Angels may say goodbye to Washburn, hello to Bonds

Los Angeles Times (registration required)

The Times' Mike DiGiovanna reports that the Angels will likely let starter Jarrod Washburn walk when he becomes a free agent in the offseason. There is also talk that the Angels could trade for San Francisco's Barry Bonds.

Same here and I don't think they could put up with bonds.

That's a very ignorant statement.

If Bonds hits out 45 HR's, and draws 150 walks, the Angels would welcome him with open arms. They could work a deal out, probably with Kelvin Escobar, Steve Finely and prospects headed to the Giants, with Bonds going the other way.

ESPN interviewed the Giants' owner; basically he was pretty candid in saying that if they knew he wouldn't be able to play this year, they wouldn't have given him the deal, but how were they to know when he was leading the team in games played?

Hindsight bites in baseball. ;)

If Washburn becomes a free agent, they can't trade him. Even if they sign him, Bonds is, I believe, a 5/10 player and could and probably would veto the trade.

It's really not that ignorant of a statement. Bonds is a terrible teamate(see his personal locker with recliner and big screen in the corner of the lockerroom). Not to mention that the Giants have had to find out everything about his injury this season through MLB.com. Would you really want someone on your team that doesn't associate with anyone ... not even the coach?

Anyway, I really couldn't see any team taking a chance on Bonds. One, he's a former 'roid user so theres no telling what he's going to be like next year without them. Two, he's got arthritis in both knees, and that doesn't go away no matter how much you work or how many surgeries he had. Third, I'm not sure any team wants to add the big ugly face of steroids. Last, whoever wanted him would have to over pay.

I think someone will take a chance on him, probably in the AL, because of the DH and that's where bonds could play.

If he's still has an OBP of over .600 than I believe his teammates wouldn't care. I seriously doubt, that Bonds*, will ever play again, but if he's still a domiant player, why wouldn't a team take a chance on him?

Well, that's what I'm saying ... if if if. How is any team going to know what their getting next year if he doesn't come back this year.

I wouldn't be worried about a 41 year old guy with no knees.
You're joking right? The guy only had an OBP of .609 a Slugging % of .812 and an OPS of 1.422. Nothing to worry about.

Even scarier we wouldn't be able to walk him! Not with Vla behind him.

You can throw out all of his stats because they all reflect his steroid use.

without 'roids, Bonds would have been out of the game 2-3 years ago. Without 'roids, Bonds couldn't carry Griffey's jock strap.

Well Bonds was a great athlete before he started using steroids, but they certainly prolonged his career, and added a ton of power.

Although if he tries to come back at 41, with no knees, and no steroids, I'm not sure if he could carry Bellhorn's jock.

I agree but that's beside the point because he's neevr going to get caught. He would still hit, and he would still play, and the Angels would absoloutly dominate.

Kirk Gibson ring a bell? I know it was one AB, but as a DH, its not like he's goin to have much action outside of trotting around the bases. ;)

Did he use steroids?

If he thought he was never going to get caught then he'd be playing this year. He's had arthritis for years ... these knee injuries are nothing new.

Can you prove he didn't? use them? He definitely qualifies in terms of 'roid rage' with all of his meltdowns and unpredictable mood swings. Nevertheless, whether he did or didn't is besides the point. As long as Barriods is healthy enough to swing the bat (even if they have to get a wheelchair out there and wheel him out to the plate) he's still gonna help the other batters in whatever lineup he's in.

Look at the year Giambi is now having...after an off year, he's producing for the yanks big time, not that he may be playing completely 'clean' instead of using something as yet 'undetectable'.

No I can't.

... Have you ever hit a baseball before? If so you'd know that almost all of your power comes from your legs, so I don't think your wheelchair theory pans out.

I have! it was fun.

anyway, ya, all your strangth comes from your legs, my dad's always telling me to step when i swing to get more power. when i do, i aculy hit it out of the in field

As a matter of fact yes I have, now your turn, you ever hear of figure of speech or an expression? If so, you would understand many statements are not to be taken LITERALLY, but are to be read in between the lines.

The point I'm trying to make is Bonds is not the only player in MLB to have bad knees and still produce, he just happens to be the most high profile at moment. a Bonds that is 40% - 60% is still better than 95% of anything else there. As long as he can still hit and intimidate MLB pitching, he'll have a job.

Bonds at 40%, with no knees, at 41 years old, without steroids, is about as scary as Kevin Millar.

It's your hips too. Without throwing your hip strength in there by rotating, you won't hit the ball. Arms too. As long as you have the fundamentals down and still have some strength overall in your body you can still be a power hitter.

That doesn't matter Bonds wouldn't be the first or the last to come back from a knee injury. I mean jesus Randy Johnson doesn't even have cartilage in his kne anymore and he's still pitching.
