Nomar Garciaparra's agent thinks the star shortstop will stay with the Boston Red Sox after this season.

Arn Tellem spoke Monday night moments after chatting with Red Sox owner John Henry at Garciaparra's annual bowling fund-raiser.

Garciaparra can become a free agent after the season.

"He wants to stay here and I personally would like to see him stay here," Tellem said. "You can see the outpouring here. Everyone wants him to stay here and I know both sides would like him to stay and I believe in the end that's what will happen."

Garciaparra is making $11.5 million in the final year of his contract. Last offseason, the Red Sox tried to obtain shortstop Alex Rodriguez from Texas for Manny Ramirez. The Red Sox then were expected to trade Garciaparra to open a spot for Rodriguez.

Garciaparra said he was hurt that he learned about that on television. It damaged relations between the team and Tellem.

"We apologized to each other several months ago for getting upset," Henry said. "You're going to get upset once in a while, but no one should get upset in public with each other, so we've been very friendly since we met for the first time in spring training."

Tellem said: "I echo his comments. It's all behind us."

Henry said Garciaparra's popularity with fans is a factor in the team's desire to keep him. Hundreds of fans cheered Garciaparra as he was introduced at the fund-raiser at a bowling alley north of Boston.

"When he steps to the plate you know there's no one who has more of the heart of New England than Nomar Garciaparra," Henry said. "You just hear it in the ballpark every game, every at-bat."

Garciaparra has spent his ninth season with Boston on the disabled list because of tendinitis in his right Achilles but has been working out regularly and hopes to return once he can run at top speed.

The two-time AL batting champion has said he wants to finish his career in Boston.

Henry said he didn't know of any progress toward a new deal. Tellem said there's no rush to reach an agreement.

"There's still plenty of time," he said. "The focus right now is getting Nomar back to playing and finishing up the season well, and there's plenty of time to get a deal done. It's not what matters in May. It's what happens in September, October, November."

I dunno man. It really depends how he does this season. If he really wants to stay with Boston, he won't go asking for ridiculous amounts of money.

I seriously doubt that the rift from this past offseason can ever be repaired without overpaying horrendously for Nomar. He's gone, IMO.

Well, to tell you the truth, the more he stays on the DL the lower his price gets, the less a third team will want him. I'm guessing thats why he wants to stay with Boston now.

A third team isn't likely to ignore Nomar because of a freak injury any more than we avoided Schilling because of his odd DL stints last season. Also, we have no real reason to think that he wants to stay with Boston now, since there is absolutely no reason to confuse agent-speak with fact.

What else is his agent going to say......it's a contract year and Nomar is bowling in Malden for $11-1/2 milion dollars.

eventhough he is being a pussy and works out so hard he like kills himself, we gotta keep him. If we lose him, the best SS in the league will play for another team, who would be his replacement.....Pokey.......hes great at defense but nomars offense blows his away, we need nomes

Hoping he stays (which I do as well) is different than him actually staying. I think we need to see how he plays when he finally comes back to make a final judgement, but I say its 60/40 in favor of him staying.

I heard this morning on Sports Desk that Nomar's leading the All-Star votes. That's brutal. I've had just as many MLB at-bats as he's had this season, but guys like Tejada are being left out. Not to mention Poppy.

The bad news - Nomar's 1st in the voting at SS

The worse news - Jeter's 2nd, while Michael Young rots in 4th.

Also, Kevin Millar is 2nd in votes for 1B. That makes me feel ill.

Nooo!!! Write in Ortiz!!

It's just cause all the sox fans voted for Millar..probably without realizing that Ortiz could be written in.

Also, Isn't there like an All-Star that isn't from the ballots?

Yes, but the fans voting for Millar are still pretty stupid. You have to be quite the homer to consider Kevin Millar to be an All-Star. I guess I'm one of those odd people who believes that you should vote for who deserves to go, and use favoritism towards the home team only as in cases that can objectively be considered to be close (Delgado vs. Ortiz as an example).

Hey, i just joined the site. Nice site though. Personally, i went to the redsox game 10 ballots and wrote in ortiz in all of them. I would really love to see him make a trip to the allstar game, and i agree with you guys. Although Millar is a part of the redsox team, hes doing horrible, and he really does not deserve to be 2nd or 3rd in the voting.

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Nomar Garciaparra's rehab from an injured Achilles tendon continues to go smoothly, the Boston shortstop said Thursday.

Before taking the field for Triple-A Pawtucket for a game against Toledo, Garciaparra met with doctors, trainers and physical therapists for the first time since his last game with the PawSox at Louisville on Monday. The plan is for him to continue play for the PawSox on Friday and Saturday, then return to Boston to meet again with the Red Sox's medical staff Monday before any more plans are made.

Garciaparra went hitless in three at-bats against Toledo starter Shane Loux on Thursday. Garciaparra grounded out in the first, struck out in the third and lined out to center in the fifth. He faced reliever Chris Mears in the seventh and took a called third strike with two on and none out.

In the field, Garciaparra made a fine play on a grounder by Eric Owens in the second, ranging deep into the hole to grab the grounder and throwing sidearm to just nip the speedy Owens at first. He tried to make a similar play against Rich Gomez in the sixth, but was unable to hang onto the grounder, which was ruled a single.

After the game, Garciaparra said the play he made against Owens was especially important in assessing his physical ability.

"That was a pretty big [play] -- I was glad I was able to do that," he said. "That's the kind of play I want to make instinctively. I made it and I didn't think about the injury, and that's a good thing."

After leaving the game in the bottom of the eighth, Garciaparra said he was pleased with the way the Achilles' felt.

"I felt good, and I was glad I could go seven [innings]," he said. "I thought I could go more if I needed to. We'll see how I feel [Friday] and go from there."

Despite the good signs from Thursday, Garciaparra said nothing has been decided as to when he might return to the Boston lineup.

"I would like to [be back by Tuesday], but I've never put a definite time or made a definite goal because if I don't reach it, or if I'm not there, I don't want it to be disappointed," he said. "I'll just take it day-by-day and let it tell me when it's ready."

Even though Garciaparra was in a minor league ballpark and had a less-than-stellar day against Toledo, he said he enjoyed playing against the Mud Hens.

"I've been anxious all year long -- I've been wanting to get out there and I've been doing everything I can to get back out there," Garciaparra said. "I miss playing out there. I'm excited to be able to play in these games. This is great to be back out on the baseball field, doing it and doing things instinctively. To be able to move and not worry about my Achilles -- that's what I was really aiming for, and I'm really excited to be able to do it."

Garciaparra said the wrist injury that sidelined him for much of the 2001 season taught him lessons he is using in this rehab situation.

"It drives me crazy to not be able to go out there and just play," Garciaparra said. "It's what I want to do, and it's what I love to do. But at the same time, I've learned a little bit from the wrist surgery -- it's something that happened, there's nothing you can do about it, just go forward and don't dwell on it. Do whatever you can do to get back. And that's the attitude I've taken."

So, he'll be back next week. Awesome!

It really depends on how well he does this year. It is still up in the air whether I want him here or not. My friend said that they should trade him now so that they can get some value for him, but they won't do that if they are in a race for a playoff spot

Is anyone else nervous that Nomar's return might be bad for the team? Nomar's guaranteed to displace at least one of: Youkilis (17 runs in 18 games, sick), Bellhorn (2nd in AL in BB), or Reese (sorry, but he's better defensively than any of the above, including Nomar).

I'm glad that Nomar's taking it slow, being his typical self and stringing us along for his return. Now they're talking about "one more" game in Pawtucket. I'm not so sure he's going to tear it up when he gets back. Francona seems to be aware of this assuring everyone that Bellhorn and Youkilis will get ample playing time after Nomar comes back.

I anticipate Mueller's return to be similar, but that's probably a little way off since he just had surgery.

I am as well. Also, regaring Mueller, he was struggling a bit before he got injured, so if he struggles when he returns, it'll be par for the season so far.
