with johnny possibly out next season, wouldnt mind at all seeing jay payton take over startin center field. sure jay might not have the hair or the speed, but hes got this character that just spells out red sox. weve only seen him so far start several games and come in as backups. like to see how it would be with him startin each game

Youks or Olerud, but I'll say Youks, Youks has been big for us all season and the more playing time he gets the quicker he develops at a player. Where to play him though is a different story to itself.

Yeah... I made this thread, yet I didnt even decide... wow. But anyways, I say Youks. Like Stocker said, hes been big all year, and he can offer a lot more than Payton and Olerud can offer.

Olerud has put up some pretty filthy numbers off the bench, but my bias will make me vote for Youk, as he always seems to come up in the clutch...but so does Olerud...AHHHHHH. It must be nice for Francona to have too many people worthy of starting.

The fact that Olerud has been very good off the bench kind of makes me want to keep him there. If I'm Terry Francona, I love having his lefthanded bat (and great defense at first base) on the bench, ready to hit WHENEVER I see fit.

I also love having someone like Jay Payton available. He has the speed to take the extra base, plays good outfield defense-- It's really too bad that he doesn't embrace the role because he's perfect at it.

I think Youk makes the MOST sense as a starter because just like a Bellhorn type guy, he can make the opposing pitcher work. He's more valuable to the team as a starter because of his patience. Also, it always seems like good things happen when he's in the lineup.

Someone else mentioned the question of WHERE Youkilis plays, and it's obvious that there isn't a clear-cut position for him this year. I'm thinking he should start twice (or so) a week to give him more experience and also rest Mueller's knees. We need him healthy in September. Also, Youk can play SOME first, although that position is also loaded with Olerud and Millar.

In short-- I think that right now ALL three of these fellas really belongs on the bench. That's their best purpose to the team. They are all very valuable in their own ways, but are behind very talented guys.

I'm glad we've got all three guys up and healthy-- it really has us covered in case of injury (Except at the middle infield position, which Vazquez could cover).

I voted Youkilis

That's a really tough question. I like seeing Payton play, but not necessarily everyday. I really like having Mueller at 3rd, so I'm going to have to go with Olerud. First base is the position of those three that needs to most improvement as far as the starters for each position goes.

I like having Olerud off the bench good consistant bat when needed great pinch hitter plus I don't think he has the legs to play every day, I like our outfield as is with Payton platooning with Trot. I love Mueller but I would love to see Youk play every day because the guy hits the ball hard plus it gets him more big league expierience.

Youkilis. The kid has proven over the last year and a half that he's the real deal. He's got all the tools of a strong middle of the order hitter. Also he's young and can only get better, but not if he's sitting on the pine.

was it just me but did you see a number of our boys when they went for the ball were bobbling it?? like jay payton, manny couple of times, bellhorn with that play in the 9th that couldve tagged out the runner at 2nd base

I saw it too (I was there) they're jsut throwing the ball around like maniacs out there, mainly Payton throwing home twice when he clearly had no chance. Allowing the hitter to go to second which does lead to runs.
