Yesterday the Mariner's designated Boone for assignment? Should he be on the Sox radar? His batting avg, hr's and rbi's are better than Bellhorn's and Boone's a former gold glove winner. In the late innings, the Sox could have three gold-glovers in the infield (Renteria, Boone and Olerud).

Personally, I think he'd be great to have on the team to replace Vazquez who is now down in Pawtucket if he came fairly cheaply. Of course, I imagine that he'd rather go someplace to play everyday. Bellhorn's got the better OBP, but only because of the walks. So they could give Bellhorn a day off against pitchers who tend to throw a lot of strikes and not walk a lot of people.

At the very least, it should spark some discussion.

Bret Boone would be a great player on the Red Sox...

Actually this might work to one advantage......if Boone was brought in at least he would push Bellhorn. I don't necessarily want Boone to be a replacement but if he showed up Bellhorn might need to get his act together and play a little better....it might be what he needs. Besides pitching, the Sox could use an upgrade for the right side of their infield. Millar started playing better when Meintkesidnfksn showed up and is playing a little better with Johnny "Helmet" Olerud around....maybe Bellboy needs to the same thing

Having watched Boonie in Seattle for the last 6-7 years at Safeco I predict he would help the Sox tremendously given the chance because the guy has heart besides a great glove. He has been in a slump lately but he is a class act and besides I am coming in September for a game and would love to see him play at least once more. Selfish I know

He does seem like he'd fit in with the club character-wise with Nixon, Mueller and even Bellhorn. After watching tonight's game, getting Boone for the bench would be a luxury, but certainly shouldn't be a priority. (As great as he was last year, logic would seem to day you don't want to have a closer whose last name rhymes with choke.)

Though Cano is holding down 2B in the Bronx, I could actually see a swap of wayward 2B happening with Womack going to Seattle (sort of the way the Yanks exchanged scrap for scrap in the Quantrill deal.) The Yankees might actually benefit from having a guy like Boone in the clubhouse. Though of course that's all speculation.

No.

Exactly. I sew him play in Seattle. You do not want this guy on your team if you are in the playoff race. He can only hurt a team now, not make it better. And he has a big salary. No. No. No.

He certainly is not a priority but we do need to upgrade the right side of our infield.....not sure he is the answer but he has experience and a decent bat when he gets hot......he wouldn't be my first choice as an infield BACKUP.......lets remember that nobody is going to lose there job....except for the guys in the bullpen.

Soxie, I think we're all familiar with your opinion on our second base position....

The thing is, I agree with you. Bret Boone at $7 million (I think that's his salary) is absolutely not worth it. He's a solid player, but that's just way too much money. If he gets released and can come for the MLB minimum, than it can't hurt to give him a look. BUT, wouldn't the team be better served with a Pokey-Reese like player who can help you in a pinch at multiple positions? Boone can really only play second base at this point in his career.

Also, there are so many more teams who need Boone MORE than the Sox do. The Yankees, Mets, and Padres are 3 teams I can think of off the top of my head. ONE of those teams could take a chance on him and make the trade, and I don't see the Sox doing that.

I don't honestly think Bret Boone is the answer for the Sox. As bad as Bellhorn may seem, he really isn't the problem on this team. If we had a better bullpen, we'd be walking away from the competiton in the AL East right now.

good point......and Boone won the AL Gold Glove 2004, 2003, 2002 and NL Gold Glove in 1998.....its just that he is past his peak but I still think he might help....have Olerud and Boone take over the right side of our infield....lol kinda strange.

yeah, but it was Aaron... not Bret. They seem like 2 different guys, dont even look alike and thanks to aaron we got to have the biggest comeback in history and humiliate the yankees and sweep the best team in baseball. who knows, thigns could of been way different. Aaron maybe did us a favor instead of us going against the marlins, likely losing, our team ebing way different and actually getting arod, and us going nowhere last year.

The Globe today notes that the Red Sox are the only team in baseball whose starting second baseman has a lower average than Boone. And I understand that Theo and the rest of the front office understands that piece of trivia is just that, trivial. Bellhorn does a lot more than his stats say. But he is also a liability in someway (K's being a huge one) and he plays one of the only positions on the team where we don't have a viable back up (Francona lists Youkilis asthe back up second baseman.) The way I'm looking at it is not comparing Boone to Bellhorn but Boone to Vazquez. I think Boone could help this team if he is willing to come into a place and accept a reduced role for half a season. It's not a necessary move, but sometimes those are among the best. Few people saw getting Dave Roberts as a move that made a whole lot of sense last year until the playoffs.

Tek4pres, very good post. I want to think of it in a Cabrera type of way. Nomar was doing alright, then we went and got Cabrera who everyone thought was an under performing crappy player then looked what he went on to do. He became a fan favorite. I think boone could be the same way. Put him on our team, a team that is competing and has a large fanbase and sells out every game, and he could perform great. Just look, he was awesome in 03 when the mariners were good, then 04 the mariners sucked, he went down, this year they suck more and he was down again.

If we made this move we might be able to turn around and trade Bellhorn for some relief pitching?? and if you say nobody would give up anything for Bellhorn then what the hell is he doing on this team.

Screw it lets just trade Bellhorn, Embree, and Foulke for Boone, Hasegawa, and Guardado.....yeah I dont think they will go for it either

I'm pretty sure right now that boone will go to the yanks.

Really? Is Bret Boone better then Robinson Cano?

Please don't tell me you were serious when you said this, cause this is the worst idea I've ever read.

And for you Bellhorn bashers

Boone is a -3 FRAA (which means he is below average in the field)

OPS is a paltry .685

Bellhorn is a 0 FRAA (which means he is average)

Let's also remember that Renteria would suffer because he'd have to get used to a new DP partner

He's OBP is better at .722

Plus his salary is a lot lower

Boone was quoted in an interview with ESPN saying, "There was no anger. It was kind of sad," Boone said. "Once it happened, I went home. I just wanted to collect myself and watch and think about what happened. I want to go get a fresh start somewhere. I want to win."

He added that he wants to go to a team where he'll be an everyday player.

Unfortunately I dont think that boon or Bellhorn if traded anywhere, are a starter caliber. Maybe we need a new second baseman emphasis on MAYBE, but Brett Boone is not the answer. We might get lucky if we picked him up but that is way too much money to be paying for luck if you ask me. :thumbdown

 V-TEK ROCKS!!!!!!
