somebody just told me that he heard on weei manny has gone to the front office and requested a trade. Thoughts?

I personally think its all the radio medias fault. I've been listening a lot lately and they keep making fun of him because of that scoreboard thing.

I think the story actually appears to be accurate; Tom Verducci (SI) might know more about it.

My toaster picks up some radio stations; I'll let you know if I hear anything. ;)

that is really not making sense--yes manny wants a trade cuz people are making fun of him for going into the scoreboard ?? now that be a dull reason if true. the sox need manny, a 1 -2 punch of ortiz and manny is like no other in all baseball. Manny is hear to stay otherwise because he really does have a love for the Boston Red Sox and the fans

Tom Verducci's 8/1 article in SI says that Manny wants out! Ah, timing is everything.....I wonder how long Theo has known about this (not that he could really unload him). Could he?

Hey this is another crazy thought,Manny made Ortiz here he helped Ortiz so if you take Manny Out,how would you think Ortiz would feel?Manny I think wants to be a Sox,hes not a Nomar Garrcicappa who fakes injurys beacuse he dont want to play here.

Aah, SI a wonderful history magazine.

why don't you post a pic of your toaster and maybe we'll hear it!

I'm kidding, darling, don't take it personally. :) I got it in Roswell.

There's another thread in the "Talk Sox" section, and in it there's a link to the reported story that will be run in the 8/1 edition of "SI", by none other than Verducci, who last I hear, is on the radio talking about this...

EDIT: Is a shot at Nomar really necessary?

its a legit rumor

According to Tom Verducci in the August 1 issue of Sports Illustrated, Manny Ramirez has asked to be traded from the Red Sox. Verducci writes "Manny Ramirez wants out of Boston. Again. The Red Sox leftfielder has asked to be traded for at least the third time in the past four seasons. He told team officials he is unhappy in Boston, particularly with his lack of privacy off the field. The Red Sox have no intention of trading Ramirez (.277, 27 homers, 90 RBIs) -- not during the season, anyway. They could field offers in the off-season for Ramirez, who is due $57 million over the next three years.

"Boston has learned to live with Ramirez's moods in order to keep his bat. He asked to be traded in spring training 2002, and again after the '03 season. However, when Boston agreed in principle to trade Ramirez to Texas as part of the ill-fated Alex Rodriguez deal, Ramirez telephoned owner John Henry late one night pleading to stay."

Nono, I didn't mean to imply that Ramirez was going THERE, if anywhere. Take the comment at face value here. Distractions are everywhere in a big sporting market. Just play the game.

It strikes me as strange that in the Boston.com article he was quoted as wanting to just "have fun" before he retires. Whether he is hindered from this "fun" at Boston or not, I'd be surprised if he could find a clubhouse that would be as much fun (with all his manny antics and such). Where does he think he'll find a team that will let him have as much fun? not to mention, accomodate his salary..

Oakland is pretty fun...oh wait, that was before I caught the salary accommodation part. (No, it's not a slight at the A's, it's just how Beane runs the place.)

He can ask out all he wants...name one team that will take his 3 years salary remaining?? Just hit the ball Manny you ain't goin nowhere

The New York Mets.

I read a while back that the Mets coveted his run production ability and were interested in him last offseason (and were also looking at Sosa) and still are. Not to say the Red Sox might have to eat some of his salary (or take on an undesirable contract, ala, Tom Glavine) but the Red Sox could move Ramirez. The problem is they'd have to eat part of his contract or take someone else's bad contract to make it work.

If that's the case, I'm not sure it benefits the Sox to trade him.

I don't think Ramirez's performance would be called into question, but as far as the Mets needing run production - WHERE'S BELTRAN? Lost in all the Yankees disaster this season, he has flown under the radar, whereas Rodriguez was practically buried last year, despite outperforming Beltran in his first season in the Big Apple.

The Mets front-office has to string together something that is fiscally feasible (lest they actually DO turn into their town rivals) AND have the performance goods to back it up.
