Kevin Millar is very simply WAY OUT OF LINE here. The Red Sox have been TOO patient with him. The only qualified first baseman who has fewer homeruns than Kevin Millar is Sean Casey. The only two who have lower OPS: Phil Nevin and Eric Hinske, both of which have higher slugging percentages. Kevin Millar isn't even in the top 20 offensive first baseman in the big leagues. For a team who considers themselves a contender, they're giving away at bats by having someone so awful hit so often. Kevin Millar should be greatful that he's still allowed to wear the uniform, let alone all those ABs they waste on him.

Great point, I agree with you 100%, his slugging is around .373 which is awfully pathetic for a 1B. Jon Olerud told Gammons that he feels like the 2001 Olerud, which bodes good for the Red Sox.

Side Note: What the f*** are we going to get for Millar, he couldn't net us a used condom from Micheal Jackson. I heard we looked into a deal from the 'Stros but they wouldn't give up anything, and now they wouldn't even give up that nobody, because Berkman is playing 1st.

You'd never know that the Sox were a season high 4 games in first place by reading talksox or the newspapers. Jeeeeeeeeez people. Calm down.

There is no reason to hate our players as much as you guys do.

Let's see, people you all would hate if they saved the world.

Kevin Millar

Keith Foulke

Allen Embree

Matt Mantia

Mark Bellhorn

And yet scrubs/backups like Youkilis, Jay Payton, Kapler and Dave Roberts you all love.

I can't remember where I heard it or read it, but someone said the other day "It seems the Red Sox players have more fun than their fans do."

So true. :thumbdown

Another excellent point

If nobody would give up anything for Millar or Bellhorn....why are they on our team if they are that worthless....god these two give me a rash....another great game by the two of them against the Os when we needed guys to step up with our big bats having a night off

I didn't catch the whole game tonight... but I was able to see Millar bat once, and it was UGLY! (a strikeout) If hes complaining about his role...HOW ABOUT STEP UP WHEN YOU GET THE CHANCE TO PLAY! If hes being brash about it, we should release him and not have to worry about him ever again, because nobody would give up anything for Millar, so why watse time shopping him around...

I can see it now...

*Theo is on the phone with the Brewers (just a team mentioned here)*

"Yeah, this is Theo Epstein...I'm looking for someone interetsed in a trade for Kevin Millar. Would you be that GM?"

"Sure...you can have our concession stand guy...we need a new one anyway"

LOL

Crazy idea: Deal Millar, use Ortiz at 1B and Youk at DH? Just throwing out ideas early in the morning.

Tex,

I'm all for Ortiz at first, and we could get a better bat for DH, but Youk could fill in from time to time. With Youk able to play first and third, you could even spell Mueller by DHing him once in a while, and have David play there sometimes too.

This team SOOO does not need Millar. The Red Sox are only 3 games up on the Orioles, 3.5 up on the Yankees. Anyone who thinks that lead is safe is fooling themselves.

The Red Sox need production from first base.

From the Boston Globe - Red Sox Notebook

Kevin Millar denied an ESPN report that he had asked the Sox for a trade. Millar said that while he would not be surprised at a trade - "you hear that kind of talk every year at this time" - he said he had not asked to be dealt. "Play baseball, ready to go, its time to roll," Millar said. "We're [three] games up. We're not talking about me right now. I didnt say s***. I ain't going to say s***, so you guys are searching for something I'm not going to say right now. I'm just enjoying baseball. I'm happy."

Today's Boston Herald has a story in which Millar denies ever saying that. I wish they would trade Millar. There is only one team in the majors (Red Sox) who would routinely start Millar over Olerud. Olerud is a better hitter than Millar and a far better fielder. It's a joke that Francoma won't start Olerud every game for an overweight, underachieving player like Millar.

This is very true. Apparently the Red Sox TRIED to trade him, and had only one team with interest: the Astros, who had lukewarm interest. Now that they're playing Berkman at first, that lukewarm interest has turned to no interest.

Who in their right mind would want an overweight first baseman making $3 mil a year who can't hit, field, throw, run, or keep his mouth shut?

It's a sad day when the Red Sox are forced into letting a productive player (Payton) walk away when they could have been playing him everyday instead of fatass.

Is it too late to get that Michael Jackson used condom for Millar?

A lot of people seemed to think Bellhorn will get less placing time with Cora available now.

Anyone who thinks that is wrong. Cora was brought in to replace Vazquez as the utility infielder. He'll get starts now and then, but he's no replacement for Bellhorn.

I think he's worse than Bellhorn. (Yes I realize I just said that, but he's been slumping lately.) But, maybe all the trade talk is affecting him.

I agree 100%. I've been saying for what feels like months now that although Bellhorn takes all the heat, he's BETTER than Millar.

and about Millar to Houston for Chad Qualls? Sounds like a good deal to me. We've got a logjam at first and no relief pitching. Qualls has been very good to date, and he's young (26) to boot.

Sorry, but Houston turned that deal down, because Berkman is playing 1st.

And they should turn it down. Right now, like you said, Millar's not worth a damn thing. I was just responding to the rumor someone else brought to the thread.

Posted
theres currently a rumored trade deal that would be a 3 team deal of sox-mets-astros, more importantly that mets scouts were seen at yesterdays sox game looking at kevin millar play. article stated sox are looking at the astros reliever chad qualls who having a nice season, ERA of 3.89

I havent heard they completely turned it down because Berkman could move back to the outfield considering they have a hole there.

Why?

Berkman's value is maximized at first so he doesn't hurt that knee again.

Posted
So what will they do with him when Bagwell returns at some point...put him in the outfield??

Bagwell is out for the season, and it's questionable whether or not he'll EVER come back to baseball. The Astros need a long term solution at first, why not Berkman?

Oops, I mean why not Millar? Yeah, that's it. Kevin's perfect for the Astros.....

sarcasm aside, Berkman's probably Houston's best long term solution at first.

The only serious interest anyone could have in Millar is because he's so awful right now, they believe they can get him for a bargain cost, AND have the Sox pay most of his contract. If you can get him for almost nothing, and you're the Astros or Mets, he's worth a shot. He's bound to get hot sometime, at which point they can ride it out and let him walk at the end of the year.

Posted
He's bound to get hot. Exactly. Leave him put.

This team can't afford to wait for him to get hot. Then what happens after he cools off (which is inevitable)? You know he's going to be an easy out down the stretch and in the playoffs.
