ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The pride of Hyde Park, 23-year-old Manny Delcarmen, is expected here tonight to begin his major league career by helping out the Red Sox' needy bullpen.

*****Delcarmen, who pitched two-thirds of an inning in Triple-A Pawtucket's 7-5 victory yesterday at McCoy Stadium, is expected to fly south this morning and be at Tropicana Field in time for tonight's game, according to a Red Sox source. A corresponding roster move has not been made but John Halama, Jeremi Gonzalez or Adam Hyzdu are the top three candidates for demotion.

Delcarmen, who began his season in Portland, has struck out 14 with four walks in 9 2/3 innings for the PawSox. He will be asked to lend a needed hand for a bullpen that has struggled mightily this season, especially Alan Embree - who was released - and Keith Foulke - who is on the disabled list.

*****The length of Delcarmen's stay will be determined by the ballclub's needs, which could include showcasing him for a possible trade.

just saw this on boston.com, very exciting to hear. With Delcarmen coming up, wonder who will get the boot back to the minors since delcarmen is another righty in the bullpen.

Delcarmen to make major move

Hyde Park native joins team today

Manny Delcarmen, the righthanded reliever from Hyde Park with the mid-90s fastball and dynamic 12-to-6 curveball, was in Boston last night preparing to fly out this morning to join the Red Sox for his first stint in the majors. The 23-year-old Delcarmen, who in 2000 became the first player selected out of a Boston high school by a major league team in 34 years, was recently promoted from Double A Portland to Triple A Pawtucket. In six appearances with the PawSox Delcarmen pitched nine innings, striking out 12 and walking four while compiling a 3.00 ERA. Delcarmen's recall will be made official today.

I'm really excited about this. Love to see the young kids get a chance to prove themselves. This guy pitched pretty well in the minors this season. With Tampa Bay on tap the next couple days, I wouldn't be surprised to see him in a game sooner rather than later

Manny had 14 K's in only 9.2 innings at Pawtucket. He did allow 9 hits and walked 4 batters (a 1.44 WHIP) but he's got the stuff to dominate.

delcarmen will be activated tues. or wed.....Is it not odd that the Red Sox would announce a call-up a day or two in advance, thereby making a few guys in the bullpen wonder if they are lame ducks? could be because a trade has been made...3 going out, 2 coming in or something?

I thought Manny D would stay at AAA to fine tune his control issues a little. I think he has a bright future ...I am excited to see his stuff in the ML, and no better game to bring him up than vs Tampa

I got a report on the game last night I didn't understand why he got the quick hook. He stikes out the first guy throwing 94, strikes out the second guy throwing 95-96, then gives up a first pitch hit on a 96 mph fastball and gets pulled. It kinda makes sense now, I guess they wanted him fresh for his call up.

Delcarmen barely has had a cup of coffee in triple A. They've already ruined Meredith by rushing him up, now this.

They gotta start sometime....not all work out right away but some can really contribute. I would say Delcarmen has better stuff than Meredith though. From what I understand Meredith was brought up because of a funky delivery?? I'm not sure cause I never saw the guy but thats not a great reason to bring someone to the show. At least Delcarmen has the heat and good stats at AAA to give it a go. They probably want to see him before the deadline to help determine what moves to pull the trigger on.

Yes, they can call him back up, but he's contributing right now more than Hyzdu for instance, so I don't think it will be Gonzalez sent down. Either way, I'm really looking forward to tuning in tonight to see Delcarmen. :)

Yes, Meredith has been ruined, and so has Miguel Caberra. Oh my god, they did rush him from double A right? No, you can't do that, their too fragile to handle the promotions. After all it's every minor leaguers dream to get up to AAA and wait there. It's too much pressure to handle to jump, let's just baby them until their 27, then we can call him up. That makes sense doesn't it.

Agreed, if he's a stud let's find out. He did fine in AAA , so let's see what he got. Or are we all supposed to sit around and say someday these guys are going to great. As passionate fans, we tend to overate our minor players, so let's see what he's got.

Excellent job in his first major league appearance. His performance may be lost a bit in such an eventful game. The poise he showed during the game came was mirrored by his post game interview. He seems like a nice young man ...Great to see a rookie step out of OUR bull pen and throw 94 mph. 1-2-3 inning in a pressure situation. I can't wait to see more of the guy. I think the Duquette depletion years are behind us. Love the boys we have now and love the boys we have coming.

Good showing and he isn't our top pitching prospect....i hear from some people he is more like our 4th behind Papelbon, Lester, and Sanchez....then we have to see what Hansen looks like too. It was only the Devil Rays but if thats how our young guys look....gooood times

It was the Devil Rays and it was his first outing. Just like we'd be saying "don't worry about it" if he had a bad first outing, we need to take last night for what it was:

A great debut. Hopefully it'll cause some confidence in the kid and he can continue to pitch well in relief for the Boston Red Sox.

What I liked about the kid was that he threw strikes. Yes, he worked some deep counts, but he threw strikes when he absolutely had to, and that impressed me.

Also his outing turned out to be VERY important in this game. If John Olerud was a LITTLE bit faster, we could have been talking about Manny's first win as a Boston Red Sox. Keeping his team in the game when they're down by only 2 was HUGE last night. If he came in and got lit up last night could have had a much worse outcome.

Welcome to Boston Manny.

Now is the time to put some distance between us and the Yankees. Their pitching woes are much worse than ours. A good winning streak is in order.

I was at the game last night, sitting down the left field line near the Sox bullpen. I got to watch him warm up, and let me tell you, this kid throws smoke. Let's not get too excited about putting down the Ray's 7-8-9 hitters in order. That being said, he showed good command of his pitches, and his FB/Change differential is enough to tie hitters in knots. He hit 95 on the gun with some gas and followed it up with a 76 mph change. It was an impressive first outing.
