I think what you see is what you get with Wells. He's fully capable (obviously) of shutting out good teams like the Yankees last weekend and St. Louis yesterday, but because he can't overpower people, he's also prone to the bad outing (like against LA) when he isn't locating his pitches.

With Wells it's all about location, which means he's less consistent than someone with dominant stuff who might be able to get away with pitches more often.

I like how Wells doesn't walk a lot of folks, he makes you beat him. I like how he's not intimidated by the big boys (Baltimore, New York, St. Louis, etc), and he should be a valuable pitcher down the road. However, he will still have outings like he did in Toronto or even LA (which wasn't THAT bad) where he misses over the plate and gets hit hard.

he throws a lot of strikes. which they expect, so they tend to swing at it which will sometimes result in a lot of hits if they're a good hitting team unless he throws a wicked good strike, then he's untouchable. he's valuable to this team, I think, and I hope he has more amazing outings like last night. it's a shame he couldn't get a CG in and we had to suffer through possible heart failure when Foulke got up.

What I hope about Wells is that he stays consistent. In his first two starts it was painful to watch. Only going 4.1 IP in New York giving up 10 hits and 4 ER then next start out at Toronto he went 6.1 IP and gave up 9 hits on 6 ER. Then you see him step it up in the next two games giving up no ERs in 15 IP vs. the Devil Rays and in Baltimore. And since then, it's been more inconsistency. Hopefully he'll stay on track... he's proven he still has what it takes.

If there is one think I know about David Wells is that he is a big game pitcher. He has pitched great in games such as:

1998 DS Game 1

1998 ALCS Game 1

1998 ALCS Game 5

2003 DS Game 4

2003 ALCS Game 5

Also in 2003 I remember a game he pitched against the Sox in Sept. when he stopped a big Yankee losing streak.

He really is a very good pitcher and he never beats himself by walking people.
