wow. This team is just one shock after another. Jay's played his final game in a Red Sox uniform, and I can't say this makes me happy just yet. I'd like to see how this progresses, but I can't possibly believe that they are willing to just let Jay Payton become a free agent. He's got a lot of talent and they could certainly get SOMETHING for him..... Designating him puts a 10 day deadline on dealing him or losing him.

It'll be nice for Jay if he finds a place where he can play, but holy crap.... the team seems to be putting things in motion.

Stay tuned indeed.

I'm glad for Payton. I think he came in and played and handled things professionally. He is after all set to be a free agent and at the peak of his career. Not having the opportunity to start for half a season cost him a chance to show a team what he can do and he now gets a chance to show his skills.

I could see him going to one of those teams that are looking at Preston Wilson/Mark Kotsay (except for the Yankees of course.) So maybe the Cubs or the Nationals. Another possible destination might be Cleveland who could use another vetran bat in the middle of the line up and has one of the deepest bullpens in the league to go and get it with.

I've read that the Sox would only trade Payton IF they have another fourth OF option lined up for sure.... whoever we get should be a pretty good player. Thanks for your time in Boston, Jay, I loved watching you play. Everytime I see Randy Johnson throw a pitch for some reason I think of your HR over the Green Monster earlier this year.

Bradford's not a bad guy to add to the bullpen if this deal goes down as reported by ESPN. It seems like a HUGE risk though considering Bradford just had back surgery and last year was by FAR is worst season in the big leagues. He has kind of a submarine type delivery (ala BK Kim) and dominates righties but has troubles with lefties. He seems like a situational type guy who can get key righties out (and then Myers could be brought in for lefties) late in games. This guy is certainly not a closer type pitcher, so Mike Timlin or Curt Schilling would still have to fill that role.

Seems like we could have gotten more for Jay Payton than a 30 year old situational righty coming off back surgery-- but I'll wait to pass judgement until something's officially announced.

Sean McAdam today is reporting that the Payton move had been planned for some time, but that the Red Sox needed to wait for Bradford to come off the DL. Payton forced the Red Sox hand on Wednesday night when he blew up at Tito in the dugout after being inserted as a defensive replacement for Damon in the sixth spot in the order (Millar's spot) with Olerud, a defensive replacement for Millar, going into the game in Damon's spot.

Given the situation, it sounds like the team handled things right by DFAing Payton rather than keep him around the clubhouse while waiting for Bradford to get off the DL I could see one of the old regime making this thing into a bigger deal than it really is by keeping Payton around and either not playing him or doing something equally insulting to show him that they hold all the cards. Theo got Payton out of their before the press even had the story and did what is right for everyone all around. I think it's indicative of a gigantic difference in the way this team is run compared to teams of the past.

With Myers and Bradford the Sox will have a lefty-righty one/two punch if the major leagues ever decides to abolish overhand pitching.

If Bradford is back to his old self...he is a good pitcher....but I said the same thing about Matt Mantei....these guys coming off injuries make me nervous

And Mantei was a dominant closer before getting injured, and he just couldn't get the job done for the Sox. Obviously people are different and we can't say that Braford can't come back because Mantei didn't, but this helps put things into perspective....

A healthy Chad Bradford is at best a situational righthanded reliever. He is not the savior of this bullpen. I wonder if Jay Payton pushing the Sox to trade him killed the Sox on the trade market. This just doesn't seem like they're getting enough value back for a quality player.

Kapler's been deactivated from the Japanese team, and hasn't played in a month. He's currently batting .154, but I do see Kapler returning to the Sox soon.

The Payton situation was resolved when he snapped on Tito after losing an at bat in Texas, his luggage was removed from the plane, and he was DFA the next day. I'm sure that was the final straw.

um edgar in the outfield??? that wouldnt be a smart idea at all, no offense, edagr is an infield type of guy really. besides with gabe kapler coming back possibly, i see adam stern being sent back to pawtucket. and if uanble to get damon back. it be kapler and stern next spring goin for the center field spot, with the latter getting the backup spot. trust you anything dude, edgar in center field is on nobodys minds for next spring. i like asam sterns speed very much so, his stolen base in his first career game was top notch. pitcher even had him in the corner of his eye and he took off, johnny damon speed, even before that he was able to beat out the double play. i got high hopes for this one

im a big fan of kevin millar's. however i am too gettin annoyed he has to hop on the radio when rumors are being tossed around, his playing time, etc. basically trying to act like hes the team's voice... i heard trade rumors of him to the astros, wouldnt mind them getting in return chad qualls a relief pitcher, in 40 games has a nice ERA of 3.95, and with 9 walks/32 strikeouts--i mentioned him moreso cuz he is in last year of his contract

So you're the one. I have to ask this, because I am really curious: What in the world is there to LIKE about Kevin Millar?

He can't run, hit, field, or throw.
