How many of those hits meant anything? Without the HR, you'd have won 7-4.

He was 4 for 5 in the biggest game of the year. End of story.

and without the hit in the 1st the Yanks may not have scored at all. So yes it did matter.

Exactly if he pops up in the first the Yankee probably lose.

You're kidding, right? Sheffield's performance depends on A-Rod, all of a sudden?

If the MVP was decided based on who was the best in this game... give it to Manny or Sheffield.

This game didn't count for more in the standings than any other game.

So you are assuming with a different runner/otu situation, Wakefield throws the same pitch, in the same count, and Sheff reacts the same way? You guys just can't give A-Rod credit huh? If you lost why does it matter who beats you?

I do think Sheffield's at bat goes in a similar fashion. Sheffield fouled off pitch after pitch... Wake then went to his fastball. I think he would've done that regardless.

I can give A-Rod credit... but you act as though this sealed the deal. A-Rod is the anti-clutch. He didn't win the game for his team today like David Ortiz has done constantly. Big Papi has practically carried the Red Sox on his back of late.

? It was the biggest game of the season for both teams. EVERY HIT MEANS SOMETHING.

Does it count any more in the standings than all the game's in which Big Papi has had a walkoff hit for the Red Sox?

A HR, to make it 7-2 or whatever the score was at that point, means nothing when you win the 8-4.

so I guess we can blame all of renteria's errors on our "bad infield"?

Maybe, look i wasnt trying to turn this into a big thing..i did say A-Rod should have had it. But you cant deny that it was pretty fast on that turf-like infield. Errors happen, its part of the game.

face it, A-Rod will never be given credit by SOME people on this board. Thats why I say lets just wait unti the votes are cast. But either way regardless of who wins, both players are deserving so I wont have a problem if Ortiz wins.

I agree with this. I have said all along that ARod should be the MVP, but there is a good argument for both sides. Some Sox fans would never support a Yankee, some Yankee fans would never support a Sox player. That won't change.

Personally, as a fan, the only piece of hardware I care about goes around the finger.

You contradicted yourself in back to back sentences.

Learn the meaning of the word 'contradict'... and then get back to me.

20 of his 47 HR have either tied or gave the go ahead runs. not to mention he leads the majors with 146 RBIs, but yea his game winning hits and such havent stepped up and byeond for his team. get your head checked.

His offense has to make up for his lack of defense. He hasn't done that. Barry Bonds 2001 numbers would, but not this year. A-Rod leads him in too many categories. He hasn't gone above and beyond A-Rod's numbers, meaning he's not MVP. But I really don't care, as long as we win the World Series.

Clutch hitter of the year, maybe. Not MVP.

I seriously doubt any MFY fan will convince anyone here about a-rod. This vote comes down to how much influence the NY media has in convincing other voters that the DH position is some sort of lesser position. This is similar to the same tired arguments they put up in '86 about a pitcher winning MVP when Clemens was with the Sox.

It isn't media bias, nobody is out to get Ortiz. A-Rod has been better, plain and simple. You'd all be fellating Ortiz if he went 4-5 with a homer and double in a clinching game. Be realistic here. Almost every statistic is in Rodriguez' favor, he plays good defense and can run the bases.

You have A-Rod, we have Ortiz and almost EVERYONE here changes their vote.

i also believe that pitchers shouldnt be eligible for MVP, its not like a position player can win Cy Young. But appearantly Clemens' numbers went above and beyond everyone else's in '86.

I have a TON of respect for Ortiz. And I'm a Yankee fan. I also like Manny. But as good as Ortiz has been, I think he lost a bit down the stretch. I'm not saying he choke. He just started playing like a normal human being. And Saturday's game for A-Rod probably put him over the top. I wouldnt be bummed if Ortiz won it. He's a sick SOB at the plate. But I think A-rod will edge him out because of the defense. And what he's done this week.

Ortiz is SICK. That's all there is to it. I think he lost some steam these past couple of weeks though. And A-Rod's 4/5 day, leading the team to the division, will make him the odds on favorite. But win or lose, BOTH of those guys have had incredible seasons. I wont pretend to take anything away from Ortiz when I say I think Arod will win it. Because it's not a question of one guy being good and the other one being a bum. They are both great, and I'd love to have them hitting third and fourth in my lineup. It's hasnt been this close in years. The Sox should have thrown Ortiz at first once in awhile to make it less of a choice. It's not like they had Mattingly playing first all season. But like I said, either way, I can see either of them winning. And I'd be ok with it no matter which way it goes.

I think that A-Rod is a better all around player than Ortiz, but if I'm down to my last out at the end of the game, I'd rather have Ortiz up to bat. Emotionally, Ortiz means way more to his team than A-Rod, and I think that has to be factored in as well. All that being said, I think A-Rod will win the MVP this year because of the DH issue.

Cy Young is not most valuable pitcher, it's best pitcher. That's like saying a hitter shouldn't win MVP because they've got the Silver Slugger or Hank Aaron Award. Pitcher's can be (and often are, in reality) MVP.
