He's quoted on Redsox.com (see above) that he would like to "improve internally", so maybe that means he's going to shakup the roster a bit? Just a thought.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of obvious names out on the market, but I imagine Theo's looking for a first baseman, bullpen help, and perhaps another starter?

I wouldn't mind if they moved Manny on. That would free up a lot of money. As great as he is and as much as he's done for us in providing a championship, that's just way too much money. I still don't know who could possibly take it on (maybe the Mets?), but it would be intriguing.

By the way, if the Mets would consider Manny, I would love to take David Wright off their hands. That kid is one of my favorite players.

um we have like 3 first basemen. that's doubtful. we just need pitching. and I have an odd feeling about Manny and that they may try and load him off on someone again.

I don't think the team sees Olerud as an everyday player, Millar is really sucking, and it seems that the Sox aren't committed to Youkilis as an everyday man yet either. A stopgap 1B is not completely out of the question IMO.

I agree with The Mr. Good ( ). Sean Casey has been discussed as an option, but I'd prefer we didn't do that.

I too wouldn't mind seeing Manny go. he's way too expensive.

Finally some people who agree with me on Manny. I've been saying for years that I'd like to see Ramirez go. I still hate how slow he is on the basepaths, how he doesn't run out ground balls, and how bad he is on defense. He's always been an incredible hitter, but that money could really be used to strengthen this team in multiple areas.

The problem with moving Manny right now is that he's in a season long slump. Opposing GMs have got to worry about what might be causing it, and as a result is value might be down.

The Mets are probably one of a few teams who could actually afford his contract, and who might be willing to take it on. The problem with sending him there would be that the Mets already have three outfielders: Cameron, Beltran, and Floyd... all of which are playing well.

Might it make sense to take on Cameron in a potential deal, lessening the financial impact on NY while givins us an instant replacement OF?

That is something I wouldn't mind, and even putting Cameron back in center and shifting Johnny to left (where his poor arm wouldn't hurt us as much). That's not a bad idea actually.

That could work. I'd still rather take Wright though, move Youk to 1st and ship Mueller and Millar out.

Sure, who wouldn't-- but I don't think the Mets are interested in parting with David Wright for the very same reasons you'd love to see him in a Red Sox uniform.

I guess my idea was a little more.... realistic.

You think the Mets would take Millar too? Minky's hitting .208.

I'd love to see Millar shipped out, and I wouldn't mind seeing Youk play a lot more. I really do like Mueller, and his .390 OBP (he walks more than he strikes out), he is limited with what he can do offensively.

I just don't see Wright being traded from the Mets.

i cant believe how many of you would "dump" manny if someone would take him on. yea his .250 average is not helping the situation but it will go back up. facing manram and papi back to back is as bad as it can get for any opposing pitcher. there is nobody you could bring in to replace those numbers he puts up every year. very consistent. .300, 40, 130.

The bottom line is though that Manny's just ONE player. Teams have survived the loss of a superstar and actually teams like Texas actually get better. Manny can hit, but that's ALL he can do. I'd much rather have a well-rounded alternative.

if this was texas yes, unload his $20 mill salary, but we have plenty of money to keep him around and fill in the other holes this team has. at least untill his last year of this deal. then maybe get something for him that last year instead of letting him walk

Interesting names (not necessarily for Sox but for everyone): B.J. Ryan, Paul Konerko, Rafael Furcal, A.J. Burnett, Nomar Garciaparra and Billy Wagner.

The first website needs to be update. Carpenter is no longer on the market and some of those guys have been traded to new teams, released, etc.

manny is one player that hits 300, 40, 130. i dont want to "survive" without him. i want to kill the yankees and o's and win the division the next 3 years

Vegassoxfan, I agree with you... but nobody else seems to. We will end up eating a huge chunk of Manny's salary regardless of where he goes and Mike Cameron is NOT that good a player. Money is not a problem for this team right now. We CUT salary from last year. I'm okay with them shopping Manny at the end of the season, if need be. But not now. He solidifies the center of our line up and is bound to bust out soon. You don't just drop last years world series MVP, lose the ace of your staff, and assume that we'll be able to get to the same spot as we did last year. It just doesn't happen that way very often. I too want to kill the yankees and o's and win the division the next 3 years and I think Manny is the best way to go with that. If we lost manny we would no longer have the best offense in baseball (in theory) unless we got, say, helton or someone like that to replace the spot in the lineup. I say wait it out, but don't expect any team to take Manny or Theo to be dealing manny at this point. I just don't see it happening.

Dish Manny? WHAT A JOKE! Hes a great hitter and him and Papi back to back is great, and in my opinion irreplaceable.

OH, BTW...you mentioned Texas with dishing A-rod, Manny's not an ass like A-rod...it seems like A-rod is a team cancer, and from what I see, Manny is not.

I love manny and he just is waking up. I would be very unhappy to see him gotten rid of.

There are plent of other poeple who should be sent packing, and I frankly think he is awesome--and should be our left fielder for the entire term of his contract.

Posted
He is awesome but that contract is hella big. I don't know. It depends I guess. If he starts performing, then that's swell. But I'm sure the Organization would love to be rid of that contract.

We cut salary, but we still had to pay luxury tax and team officials are trying to get away from doing that. Money is OF COURSE an issue, otherwise they wouldn't have tried to trade him to Texas, wouldn't have tried to put him on waivers, etc. Money is an issue with Manny's gigantic contract.

Believe me, I want nothing more than to bash the hell out of the Yankees from now until the day I die. I happen to disagree with you all that Manny Ramirez is irreplacable. Yes, he's a .300, 40 HR, 130 RBI threat every year, but he basically goes against everything the organization stands for (no long term contracts, don't put all your money into one player) and the $20 million could be spent in other ways.

Look at who the Red Sox were able to pay after NOT giving Pedro 15 mil/year: Clement ($8 mil), Miller ($1.5 mil), Wells ($4 mil).

Imagine what they could do with an extra $20. They could get a left fielder who could not only hit the ball, but also play good defense. In addition, they could also improve the bullpen, second base, and the bench while they're at it with the money saved.

Just look at the late 90s Yankees-- not a superstar in the bunch. This team can win without Manny Ramirez.

Posted

They can win without Manny but I would rather see them not do it. Manny may be cost a lot yes but personally I believe his value is close to what we are paying. The man is by far the best right handed HITTER in baseball and is argueably the best all around hitter period he'll go through his slumps like everyone else in the game but he will also go on those tears where he steps up to the plate and you almost EXPECT him to hit a HR. He's a great player makes our offense that much greater he may have his issues in the field and no he's not fast but in the end he gets his numbers to where they should be and it can only help the team.

P.S The Mets are never going to part with David Wright

As I mentioned in the game thread, either Adam Dunn at 1B or Ken Griffey at CF is being showcased tonight if you want to read into things. Hopefully, it's Dunn; I really don't want Griffey's glass bones.

Dunn and Bellhorn in the lineup is like an automatic 6 K's per game. Are we trying to lead the league in K's?

Posted
At least Dunn has extra base power. That man can swing the stick.

You're insane dude - Dunn is going to be making some SERIOUS bank in a little while. Overpriced players aren't solutions, especially when they have huge holes in their game (like incredible K ratio). I don't want him, and I can pretty much guarantee neither does Theo.
