With the exception of Curt Schilling, who was injured as you may recall and this is his spring training, our overall starting pitching has been quite awesome. Specifically the ERAs. These numbers don't include last night's start for Clement, who is actually 2-0 with a 2.13 ERA. His K/BB is 23/11. Sorry about that first column of stats.

I wouldnt say "firing on all cylinders". Yeah, we have been winning, but the pitching is not going to stay this great all season long, and people like Manny, Ortiz, Millar, Varitek, Renteria all need to step up and start hitting the ball like they are capable of doing if this team is going to make any noise in the playoffs.

tek has 3 Hr's allready.. i think he's actually hitting a bit better than he normally should. he'll slump sooner or later.

Despite last night I think its safe to say Manny is already firing on all cylinders. He's been hitting absolute bombs the past few games and dont forget the 2 multi HR games in the past week.

The thing is that even if we aren't "firing" on all cylinders that either our pitching picks the hitting up (like last night) or the hitting picks up the pitching, but mostly its been the pitching that does the dirtywork. Hopefully ERent gets out of his slump.

A 1.17 ERA in the past 7 starts is fantastic...why were we written off again before the season when talking about who the greatest pitching staff would be?

BTW, I keep up with all the Boston pitching staff stats...the link is in my sig.

If Schilling does well tonight, even though it's against the D-Rays, everything has finally fallen into place. The pitching was a big question mark for this team, especially going into the beginning of the season, but I think they've proven themselves (even though we've only played 20 or so games). When Miller gets back, watch out MLB.

Another rough outing for Schilling tonight. He's obviously still in rehab mode but I remain confident that he will come around. Miller was scheduled to pitch for Portland today but it was rained out. He'll go tomorrow. I am impressed with Wells last two starts and Clement was outstanding in his last start at Baltimore.

I am officially jumping on the clement bandwagon now......lol

love his gottee too!

I guess this is what it sounded like in LA when Gange was pitching well.

I just realized that you're out west, so while we're all over here in Boston sleeping like babies you're thinking "where the hell is everyone?".

I was actually referring to the goatee comment...

ya anybody who says manny isnt firing on all cylinders is wrong... just look at how hes hitting the ball... he is the most consistent player in baeball .320 BA, 40 HR, 120 RBI, unless theres an injury those number are pretty muc h gaurenteed

Earlier this week he was on fire, but then he regressed a little. This has nothing to do with our starting pitching, but look at his numbers for the past 3 games (2 of them losses):

Boston AB R H RBI BB SO LOB AVG
Ramirez, M, LF 5 0 1 1 0 2 3 .274
Ramirez, M, LF 3 1 1 0 0 1 0 .281
Ramirez, M, LF 3 0 0 0 1 2 1 .278
[/Code]

1/11 is not "firing on all cylinders". Especially not when he strikes out 5 times.

So, even with this past series with the D-Rays and Orioles, you're telling me that Manny is firing on all cylinders right now?

Ok, since the s***'s really hit the fan now...we can all bitch in here. I don't like the looks of things, especially since Miller probably won't be ready for a while.

I'm not too worried.

We play the Yankees May 27-29 (and Baltimore right after), so lets work our way backward from there. Between now and then we play Texas 3 games, Detroit 4 games, Seattle 6 games, Oakland 6 games, Atlanta 3 games and Toronto 3 games. It's 25 games until the Yankee series.

The offenses of Texas and Detroit worry me some, but the other 18 games are against poorer offensive teams.

If Wells is out for 4-6 weeks then Miller will be back well before him. Pencil him in to start, say, May 15. So he'll be around for the Oakland, Atlanta and Toronto series just before NY and Baltimore.

Schilling should be back before the NY series regardless, be it a day or a week. If it's a day before, then he'll have had a whole month to recover. If it's a week before (3 weeks recovery) then he'll be back right after Miller comes back - somewhere around the Atlanta series.

The rest of the starters are reasonably stable. Gonzales has a history of injury but Halama, Arroyo, Wakefield and Clement do not. I think Gonzales and Halama can each make 4-5 starts without it killing the Red Sox. Anything over .500 from that combination is a bonus for me. May I also add that Clement, Arroyo and Wake have been the best pitchers on the staff so far this year... so it's not like we just lost two of our most productive pitchers.

Also, the Sox are not the only team with pitching problems. Every team in the AL East has pitching problems of some sort, so don't expect one team to run away with the division too soon.

Probably the biggest problem with the whole schedule this coming month is that the Sox only play 9 of those 25 games at home (9 out of 28 if you count the trip to NY).

On the brighter side, if Foulke needs more work to get in a groove, he'll surely get plenty. Also, this can only help Wells and Schill come playoff time. They should be a little better rested than the other guys.

Stay positive. We have the depth to get through this. We are not the World Champions for nothing!

We're pretty much gonna have to piece it together from here untill at least one of our two broken wheels can come back I don't like the looks of hte next month or two.

I thought I would update this, as things are pretty different than when we started this thread.

Has the starting pitching been excellent? No. But it has been effective, especially as of late.

Red Sox Pitching coach Dave Wallace has not ruled out a six-man starting rotation, either. Wallace said last night he has used it in both New York and Los Angeles for ''one or two times around the rotation." When you're considering such a move, that means you're deep, and perhaps it also means the Sox will call off the scouts who are watching Jason Schmidt, Barry Zito, and Ted Lilly, and concentrate on revamping the bullpen.

Heh - better idea than the 4 man rotation the Rockies put together last year.

"Schilling will make rehab start Wednesday

By Boston.com Staff | June 24, 2005

PHILADELPHIA -- Red Sox ace Curt Schilling threw five innings of a simulated game (84 pitches) today, and is scheduled to make his first rehab start Wednesday for Triple-A Pawtucket in Charlotte, the Globe’s Gordon Edes reported.

He will be held to between 75-80 pitches on Wednesday against the Knights, a White Sox affiliate.

Schilling has been on the disabled list for most of the season with an ankle injury, and will probably make two rehab starts before returning to the Sox. That timetable would make it possible for him to return July 8 or 9 at Camden Yards. The team's last game before the All-Star break is July 10.

Schilling also threw a simulated game on Monday, tossing about 60 pitches.http://cache.boston.com/bonzai-fba/File-Based_Image_Resource/dingbat_story_end_icon.gif"

.... It's all starting to come around! :D
