  1. Is that still true? I'd have thought 401k's would've caught up to house net equity by now
  2. Another reference point in 2004: RS $127M NYY $184M LAD $93M NYM $97M TOR $50M PHI $93M SDP $55M It felt like every FA was going to the NYY. And if the NYY passed, he was ours. There was seldom a 3rd team to bid against.
  3. More money is always better. But getting 100% return on $280M will beat the heck out of a team with an 85% return on $300M. There is no easy or straightforward answer.
  4. Just imho, the best financial aspect of owning a house is that it forces you to pay attention to your spending habits. Nothing focuses the mind more than being able to reconcile your checking account in your head.
  5. 15 years ago was when people were zagging. Warren Buffet said it best (he borrowed it from someone else) when he said 'be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when other people are fearful'. After the mortgage debacle, I'd see comments all day long in Bloomberg people saying they would never buy a house, or that buying a house was stupid. That's usually when to make a move. That said, if you took your house mortgage money and invested in the S&P, you're still doing pretty well.
  6. It's a huge uptick. We were a bad team from 2022-2024, with little help from cheap prospects. If you don't have that, no amount of spending will make up for it. Now we have plenty on controlled, high-quality players.
  7. He's also not here because his value as a DH is less than it would be as even a weak-fielding 3B. If I have a 110-112 OPS+ guy that I am already paying for, I'd prefer to use Devers $30M+ elsewhere.
  8. I don't think anyone thinks that. As far as I am concerned, this is our window, and should both add another IF AND trade for a #2. But one counter-point to windows, I think some fans have unrealistic expectations and think every year could be our year, if only we spent more. We were a bad team from 2020-2024, despite getting a little lucky in 2021. Adding big FAs to weak teams with no pitching never works. Past that, while I would still decline on contracts like Alonso, we should certainly be spending.
  9. How many posters do we have in here? I mentioned this about twenty years ago and got surprisingly little feed back. Anyone want to create a standard 8-team Yahoo league? We could make it for free. Or, if we have enough bold fans, we could create a small $$$ league, with the winner giving the money to their favorite charity. LMK if anyone is interested.
  10. This is a pet peeve for me, as well as a corporate philosophy. Getting off the RS for a moment, I think some teams should tank occasionally, cut the payroll in half, but then cut the ticket prices and concession prices at the same time. I think you could engage a fair amount of fans of a rebuild, if they thought the team was making a sacrifice as well. Unfortunately, teams apparently aren't allowed to say that, and then they spiral down until they have 60 wins and the rebuild is blindingly obvious.
  11. I don't think you're getting it. Most of the accountants want smart spending, not spending just for the sake of spending. My favorite example is in 2011. Everyone was happy when we signed Gonzo and CC, as was I. But I also knew it made no sense, and that Headley (if possible) and Willingham were the best targets. Did money have anything to do with it? Yes and no. I thought Headley and Willingham were better fits, but the idea that we'd have a gazillion $$$ to spend elsewhere was a consideration. It has to be. I couldn't care less how rich or how poor JH gets. My only concern is WAR/$$$.
  12. I agree with that. R&D is the cornerstone for every business. But it feels like we've been doing a pretty good job of that recently.
  13. I feel like Eddie Murphy in Trading Places. I have you down for one signature bet and you are taking the under at 89.5.
  14. Part of the bet, and part of the fun is that you are betting on what you think the RS will do. The folks that think the RS won't make a move should happily take the under 89.5.
  15. Always upgrade your weakest position with the best player you can find. That's your best marginal gain.
  16. It's tough to get those off-season trades. Most teams have a shot, so they won't like to give up veterans. There are usually FAs out there to meet a given need, so we have to compete against that. I think a ST injury or two might loosen that up.
  17. I'm open to betting on which of my paint drips hits the carpet first, so I'm in. Just for fun, I'm setting the under/over for 2026 at a bold 89.5, and I am taking the over. Anyone taking the other side?
  18. While acknowledging that you are more likely to be correct, $125M/5 is not onerous and is a good fit. Assuming that KC doesn't return to the IF, and that Arias replaces Story at the end of his contract, we don't really have a lot of options knocking at the infield door. I don't expect that, even four years from now, that anyone will be complaining that Bregman's $25M is blocking anyone good.
  19. What they've done in the past was to assess where they are in the pennant race at the deadline and adding to some degree based on our chances. What I'd like is to spend to the $269M and see where we are at the deadline.
  20. It's arbitration. One-year contracts are the norm.
  21. That stuff drives me crazy.. I liked the May move, even if it didn't work out. But the key move would've been Naylor. Our farm could've easily have matched the Mariner offer, and the salary and the tax on Naylor's salary would've been another $4.3-4.4M. And 1B was a match made in heaven.
  22. I'd bet we make the playoffs whether or not we sign Bregman. I wouldn't think twice about it. Bregman is the difference between backing in and being in the contention for 1st place. Having a #2 is the difference between a first-round exit, and a serious contender for the WS.
  23. I have no problem agreeing with that. Our spending, and virtually everyone else's, should be tailored to their windows. That said, will signing Bregman make one iota of a difference to this discussion?
