sucks to be a Yankee right about now

Tendinitis could end Mussina's season

September 3, 2005

New York Yankees ace Mike Mussina has been diagnosed with tendinitis in his right elbow and acknowledged last night that missing the rest of the season is a ''possibility." According to The Record of Hackensack, N.J., Mussina underwent X-rays and an MRI in Los Angeles and was told by Dr. Lewis Yocum to not pick up a baseball until the pain subsides. Mussina was originally supposed to miss just one start, but said, ''I think it'll be longer than a couple of days based on what [Yocum] told me. When it's going to be? I can't say for sure." Yankees manager Joe Torre would only say that a return to action is ''strictly up to Mike."

Well, this will be interesting to say the least. Torre has done pretty well to keep his team in the hunt, especially given the obstacles he has faced this year. Not entirely sure what he can expect now, but it certainly dampens the outlook.

I suppose they will look to pick up Oil Can Boyd now, continuing the march of Red Sox cast offs.

Even if they do make the playoffs, theyre chances look grim. Now theyre left w/ the inconsistent Johnson, and 3 other unproven starters this year. Mussian has been a big part of this rotation, and this could turn out to be a major loss. If we don't get some room ebtween us and the Yanks now, I will be very dissapointed. At least i won't have to see that stupid bow again for a while.

With the loss of mussina, our starting staff is equal to yours. If our chances are grim, so are the sox's chances.

From Opening Day to now, sure was. I think Chacon, Small and Wang have all been better than Mussina. And since he got back, Wright has pitched better too.

I think 3 of those guys, plus Randy Johnson are far better than whatever rotation Boston wants to throw out there in the playoffs.

The three guys you mentioned -- Chacon, Wang, Small -- have pitched a combined 0 innings in the postseason in their careers. Chacon hasn't pitched in a "big game" in his life.

Mussina just hasn't been himself this season. Mussina's a pitcher i've always kinda liked, hopefully he'll improve over the offseason, and we won't have to face him next year. Or tear him up when we do.

As for the Yankee rotation: Al Leiter was less than spectacular last night. 2/3 IP, 6 ER. Ouch. Sounds like the Al Leiter the Marlins released. Only worse.

Al Leiter has tons of postseason experience...I dont want him starting in the playoffs..... :thumbdown

Jon Lieber didnt have one inning of postseason experience either before last year. That worked out quite well.

Bottom line, if you're not afraid to pitch in NY (as Chacon, Wang and Small have shown), and can succeed in that spotlight, you can do it in the playoffs too, since 90% of the game is half mental anyways.

In the middle of a penant race, every game is a 'big game.'
