I don't know if it's still a guarantee that he preforms well. We can just hope that he puts up some good numbers, it's getting boring not being able to type Schil's numbers in my Red Sox Pitching Report. :(

Maybe by the time he returns...our offense will be clicking on all cylinders (well hopefully all cough2Bcough) but at least enough that if he isnt superman like he was last year, we will give him enough run support to pile up victories for the Sox

Looking at Schil's starts you can still see even when he pitches bad when healthy he will be dominant:

                   H/A IP H R ER SO/BB HR BF G/F PC GSc
04/13 C.Schilling.. H 5.2 9 5 5 5/1 2 27 5/7 108 35 L
04/18 C.Schilling.. H 5.0 10 5 3 10/2 0 29 2/3 117 39 W
04/23 C.Schilling.. A 7.0 9 6 6 5/0 1 29 10/6 94 40 L

I mean, he strikes out A LOT more in each start then every other pitcher we throw out there.

getting schilling back in mid season will be fine if we can stay close to the O's, Yanks, whoever. We have a smiliar record to the twins and braves. Two teams that consistently make the playoffs. We took 2/3 from the Angels (leaders in the west) and Yanks (the hated ones). Yeah, we have some games that look bad. The O's just lost 2/3 to the Pirates. So we're getting some favors here.

But if schill comes back healthy then it will be just about the right time for a nice streak of consistent ball. Mix in another starter, reliever 2nd Baseman or 1st baseman in there, and we've got the makings of a great run in the 2nd half. Remember, its staying close that matters most, not winning every game in May.

What Schilling adds is the ability to almost universally win every other series. He pitches every 5th game, which means that we should almost be guarenteed one more victory out of five than we're getting now. Given that I think our rotation currently can win roughly 3/5 games (and not consistently, as we saw tonight, Wells can be great, Wake can be great, Arroyo can be great, Miller/Clement can be great, but none is consistently great). Add Schilling and you're going to win about 4 out of every 6 games, or at least have a great shot (3 of 6 here, 4 of six there).

Also, Curt Schilling is anything but selfish. A few years ago he had the opportunity to pitch over 200-something innings that would have kicked in his bonus. The manager asked him if he would mind not starting that game, and he took it off to save the team a couple hundred thousand dollars when they were well out of the playoff hunt. He also sacrificed the rest of his career for the red sox and if that helps HIM personally (i.e., he'll forever be a hero in Boston/the rest of the country) then so be it. That's one of the benefits of playing baseball: if you win, people like you, you also get paid more and your fans are happier. So it may look selfish, but I wasn't sitting there saying "Curt Schilling won the world series" last october. No, I was saying "the Red Sox won the world series!" or even, "we won the world series". At no point was it all about Schilling and I don't think he wanted it to be all about him.

When he pitched those games this year he rushed himself back which he shouldnt have!. He should have took more time off. Right now our only starter that i think we have to worry about is wake.... He was doing fine then he just like stopped..... He hasnt been doing so good

He also adds confidence, something which this team doesn't seem to have much of right now. Sure we're winning games, and are leaps and bounds better than the yanks, but it doesn't seem like we have the confidence necessary to be division leaders.

It may be a result of last year, but the drive to win seems to be severely reduced, both in the fans and the players. (I find myself forgiving mistakes MUCH more easily than I have in the past). Schilling is a born winner. He's an intense competitor as we've seen with the bloody sock, and he wants to win. With him back in the dugout starting games, it may give the sox the kick they need to run away with this thing.

I can't say I didn't expect that I always told myself if they win one just one they have a free pass for me for the next 5 years I mean we should be more forgiving but I doubt that the players don't want to win as much they seem just as driven as they did last year. I think psychologically it seems like the team is more lose becuase you are more lose with them when in reality they (the team) have been this loose really the entire time. If they were as uptight as the fans there is no way they would have come back from 0-3 last year.

This is only semi-related but anyone know why Schillling ( & his wife) keep going to AZ? He re-habed there & she trained/ran in a marathon there over the off season. He also went out there again. I have heard that that is their off season home but I thought their kids were in school in MA.

He lives out there... that's also where he has trainers and such... if he feels more comfortable there, go for it I say.

Now in regard to the Sox, Schilling and its effect on our record... obviously a healthy Schill is an upgrade to the staff, but I consider the real problem the inconsistant bullpen. I still have faith in Foulke, but Embree I think is going to struggle all year. I think the pen needs to be fixed for us to compete for the division... I think if that happens we could make do even if Schilling doesn't come back at all. I consider our rotation very strong even without him.

You're right. If I had to pick one problem that needs fixing ASAP, it's then pen. Then again, our starting pitching is really working guys like Timlin, Embree, Foulke, ect. to death right now. Once the starting pitching all starts clicking I think the bullpen will too.

I havent really commented on this topic yet because I'm not really sure about it. The few appearances that Curt has had, hes been pretty much terrible, and just didnt look like his self. I dont really want to see that anymore, it really disturbed me. It would be much better for us, and the teams playoff future this season, if Schilling waiting until he was 200% ready to pitch. Our rotation is pefectly fine right now, but theyre just not performing the way they should. I have confidence that they can start pitching much better than they have and this team can go on a roll. But I dont know when, hopefully soon. But, this is always a tough time of the season for the Sox, because we pretty much suck at interleague play, and it doesnt help that we play the divisions two best teams right away.

Obviously if we had Schilling, he would have made a difference, and we would probably have a better record, but I think its better for not only his own future not to further injure himself, but its better for the teams future as well if he can come back and pitch as best as he can. Its a tough situation to deal with, but I think in the end we will be fine.
