  1. In contrast, say, to more than half the AAV that inked Eovaldi two years ago... after just one All-Star month.
  2. I like the metaphor -- and allegory to dinosaurs like us who insist on defense first in building title teams.
  3. But doesn't 8M for 1 year set a bar of sorts for starting pitching? Ray is coming off a bad year, but is under 30, a one-time All-Star, and a better bounce-back/upside guy than someone nearly a decade older. Unless his arm is cooked...
  4. ... unless he has a tired arm from overuse, or an opponent has seen him enough times in the same series to have figured out his stuff; but aren't both these risks part of the argument for removing a starter after two turns through the order?
  5. Probably J., because I want as many MLB pitchers as possible. But I disagree with a lot of dollar projections, and can see $35M possibly yielding all of Stroman, Odorizzi, Hand or Hendriks and a cheap CFer. Plus, I think it's 50-50 Morton retires, and even less he'd want to finish in crappy weather Boston after moving down to Florida.
  6. The Dodgers were loaded this year; the Red Sox played like they were fall-down drunk. I don't view guys like Bogie and Vazquez as guys Bloom would want to replace, but as trade chips who could be replaced (or even upgraded, depending on market availability), while bringing back the best possible returns in other areas of need.
  7. https://www.radio.com/weei/sports/red-sox/why-i-thought-of-lindor-when-red-sox-brought-back-alex-cora I approve of this message.
  8. What about the qualitative data from Joe Kelly (post #96)? "... that was the only way we were winning... he got taken out and it turns into instant, ‘Oh, there is no way we lose now. They just did it for us’ type thing.” Maybe a number can't be put on positive thinking (or negative thinking), but if professional players believe it's a factor, then it just may be. Or as Steven not-the-knuckleballer Wright once said: "In school they taught us 'practice makes perfect', but then they said, 'nobody's perfect.' So I stopped practicing."
  9. I wouldn't trade Bogie. But I believe Bloom would. I hope X is a Red Sox for life, but if he is, I expect him to play the second half of his career at a different position.
  10. I'm not disagreeing on Ozuna, but Correa is a free agent after next season, so he's available and close to AC. He's also a better defensive shortstop than Bogaerts, comparable bat, and two years younger. Guaranteed he is a future option discussed by Cora. He may even be a guy who prefers playing for Cora and Boston. Of the upcoming Big Five free agent shortstops, I'd definitely rate Correa the most likely to become a Red Sox (even if Trevor Story is a better fit).
  11. This is why I think Springer and Correa will also be discussed by posters and actual employees of the Red Sox.
  12. This is why I don't necessarily believe Gammons. Cora was a splish, compared to a Bauer or Springer splash that would best serve the Sox in the standings and ratings. But if they're not going to risk losing an invaluable draft pick for such a signing, then fans better brace for a big-time trade.
  13. If the price of a decent second baseman is the same as JBJ, I'd have to think Cora would prefer his man, Jackie. But a lot of that has to do with how much Bradley is looking forward to leaving Boston -- which returns us to the which-came-first, the Mookie or the Betts question. Also, if analytics continue to drive the rebuild, and market trends, then we already know that a gifted regular second baseman like Pedroia is now just a commodity. Shifts and platoons are in style, and Cora won big with no regular there in '18, while the Sox have had musical second-sackers since Machado's take-out slide, which will be four years ago next April.
  14. Devers' focus seemed inconsistent without Cora, who was a big influence. Then again, playing for a last place team does that to many guys... meanwhile, a whole lot of good players throughout the MLB had bad years that may be attributed to different routines due to the pandemic.
  15. Cora should have a good assessment of Duran before ST. The CF prospect was assigned to compete in the Winter League in Cora's hometown of Caguas, playing for Cora's coach, Ramon Vazquez.
  16. Dyslexic, late SNL comedian?
  17. Watch out for those baby Bosox in 2025. Reserve your first round wildcard elimination umpteenth-seed showdown tickets now.
  18. Lugo was the best amateur hitter in Puerto Rico; wasn't he a star pupil at Carlos Beltran's academy... uh oh.
  19. I can agree with no promises, per say, but Cora's input will certainly be a consideration with the rebuild. I also expect his connection with available players on other teams to be a factor.
  20. Come on! The nerve that anyone could think Manfred's investigative report last winter had anything to do with politics...
  21. Darrell Johnson 6-4, Farrell 12-11, Mac 7-7, Little 6-6, Dick Williams 3-4, Kennedy 0-3
  22. Placeholders for Lugo and Yorke, both at least 6 footers... and the DP combo for the next great Red Sox team (unless they're converted to outfielders by then).
  23. The players are happy, and happy players play happier.
  24. Come on, we can do better than a football metphor. How about, should they Bauer (chuck a ball over the centerfield fence)? Or should they just Steamer (bounce a pitch to the backstop with the World Series-tying run on third)? It might be too confusing to pull a Manny (cutoff a Damon relay, bounce a comebacker to the mound and U-turn to the dugout, or leave the bat on your shoulder and take three straight down the middle from Rivera)...
  25. If you think Red Sox games were interminably long already, next year's games may last eight hours instead of the usual four. Word is out that before each potential in-game pitching change, the Chief Baseball Officer, GM and new manager will do a Zoom to discuss and vet a list of five finalists in the bullpen. The owners swear they'll have nothing to do with it and will leave it entirely up to management.
