Sox look to bounce back

06/24/2004 12:54 AM ET

By Alan Ginsberg / MLB.com

The Red Sox host Minnesota in the rubber game of a three-game set on Thursday afternoon hoping to bring them back to .500 in June. After losing, 4-2, on Wednesday night, they are 9-10 on the month after going 16-14 in May.

If nothing else, Twins pitchers can expect to have to work. Entering play on Wednesday, Boston hitters had seen more pitches than any other team in baseball and led the Majors with an average of 4.02 pitches seen per plate appearance. The Red Sox also had a best-in-baseball 256 extra-base hits. With two doubles on Wednesday night, they now have 162 for the season, putting them on pace for 375, which would break the record of 373 shared by the 1997 Red Sox and the 1930 Cardinals.

Boston's starter, Tim Wakefield, has been shelled in each of his last four starts, giving up 25 runs -- 23 of them earned -- in 21 2/3 total innings.

The Twins counter with Brad Radke, who hasn't won since May 22 and is just 1-1 in his last six starts, but has a 1.94 ERA in those games.

Pitching matchup

BOS: RHP Tim Wakefield

4-5, 4.81 ERA in 2004

1-0, 5.68 vs. MIN in 2003

10-2, 4.21 lifetime vs. MIN

MIN: RHP Brad Radke

4-3, 3.17 ERA in 2004

1-0, 7.11 vs. BOS in 2003

8-6, 5.20 lifetime vs. BOS

Players to watch

Mark Bellhorn, who recorded his 300th career hit when he homered to lead off the sixth inning Wednesday night, is hitting .316 with 18 RBIs and 25 runs over his last 27 games. ... Doug Mirabelli has reached base safely in seven consecutive games, homering twice, doubling, scoring four times and driving in four runs over that stretch. ... Twins closer Joe Nathan is 1-0 with a 0.60 ERA and 20 saves in 21 opportunities over his last 27 appearances.

Quotable

"I do think that his numbers, of all people, are a little bit skewed. He's the one guy we haven't made a play for. We've been there. We haven't made a play and then there's been a big hit. It's happened a lot and that's the formula for getting beat around." -- Terry Francona on Wakefield

Games to Monitor:

  • New York (44-25) at Baltimore (29-38), 7:05 p.m. ET
Let's watch to see if Baltimore can win the rubber game of that series. A Yankee loss and a Red Sox win would but the Sox 3 1/2 games out of first place.

I wasn't aware the game had started until I flipped the channel and it was the 3rd inning. Apparently we can only score on solo homers ...

I know, isnt it amazing? David Ortiz only has one home run with men on base, the rest are solo shots. It's pathetic if you think about it, if we could just get the longball with men on we'd be so much better off.

It's a funny game sometimes. I have NO COMPLAINTS about David Ortiz though....he's leading the AL in RBI!!! He's getting the job done even though he doesn't hit the 3-run HR

this team is horrible! how can you not get a hit with ortiz/manny/nomar up??? pathetic...that is what describes this team now...pathetic!

They're certainly playing that way. You can't win division titles or even wild cards losing 2 out of 3 from the effing TWINS.....at HOME!!

Pitching gets it done today, come back from a deficit, only to lose it on an error!

That, Tek04, is VERY pathetic.

Needless to say, I'm deeply dissapointed in the team so far. There's no way the Yankees lose 2 of 3 from Baltimore! We're in trouble right now.

Pokey would have not thrown that ball away.

Pokey also would not have gone 2-4....

Manny looked downright horrible there, I pin the inability to score on him. Also, how come to Twins can make a catch in the stands with both of their players colliding? Had that been the sox, both players surely would have gone on the DL, the ball would have been dropped, and the next player would surely have hit a homerun.

I certainly don't blame Nomar.....people make mistakes...they just happen to wear Red Sox uniforms when they do so....

Next year Nomar will probably win an MVP playing second for the Yankees....

Funny how this idea doesn't occur to you when other players *cough* do the same thing.

Williamson should've stayed in for the ninth. He has been filthy this season and only threw 4 pitches against Hunter. Stupid call by Tito, in my opinion.
