a nice article in it about Bellhorn being a Yankee and he had nothing but good things to say about Boston. Unfortunately the article is in my locker at work else I'd transcribe/scan it. I won't be back to work until Sunday. :(

Some pictures also that I found online tonight..

I'm a little confused because these pictures and that Post article I mentioned give the impression that Bellhorn is getting on very well with his ex-teammates. I hope this is the true story.

Embree seems to be a little different as I did read in the Post that all he wants is a World Series win with the Yanks now, etc, etc... No love lost there I guess. :o

I always hated Mark Bellhorn.

Except when he hit those pivotal home runs in the ALCS, right?

(But I agree on the K issue. And the fact that he sucked as a 2B otherwise.)
