I know it sounds like hearsay, but should we trade him? We got two caple outfielders in Roberts, and Kapler. I think that trading him for a good pitcher in the offseason might help us out. But then again Nixon is a great offensive player.

I've never liked Nixon, trade away. Theo traded Nomar, showing that he wasnt afraid to deal fan favorites and mainstays of the team.

No F*ing way the guy is a true definition of a dirtdog the guy is jsut a true Red Sox player through and through he's a great player and as Empire said a Yankee killer no way.

Wow. One of the 10 best hitters in MLB last season and everyone is willing to trade him? A guy making less than $7 million dollars a season? A guy that has been in the organization for 11 years now? A guy who made sure he signed a contract before becoming eligible for free agency to stay in the place he loved? A guy who didn't make rediculous contractual demands because he was made at the rookie contract he signed? A guy who is worth more than he's getting? The only remaining product of the system in the everyday lineup? Sure, Kapler and Roberts are capable, but Trot put up a .975 OPS last season! To think either of that could come within 300 points over that over the course of a year is crazy.

You guys are worried about getting pitching!?! Think about all the money coming off the books and the caliber of pitchers that will be available on the market? Why should we trade the last piece of the mid-'90's farm system for a middle rotation starter when we have a guy capable of a 1.000 OPS and 30 homers?

This is just rediculous. He is going to quickly remind everyone this season and in the playoffs how fantastic a player he really is. I'm disappointed in you guys. He was our best hitter today!

Hell no. Nixon is the heart and soul of the team. I've never seen any player wear the Red and White and give more effort than Nixon. I like the players we have right now. Keep Kapler and Nixon, and sure Roberts. Use Kapler against lefties and maybe sometimes in other games, like say to give Manny a rest so we don't need to use Millar. Then use Nixon against righties. Why not have them both? If you want to get rid of an outfielder, drop Damon (I hate to say it). I would rather not trade Damon, but Kapler has speed and a much stronger arm, and could handle being a leadoff hitter.

I'd like to keep the outfield as is, but DON"T TRADE NIXON!!!

what? Top 20 maybe.

Click the link I provided. He was one of the top 10 hitters in baseball last season. OPS does not lie.

Zenny, I'll admit, I have an illegitimate hatred for Nixon. I just don't like him, sorry. And you can put your avatar back you know, that zenny1 guy hasnt showed his face around here for a while.

Hey, it's cool, I have an irrational one for Jason Varitek for some reason. I think it stemmed from reading about his draft situations in Baseball America way back in '93 and '94 (I also still hate J.D. Drew for the stuff he did to Philly, John Elway for the Colts thing and Eli Manning for the Chargers thing; but I digress). I don't feel like the avatar thing either. I may put one, but it looks cool without one for now. Thanks for getting rid of that guy, too.

Nixon is signed through 2006 at 6.5 mill a year. It's possible Theo may look to unload some salary, but with his health this season, I doubt the Sox would get good value in a trade.

No no no no no.

Please don't trade Nixon.

Nixon is the kind of guy you should be KEEPING. Doesn't cause trouble, plays hard every day, is a team player... all you have to do to realize what he means to this team is look at his comments this season. He's willing to sit because he KNOWS that's what's best for the TEAM.

Nixon destroys righthanded pitchers. He struggles a bit vs lefties, so maybe Kapler could platoon with him.

Nixon is a clutch, hard-nosed baseball player. At $6.5 mil / year, he's a bargain.

I really appreciate what Kapler and Roberts have done this season, and they are invaluable to this team....but don't trade Nixon.

I'm still here guys. I just haven't posted in a while. I agree with Zenny. It would be very stupid to trade more offense away. We have already traded away one of our better hitters in Nomar so why risk trading more?

there is no question we have to sign Varitek and Lowe.

I love Nixon, and would be really pissed if they traded him.

I hope that the idea of trading him is just blog speak. And by no means a fact.

The myriad of subs who played right fieldhave done well. But trot should be the every day guy.

No question.

Resign Tek? Yes. Shoppach isn't quite ready and Tek is still a leader and a productive bat.

Resign Lowe? No. He'll command too much money for a streaky #3 starter. Arroyo and Wake can move up in the rotation, and the Sox could try to get a bargain starter for # 5 (Jaret Wright perhaps?)

If they want to pony up the dough to get a good SP, let's look at who is available after 04 (according to an article by Peter Gammons)

Right-hand starting pitchers: Pedro Martinez, Carl Pavano, Kevin Millwood, Jaret Wright, Russ Ortiz, Derek Lowe, Esteban Loaiza, Aaron Sele, Brad Radke, Matt Morris, Paul Wilson, Roger Clemens, Hideo Nomo, Matt Clement, Kris Benson, Jon Lieber (option).

Left-hand starting pitchers: Eric Milton, David Wells, Odalis Perez, Al Leiter (club option), Shawn Estes.

Boston needs to get Pedro Martinez signed, then look at what else is available on the market. Ortiz, Radke, Clement, Pavano are all BETTER than Lowe, and if someone could get Millwood back to his dominance he showed in Atlanta, he'd be an awesome #3.

My point is... There will be better options than Lowe on the market...and since his agent is Scott Boras... He'll be asking for more than he's worth.

I dont just re sign Tek on the sole fact that Shoppach isn't ready there is so much Tek dose that you can't see on a start sheet he's a warrior and he's a tough guy he's the real soul of the team and manages the pitching stff like no noe else can I say we wait untill Tek is ready to stop instead of Shoppach ready to start.

i think signing varitek is no brainer. He adds so much both in the clubhouse and on the field.

shoppy might be good, but varitek is great.

Lowe might take some coin but I think they should try, anyway. I gather a lot of players like him, and he fits into the chemistry oif the team. I dont see wake hanging on any longer as the 5th starter and I think the jury is out on bronson.

I f they need the lowe money to sign varite and add to pedro's wallet I say cut derek loose, but if they can keep them they should.

I think we need another quality starter because wake wont cut it.

But for now I love the rotation and the bullpen.

Boy, watching the yankmees middle relief corp get bombed last night was a beautiful thing.

there are sooo many good pitchers in free agency lowe would be very easily replaced with a pitcher that is more bang for the buck. Maybe Matt Morris, although he may be expensive and not fit in our rotation, but the best out of those free agent pitchers besides pedro is Carl Pavano
Posted

Matt Morris is going to pitch in New York next year, either in Flushing Queens or the Bronx. Besides the point, he's retardedly overrated. He's given up more homeruns than he has starts this season. That's disaster in Fenway. His control has also been suspect and he's going to command top dollar. No thanks.

If the Sox want Odalis Perez, he's a lock to be in a Sox uniform next season. He loves Boston, the players and the organization. He worked with Dave Wallace in LA and he's friends with our Dominican All-Stars. That, of course, hinges on whether or not Sox brass wants him. He would be a nice lefty to break things up.

I like Matt Clement. His K rates are a good indicator of how well he'd do in Fenway. Pavano scares me a little more. His K/9 is barely over 5. For a right-hander, that's not very good.

Jaret Wright is another intriguing name, but how cheap will he be (he'd get the "wow" money) and will John Schuerholz let him go? I'm really not willing to take a chance on this guy unless we hire Leo Mazzone in some capacity.

Personally, I would re-sign Pedro and bring in Clement. We don't need the lefty that badly and they will demand similar contracts. Keeping Clement out of the Bronx is pivotal. That would give us a Pedro-Schill-Clement-Arroyo-Wake rotation next season.

Actually, upon further review, I'd more Wakefield to the bullpen and bring in Perez as well.

 Back to Nixon: It's very key to see Nixon in top form these last few nights, just in time for NY series (if not rained out); Nixon may be our top clutch hitter in big games, esp. vs. Yankmees.
