ESPN’s Peter Gammons said on Boston sports radio station WEEI 850 AM on Sunday that Burnett would prefer to be dealt to Boston than anywhere else.

However, it appears the White Sox are getting serious about the pursuit of Burnett. According to several published reports Sunday, Chicago has packaged top prospect Brendan McCarthy along with reliever Damaso Marte in attempt to pry the righthander from the Marlins. One potential snag, according to the Boston Globe, is that the White Sox reportedly will not go through with that deal without signing Burnett to an extension.

Burnett on possibly being traded-

"I'm kind of both ways with it," Burnett said Sunday about signing an extension before the winter. "If it's the right team and the right place, then why not? But I'm still pretty keen on seeing what's going on in the off-season. But, like I said, if it's the right place and the right team, absolutely."

I think that if Burnett came to Boston he would sign. He will like it here. Plus not only will he love working with Varitek, but that will also make him a better pitcher most likely. Look at Matt Clement. With Boston Burnett will want to sign and he will get better.

Yeah plus Florida seldom rarely gives him run support AJ needs, his 3.38 ERA should show better than 7-6 record he has this season. Bronson does more good on the roda most of time more than home with Fenway's dimensions, having Florida Marlins' "pitchers" ballpark could help him

mcarthy is 22 years old. is 3-7 with an ERA of 5.20 on their AAA team

anibal is 20 years old .is 1-1 with an era of 1.23 on AA and was 6-1 with an era of 2.42 in A

i also think arroyo would be more important to the Marlins than damaso marte or jose contreras

They might throw in Brian Anderson, which would put them ahead.

im just tryin to think like aj burnett who did indicate he as bigpapip had said, he wants to stay on the East Coast considering his wife and family live in Maryland, which now Baltimore is out of it--of anything it will be announced during game 3 against the twins at fenway on May 31, day game that I got tix for, ill be checkin my cell nonstop for news updates, haha

Lets play Florida GM:

Who would you rather have???

McCarthy and Marte OR Arroyo and Sanchez???

Probably the first one, because I can prod the White Sox into taking Lowell. If I can get Anderson from the White Sox without giving up Lowell, then I take that deal.

If the White Sox deal falls through, I tell the media, the Red Sox don't want to repeat, because of some Latin AA prospect. That should get fans like the immortal yankeehater (like most Red Sox fans are like, not THAT gay, but ignorant about potential) up in a tizzy to demand a trade for Burnett.

All I can say is thank god for Theo, who will make the right move.

The Marlins have apparently narrowed their focus to the Chicago White Sox in discussions for A.J. Burnett, but there remains a chance the pitcher won't be dealt before Sunday's trade deadline.

That's because the White Sox aren't sure they can sign Burnett, a free agent after the season, to an extension that would keep him in Chicago beyond this year.

Burnett said he's content to remain with the Marlins through this season but would rather test the free agent market to gauge his value than agree to an extension with a new team if the Marlins are able to work out a trade.

''If it's the right team and the right place, why not?'' Burnett said of signing an extension if traded. ``But I'm still pretty key on seeing what's going on in the off-season.''

The White Sox could likely give up minor-league starter Brandon McCarthy and left-handed reliever Damaso Marte to get Burnett.

If they trade Burnett, the Marlins might also look to acquire a starting pitcher from some other team.

if they are looking for a starting pitcher, a pitching prospect and a lefty reliever, why not arroyo, sanchez and embree????

i think the marlins still havnt gotten over the kevin millar thing

Buster Olney on Anibal Sanchez

Take a wild guess on who Adam is.

Adam (Nashua): You mentioned Anibal Sanchez as a possible trading chip for the Red Sox. What's the skinny on him, and who would you compare him to?

Buster Olney: (11:05 AM ET ) Adam: I haven't seen him, but I've talked to scouts with other two other teams the last couple of days and they say that he's the real deal -- that if Florida wants to build a deal around a young pitcher, he would be well worth it (along with Arroyo, who would go right into the Florida rotation). Looks like it's White Sox vs. Red Sox for Burnett...

From an ESPN chat-

Matt (Boston,MA): Where will A.J Burnett be pitching next week?

Buster Olney: (11:22 AM ET ) Matt: If I had to guess, I would say the Red Sox; I think that's where Burnett wants to go, from what I hear, and he's got some power to steer this thing because he's a free agent at the end of the year. But if Kenny Williams absolutely decides to go for it, even overpaying, that's how he'll wind up in Chicago. But again, this is such a fluid situation, I wouldn't bet my house on any particular team; Boston is the educated guess, today.

Posted

John(Minneapolis): Do you see the twins making a move for some offensive help? and if so would they be willing to part with their top prospects or deal SP's like mays and Lohse

Buster Olney: I think they're going to do something. Boone has not given them the burst they needed, Morneau has struggled so badly that they moved him deep in the lineup (although he had a nice day Saturday), and when they asked for minor league help this weekend, the first question was: Who is the hottest hitter? There does seem to be some momentum, from what I understand, on this J.C. Romero/Bill Mueller thing. But I'm convinced they'll get somebody, because they've got to be absolutely scared to death by the run Oakland is making right now.

I'm luke-warm on any deal including Sanchez AND Bronson Arroyo for Burnett. I hate to give up both a decent starter AND a top-notch prospect for a rental player (and unless AJ resigns, that's all he is).....
Posted
if we do end up getting burnett, id like to see lowell here to especially if millars still on the team because they are very good friends. hes also been doing very good since the allstar game
Posted
millar is also good frieds with AJ since all three of them played for Marlins at the same time. I think its possible to see Ortiz again today at first base with Doug Mirabelli as DH. Its what they had done last time Red Sox faced off Tampa's pitcher Hendrickson, since Mirabelli is 7 for 13, while varitek is like 3 for 17

I hate to break it to you guys but it doesn't look like were getting AJ. Actually according to Peter Gammons it appears AJ is going nowhere. The marlins are just going to hold on to him since they are only 4 1/2 games out.

ahhchon: clement would get destroyed, i'de take bronson over him anyday. we know what clements limit is, we have a good idea of bronsons and it's in the 3.5-4 era. keep bronson and find other stuff to trade for burnett.

any offer losing bronson is not a good idea imo. he's a good starter, that's why people want him. AND CHEAP. 300k this year.

john

this was a funny post to see

I was looking at the first 2 posts of this thread, Here's what they said:

moving Arroyo would leave us with only 4 starters. That could mean looking into Matt Clement, but am I the only one who thinks he would get killed in Fenway?

hmmmmm, guess he was wrong

and so was he....and boy was ahhchon totally off or what

EDIT: see riverside already posted this, so I posted it twice because it was sooooo funny!

Was I wrong??

Matt Clement at Fenway Park = 4.36 ERA....not that amazing

Overall ERA = 4.30 ERA....the ace of the Red Sox rotation?

10-3 record...thank god he has the Red Sox offense

There is no love lost between the Florida and Boston ownerships, and now that St. John's reliever Craig Hansen has signed with the Red Sox -- after turning down a $2.6 million offer from the Marlins on draft day that would have allowed Hansen to go straight to the big leagues, prompting the Marlins to ask Bud Selig to investigate -- those feelings might be heightened

so do they want hansen too?? lol...yeah right

Do the Marlins believe the Red Sox had some influence on Hansen/Boras rejecting their offer? If not, I can't see how the Red Sox are to blame at all, regardless of whether their supposed offer (which they're not supposed to have been able to make) was.

Gammons also alluded again to the belief that the White Sox can't sign Burnett, but the Red Sox may be able to. Also, says the issue with the Sox offer is that they don't supply a reliever for the Marlins....whereas the White Sox deal does....what about embree? how many days left do we have to trade embree?

Posted
embree was designated on july 19, so 3 days left, just so happens to be wknd of trade deadline, maybe theo could package him in a deal, if 10 days go by and sox do nothing tehy need to give embree a check for $1 million. Its funny about Marlins trying to offer Hyde Park native Hansen a nice big fat check, Hansen said Sox inticed him more with contract of $4 million for 4 years as well as getting to play for his favorite team since he can remember. Hey if they want Bronson so bad, grin and bare it

all along people have spoken too highly of Matt Clement. I had a post in the regular forum at the end of June...I predicted Clement would go 8-4 in the second half....everyone told me i was an idiot because at that point he was 9-1. Since then he is 1-2.....I'm not even sure he can make my prediction now...I'm such an idiot.

The beginning of this post was discussions about AJ Burnett who would be a good replacement ace for when we lost Pedro. You still think Clement is an ace like so many others thought?? Maybe he is not getting "killed" depending on your deffinition.....but his ERA is going up quickly in the 2nd half just like it did last year.

As for ahhchon.....he was right as well.....Bronson Arroyo has a lower ERA (4.26), costs less money, more versatile being in the bullpen or starter, and is younger than Matt Clement....I would take Bronson Arroyo over Matt Clement

Posted
ok dude i wasnt saying clement is the infinitive ace of 2005, the first half he was the ace during that span but has dropped some but since then wells is now becoming more of the most consistent starter. if bronson keeps using that breaking ball in abundance and hanging it up there his ERA wont be the lowest

OK, who cares anymore? Clement is on our team for 3 more years, whether you like it or not. This thread is about us potentially getting AJ Burnett, its not about who is better- bronson or clement?

and I would take clement, you can't deny the fact that Varitek has helped Matt greatly, and I agree his is not the ace, but he is the best we have to this point

If we wanted to rank our pitchers by potential and who will be the best I would actually need to mention Wade Miller who has the best upside....Jason Varitek would agree with me on that and I've been saying it all along.....but you are right back to the real deal which is AJ Burnett

Actually nothing new to report really just the waiting game....riverside you did mention Santana in a different post and I brought his name up too. You didn't happen to read about that somewhere did you?? The Sox did mention they were talking about another starting pitcher with Minnesota

I agree! Can we stop talking about bronson vs. clement and start discussing what this post is really about...AJ Burnett.
