    A couple good pitchers may not propel the Red Sox to the next World Series, but they will boost the club back to respectability -- which is absolutely imperative now. And a respectable team has to be a more appealing landing spot for respectable free agents in the future, respectively speaking.

    That's why the Betts trade was never going to be a good thing -- no matter how bad the team was going to be because "his salary will suck the budget dry" -- OMG, it would sure suck watching a homegrown fan favorite posting MVP WAR every season, a foundational star to build around. No, we'd rather just suck with a roster full of suck.

    Regarding such a concept -- in the John Henry Century -- I've always thought: that does not compute. To any fan of a big market team owned by a multi-billionaire -- saying, "Since we're not good enough, let's not get good players until we're good enough" -- is just not good enough.

    This whole month pretending to be big players in the Moto Sweepstakes has been a clever ruse by Breslow and Co. (which is really Company and Brez). Watch: after Yama signs for $400M with a New York team, all the other clubs will scramble to ink the consolation prizes... but not Boston... instead, the Red Sox will shock the world by announcing they paid off Japan to change its rules, and introduce the majors' first $500M-dollar pitcher -- Roki Sasaki!!!

    MLB.com -- the Yankees flagship website -- ran its daily ranking of "teams that need to sign Yamamoto the most"... ... of course, the Yankees were #1, because MLB so wants New York to be good again -- but don't worry; even if he goes anywhere else, the Skanks will still be predicted to win the World Series for the 89th straight offseason, since that's required typing for anyone who works for the league office. The Red Sox, who only have one sure Minion in their entire starting rotation, were listed as the 6th-most Yamamoto-needy club...

    MLB.com reporting the bidding is "about to heat up"... ... so $300 million is what, luke warm? luke skywalker? luke abrasi? Is it possible that a guy who's never thrown a big league pitch to get the largest contract for a pitcher in history? Is it possible he won't? If two or three teams are already offering $300M -- and there's six clubs that covet him -- it's going to take the winner to just blow away the field: do I hear $350M? ... and if the owner of that bid isn't Cohen, what's to stop him from just blasting into the realm of $400M?

    Different angle: is it possible Nola lost - or did not gain - at least another $50 million, had he waited until after Yamamoto signs? After all, Nola has had a lot more success in the majors than Mr. Moto Risin...

    It was Breslow who encouraged Yamamoto to request second meetings with the New Yorkers, after he assured him that the Red Sox would beat any offer. It was the least Boston could do to help YY make a final decision -- a goodwill display of the utmost respect for our future ace. I just made that whole thing up, but it may be our best hope for getting back into contention in 2024... that is, if this guy really is the goods. Most realists see the free agent consolation prizes as pieces towards stability, but -- barring trades and prospect capital -- are there any real available difference-makers out there? For regulars, no one is even as consistent all-around as Bogaerts (when he hit the market a year ago). Bellinger reduced his K-rate immensely in '23, but isn't he also the position player version of up-and-down Snell on the mound -- too risky to commit to longterm?

    If Yama breaks records, like it looks, Monty will want at least $200M. Whether that's for five, six or seven years is up to some rich owner and desperate GM... The point is, the Red Sox don't have to be that desperate; they're not that close to the World Series.

    If Yama signs with the Yankees, the Red Sox should save their money. Snell is too inconsistent and will cost both big bucks and a draft pick; there's got to be a reason the clever Dodgers are out on him. Montgomery can help any contender, but will he be worth $40M AAV to the AL East doormat? The rebuilding Red Sox should instead pivot to Imanaga, Stroman, and trade for a starting pitcher they can control into the years when they're actually good again.

    No one had to ask, because we all knew the Sox could. Usually I'm wrong about predictions, but I was never so sure five years ago when I said the Red Sox would soon spend more than they offered Mookie on a less-talented player. That may have been Raffy -- who we all love and who won another Silver Slugger, but overpressed with runners on base and was just brutal on D. At least he was a legit MLB star. But a less-proven player? Offering the richest pitcher contract in baseball history -- which some club will soon do -- to a guy who has never thrown a big league pitch? Would even Chaim make that bet?

    Didn't Dombro also bring in his own thought partner in LaRussa? At the time, it seemed like Tony would be an advisor to Cora, learning the manager business. Still waiting for Breslow... to find his thought partner. Unless The Committee forbids it.
