While his words weren't necessarily unkind, David Ortiz was upset at the Fenway Faithful for booing Manny in his first plate appearance in tonight's game.

I won't quote him since I'm sure you can find his interview on several sports news websites. To paraphrase he said that the fans were overreacting to trade "rumors".

I don't think that Big Papi gets what everyone is upset about. The trade rumors aren't the main source of disgruntlement. The failing to step-up and help the team when one of it's key players goes down is the problem.

I personally don't understand how someone "needs" the day off from lolly-gagging in the field and strolling down the base paths.

I think Ortiz's interview made a lot of sense and he certainly brought a "personal touch" to the whole situation, but a rumor is a rumor and apparently it's pretty damn legit and there is no denying that there are problems. Perhaps it was extreme of the fans to boo him, but extreme too is Manny's behavior as of late and I think RS Nation has a right to be upset..

Ortiz has every right to speak his mind.

I'm not suggesting that he doesn't. I just don't think he "gets" it. Most fans aren't upset about Manny wanting to be traded, especially since this isn't the first such request. They are upset about the day off incident, and Ortiz isn't seeing that as the reason.

Neither am I trying to defend the booing. I wouldn't do it if I were there. I believe you support the team on the field. But I do understand why some would.

EXACTLY! you don't understand because you are not him and you have no idea what it is like to be him. "lolly-gagging in the field", it is often said that Manny is the first person at the park, practicing, running and working at his game that he already one of the best at. If he needs a day off, he needs a day off, case closed. You have know idea why he might need a day off, I'm assuming he needs to rest his legs, he's played 90 out of 95 games with sore hamstrings. He could probably really benefit from two days off, which in turn, benefits the team. I would like to see one of the best, if not the best hitter in the American League stay healthy for the entire season. One of the main reasons a team has a bench team is so the starters can get a rest. I understand that we were one short after Nixon's injury, but why not question why Francona didn't bring up another outfielder until Trot gets back. THE BOSTON MEDIA IS DESTROYING THE RED SOX! Fans need to think for themselves and not let these bastards that rely on controversy to warp their thoughts. SHAME ON ALL THE FANS THAT BOOED MANNY FRIDAY, YOU GAVE THE EVIL MEDIA WHAT THEY WANT. and as far as Manny not running out a few ground balls, get over it. this happens .01% of the time, not a bad percentage to deal with for a future Hall of Famer on your team. and if Theo thinks he can do something better with the 20 million a year, i think he is pompous, crazy, wrong and annoying.

I'm starting to think twice a little bit about this trade. Maybe it's because all the trades that have been brought up aren't equal value for the Red Sox, but I'm not so sure now. Manny goes through these little episodes every year and I'm sure this will pass soon. Manny may not hussle sometimes down the line and he may sit there for an hour adimiring a base hit, but his numbers show what he can do.... and we clearly can't replace the guy.

Sox press to unload disruptive Ramirez

Curt Schilling and Manny Ramirez went jaw to jaw -- David Ortiz had to separate them -- after the left fielder refused to play Wednesday.

01:00 AM EDT on Saturday, July 30, 2005

BOSTON -- Spurred by his request to be dealt and, to a lesser extent, by increasing frustration in the clubhouse with his antics, the Red Sox stepped up their efforts yesterday to deal Manny Ramirez, talking trade with at least five major league teams.

Ramirez further alienated himself from teammates and members of the organization when he rebuffed the team's attempt to put him in the lineup Wednesday at Tampa Bay's Tropicana Field after the Sox found themselves short a position player.

Ramirez's insistence that he be given a day off Wednesday as promised, sources indicate, infuriated some teammates and resulted in an angry confrontation between Curt Schilling and Ramirez.

Schilling got into a heated argument with Ramirez and David Ortiz had to step in and separate them.

The Sox talked on-and-off with the New

York Mets yesterday about a complicated three-way deal that also would involve the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. In the deal, the Sox would get outfielder Mike Cameron from the Mets and first baseman/outfielder Aubrey Huff from the Devil Rays while Ramirez would join former teammate and fellow countryman Pedro Martinez with the Mets.

The Devil Rays, meanwhile, would walk away with two of the Mets' better prospects. It's possible the deal could be expanded to include closer Danys Baez going to the Mets.

But an industry source indicated last night that, of the number of deals being discussed for Ramirez, the Mets-Devil Rays scenario was the "least likely" to happen.

It's unclear how much of Ramirez's remaining $64-million salary -- $7 million for the final two months this season and an average of $19 million per season over the next three years -- the Sox would have to eat in order to get the deal done.

The Red Sox and Mets had talked about a deal for Ramirez last December at the winter meetings that would have sent Cliff Floyd -- a former Sox outfielder -- to Boston along with a number of top prospects. The Sox would have then shipped Floyd to the Arizona Diamondbacks for a number of younger players.

But that trade fizzled when the two teams couldn't agree on how much of Ramirez's salary the Mets would be responsible for.

A major league source said at least four other teams -- two in the National League besides the Mets and two more in the American League -- had discussed deals for Ramirez yesterday.

In addition to last December's swap, the Sox twice have attempted to deal Ramirez. First, they placed him on irrevocable waivers in the hopes that another team would take him and be responsible for the rest of his contract. Ramirez, however, went unclaimed.

Later, the Sox were set to include him in one of the biggest deals in baseball history, hoping to send him to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Alex Rodriguez. That trade, too, fell apart when the Sox couldn't convince the players association to allow Rodriguez to give up some back-loaded money in his record-setting $252-million deal.

Months later, Rodriguez was traded to the New York Yankees.

The Los Angeles Dodgers, hit hard by injuries, could be an interested suitor for Ramirez. But they would likely insist on the Sox taking back a similarly outsized contract, such as that of outfielder J.D. Drew or pitcher Odalis Perez

I will not be an apologist for Manny. For all his millions, the team needed him and he said "No". That says alot about him as a person.

uhhh... they didn't need him. they won.

he needed the day off so he could continue to be the best player on the team.

looks like Schilling is breaking up the team. he's the selfish one, he should respect Manny's need for a day off and trust that he really needed it.

That's not the point. He's apparently selfish, and overpaid.

derajmd, uhhh you really dont know anything. The time he asked Manny was like ater the game ended, and this was around 11 pm. They didnt know at the time he wouldve been placed on the DL, and Tito had to play Millar and either called up players Stern or Hyzdu. Dont even start going blaming Tito for that, because thats not his job to find a replacement, its Theo's job to do so! Im not sure if you're reading the papers or anything but Sox through tomorrow are looking for a replacement for Trot that would be included in a packaged trade.

The Red Sox without Manny will not make the playoffs. David's numbers will also be hurt because he'll have no protection.

Huff? Cameron? Give me a break.

According to ESPN the Manny deal is too complicated to get done before tomorrow. Thank GOD.

you know that you could just press the quote button, you don't have to re-type the persons message you are quoting.

Ortiz was confused. He thinks everyone is booing Manny 'cause of the trade rumors. Obviously not. Same with Millar. Everyone is booing him 'cause he didn't step up when the team needed him. Geeez.

He shows up early to take extra BP, and that's it. He's not shagging extra fly balls. If he practices so hard maybe he ought to quit, because he plays in the field like it's the company picnic softball game.

I understand that we were one short after Nixon's injury
But you don't seem to understand what it means to turn your back on your teammates when asked to help them in a pinch. And the fact that we won the game is irrelevant. The damage was already done when he said "no".

0.01% is only 1 in 10,000, and since Manny has made only 4,000 outs in his career, then by your logic, he wouldn't have even done it once yet. I'd say it's more like 30% of ground ball outs that he doesn't run it out. Now, that may change for a little while because of the play against the Rays where he was safe on a bad throw.

Look, I don't want to see Manny go. He's one of my favorite players of all time, but that doesn't mean I should not be critical of the way he plays the game or how he turns his back on the team.

When will you guys realise that Manny is not the problem with this team? Pitching is the problem and Theo should be focussing on that.

Without Manny this team would not be in first place by 2.5 games right now. Manny has a "Manny Moment" a few times a year. So what? He certainly wins us far more games than he loses us.

To put it real simple so some of you will understand: This team will not be as good if they trade Manny. Four marginal players cannot fill his shoes in the lineup. And don't even bring up the Nomar trade as an example. He was hurt all year last year. Manny this year is only leading the league in home runs and RBI.

I hate this time of year in Boston. It a perfect storm of media whipping the fans up into frenzy over some minor ******** thing then shipping a star out of town. Gee that's never happened before.

I don't know what ortiz said but he isnt of the caliber that whatever he says doesnt mater, it can still hurt him and his contract and potentally his playing time
Ahhh. The shitlist for Red Sox fans grows longer and longer. How long until Papi becomes a "cancer" in the clubhouse.

Fools.

You're right. These people don't know what they're talking about. Manny is not a clubhouse cancer. The team loves each other - there is no cancer!

Amen. Last year's Nomar deal was huge, shocking, but it MADE SENSE. Trading Manny and prospects for inferior players so the rest of our team can suffer? That's sheer stupidity.

Good lord does it really matter we were playing Tampa Bay and we won, If Adam Stern is so bad that Francona cant put him in the lineup to spell Manny for a game or two, whats the point of him being on the big club
